This is one of van der Post's earliest books written in 1952 about his post WWII journey by "aeroplane" across Africa and to Nayasaland (Malawi)to survey the highlands of Mt. Mlanje and the Nyika Plateau for the colonial British govenment.Anyone that has read Laurens van der Post knows that he is a master of description both of the land and the people he encounters. I had wanted to read this book for years. It was very highly recommended to me by a fellow Peace Corps volunteer while I was in Botswana in southern Africa. After many years I found this on Amazon and finally read it and had a very difficult time putting it down to attend to the other demands of life. It is a very good, engaging book.As you read this you will have to look beyond the colonial perspective that van der Post had regarding the British and the Malawian "natives" and see the riches of the country and it's people of that period. van der Post reflects often on the people and his recent return from his ordeal as a prisoner of war.

I used to live in East Africa and so was interested to see what it was like in 1952. Van der Post includes a lot of philosophizing in with the exploration, which I would have preferred less of. Malawi is a country that is not heard about a lot. I didn't know it had high mountains and I since went on the internet to see where he was and it is still the same. On the whole I found it very interesting and I learned quite a bit about the old British colonial system from it

Thanks to the Vine Program I recently read Paul Theroux's latest work, The Last Train to Zona Verde: My Ultimate African Safari. My review is posted; one of my criticisms was the seemingly petty way that he attacked a number of other writers, including this work's author. Theroux called van der Post a "mythomaniac," a "fantasist" and "fake mystic." Theroux specifically mentioned this work, which I had first read some 40 years ago, and I was impressed with it then. Gulp! Had I been taken in again, thinking about Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World... One Child at a Time (Young Reader's Edition) by Greg Mortenson , and Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West by Steve Ambrose, both of which I enjoyed when I first read them, and then was sadly disappointed to find out the authors fabricated portions of their works? I checked Wikipedia, and there seems to be some substance to Theroux's charge; there is even a book that chronicles his deceits: (Storyteller: The Lives of Laurens van der Post). So, I decided to re-read the book, in part to determine if I had not been critical enough the first time, as I had not in the books cited above. For me it remains a fascinating time, and a journey I much envy. Britain had emerged on the victorious side in World War II, but was still recovering. The political leadership realized that the colonial era was drawing to a close. They had already recognized Indian independence. Yet one strain of the leadership remained deeply attached to the fate of the world beyond its shores. The British "Locust Control Board" funded Wilfred Thesiger's trip across the Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia, in 1947, in part, to determine if that was the origins of the locust when they swept across India. Concern over food production, and the increasing world population led them to fund Laurens van der Post's journey to two remote highland areas of Nyasaland, (present day Malawi) which had been part of a federation with Rhodesia. (Ironically, in light of the '82 war, he mentioned that food concerns occurred due to "problems with Argentina.")He departed Heath Row (so spelt, with the space) on May 10, 1949, on an old-fashioned air journey, on a plane bound for South Africa, but with lengthy ground stops, to re-fuel, and feed the passengers, on the ground. The plane sat 24, in comfort. The plane had landing stops near Tripoli, Libya, Khartoum, in the Sudan, and then Nairobi, Kenya. He then commences on an even smaller plane to Blantyre, in Nyasaland. The first third of the book is devoted simply this air journey. He also gives a brief account of his ancestors, all of whom are of Dutch origins, who had immigrated to South Africa, thence being knows as "Afrikaners." On one of their treks in the 19th Century, to the "Free State," his grandmother, who was a small child at the time, narrowly escaped with her life, in a massacre by the natives, of the trekkers, that killed all the other members of the party, including her parents. He describes a "sleepy" Nyasaland, with no real anti-colonial movement, ruled by 2000 British whites (and that figure includes the wives!). The "sweet-spot" in the book is his description of his trek on Mt. Mlanje, in the extreme south of the country, in an area that bordered Portuguese East Africa (now, Mozambique.). It is a highland area, 2000-3000 meters, which looked, in many ways, like Scotland. The British actually had a forestry service there, and van der Post is repeated warned that they are deeply devoted to the cedar trees which grew on the mountain. Val and Dicky Vance, in their late 20's, with their young daughter, live an isolated and idyllic life high on the mountain. Their concern is that van der Post is on a mission to take their small place in "paradise" away from them. And in an unintentional way, he did: on their trek over the top of the mountain, Dicky Vance was swept away, and killed, while trying to cross a stream. Van der Post had to return with the grim news for his wife. The last third of the book was not as dramatic, and described his journey along the high Nyika plateau, in the far north of the country. In terms of the "re-evaluation," I still found the description of the journey fascinating. I was uneasy with his account of Dicky Vance's death; first of all, there were the endless "premonitions" which seemed to be constructed with hindsight. Likewise, his need to fault Dicky Vance for his death seemed to indicate that van der Post was hiding some inner guilt. And it should be noted that van der Post was a friend and an adherent of the philosophy of Carl Jung, and he weaves his outlook towards the African native from that perspective. At time, he seems to have progressive views, for example, his willingness to shake their hand, when others would not (OK... so, in a relative sense), but he also repeatedly uses the term "bearers," as indeed they were. Perhaps, that is merely "quaint", as is the use of some terms by Faulkner. Finally, he never says what the result of his two treks in the highlands was. Did he even file a report? So, with moments of unease about the veracity of certain points, I'll give it 4-stars.

This remains one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors. On the surface this book is about a true, post WWII adventure and exploration -- philosopher Sir Laurens van der Post's incredible and dramatic journey into the interior of Africa to survey certain areas for the colonial British government. However as always with van der Post's writing his meaning is deeper and is woven so beautifuly throughout the text. As the title eludes, this is a bold and grand venture into the interior of our human selves. In the Preface he sets up this venture when he refers to 'an unresolved conflict between two fundamental elements in my make-up; conscious and unconscious, male and female, masculine and feminine...On one side, under the heading "Africa", I would group unconscious, female, feminine, mother; and under "Europe" on the other: conscious, male, masculine, father'. And further in the text he states for example: 'For this unreality starts in an incomplete awareness of ourselves... out of this dark gorge... between the two halves of ourselves, out of this division between the Europe and the Africa in us, unreality rises up to overwhelm us... The human being... is strangled in his own lack of self-awareness.' And again, ''The problem is ours; it is in us, in our split and divided hearts... We hate the native in ourselves; we scorn and despise the night in which we have our being ...before we can close our split natures we must forgive ourselves. We must, we must forgive our European selves for what we have done to the Africa within us.'This is a highly-recommended prophetic book prompting much-needed reflection on our human condition; that we do indeed all suffer from this split personality and that a deeper awareness of it is critical to our future. In terms of a solution, van der Post laments in the book '...could there be... some magic somewhere, some medicine that could redeem all?' In other words can our split natures be reconciled?? Is there something out there that can reconcile these depressingly dividied 'African' and 'European' selves? Unbelievably, there is. An Australian biologist -- who himself frequently draws upon the work of Sir Laurens van der Post, including 'Venture To the Interior' -- Jeremy Griffith has produced a biological explanation of the human condition that does just that. Our human condition is logically explained in first principle terms and the outcome is truly wonderous and transforming for the entire human race. A breakthrough of monumental significance. I have been reading this anthology for years and was delighted to have an advance reader's copy from Amazon Vine this year. I routinely also read the Best American Essays and the Best American Short Stories. My personal favorite, by far, is the Best American Science and Nature Writing. Not only are the essays beautifully written and informative, they are usually deeply thoughtful. Many of them narrate a particular instance that is fascinating in itself and suggests a larger message. One example of this is Elizabeth Kolbert's essay "The Big Kill." Here, she describes the broad based efforts in New Zealand to get rid of small mammals such as rats and skoats that have been introduced and have become invasive, killing off the flora and slowly destroying the natural habitats of native birds. When you begin reading the essay you are appalled at the mass efforts to enlist even children in the trapping and killing of the little mammals. But as you read you step back, along with the author to see the bigger picture of the overall environment and you gradually shift toward understanding and endorsement of the efforts to get rid of the invasive species. But Kolbert is telling you this story because it points to a larger reference. The people of New Zealand are up against tremendous odds as the invasive species have exploded. But they have taken it on and are going after the problem with commitment, inventiveness and resources. Kolbert uses the example of New Zealand to make her point about what we should be --and are mostly not -- doing about climate change. In her words:"Even taking the long view -- the very long view -- the threat posed to New Zealand's fauna by invasive species is extraordinary. It may be unprecedented in the 80 million years that New Zealand has existed. But we live in an age of unprecedented crises. We're all aware of them, and mostly we just feel paralyzed, incapable of responding. New Zealanders aren't wringing their hands, nor are they telling themselves consolatory tales about the birth of novel ecosystems.' They're dividing their neighborhoods into grids and building better possum traps . . . ."In this review I have focused on just this one essay as it provides an example of the kind of excellence throughout the anthology. The essays are quite varied in topic and voice, and they are not all as good as this one, but as a whole the collection is really wonderful, thought provoking, and a joy to read.

Another great addition to the Best American Science & Nature series. I noticed that some other reviewers have been commenting on how the selections were more about people and society than hard science. But that's what makes science writing meaningful and purposeful; what is the point of science if not for the advancement of humanity and improving our quality of life? Finding a more efficient way to produce electricity--cool! Why do we care? Because it's helping the poor of India live better lives. Mapping out a totally undiscovered cave system--beyond awesome! But what makes this worth reading? The human struggle, the sweat, tears, and sacrificed sleep it took to accomplish this. If you want cold, hard science, this is not the book for you. Go read an academic journal instead.

Fascinating articles on science and nature, including subjects such as human health and how it is affected by light, and how a focus on genetics has made plant cultivation and development a scientific craft that could be compared to the process of software development. I also learned much more about the patent process for plants and other scientific discoveries. This book got me through a whole day of sitting and waiting while I was on jury duty.

The collection is light on hard science and long on human interest stories. The writing itself is uniformly good, but when I consider the state of science literacy in American society, I would have hoped for more content. That being said, the extensive reading list of other 2014 science articles is a valuable resource.

I really enjoyed reading this collections due to its wide range of excellent articles. As a science teacher I enjoy writing that enlightens and inspires and this collection certainly does both of those well. I will consider getting each yearly edition to have timely articles for my students and myself to read, discuss, and digest.

A wide variety of science/nature topics and viewpoints are represented. I like the fact that these are collected from many different sources, some I usually wouldn't read or even know about. If a particular article doesn't interest you, the next one surely will. This collection comes out each year with a different person selecting the articles and doesn't disappoint.

This outstanding collection of writing should be shared widely. Every essay has messages that tell about important science that should be understood by the public. I hope many high school teachers of virtually any subject will find from this collection assignment that will both challenge and inspire their students.

This is a disappointing collection. Several essays are simply uninteresting, and hard to objectively classify as 'the best' of 2015. Two short pieces by one Jourdan Imani Keith, and and essay about the study of 'curiosity' by Kim Todd fall in this category. An article by Meera Subramanian on New York City's efforts at coping with rising sea levels and 'hurricane Sandy' type events is well-written, but somewhat abstruse. Hard to know what the editor, Rebecca Skloot, was thinking when she picked these pieces for inclusion in this volume.A couple of the essays are quite good. The most riveting, 'Aftershocks,' describes in fascinating detail the conviction, for involuntary manslaughter, of a half dozen Italian seismologists for failing to warn the public about an earthquake that struck a remote area of Italy late in the last decade.

I read this series every year, found this one lacking. In previous years, some of the contributions have been most thought provoking, for me anyway this was not the case for the 2015 collection. Maybe 2015 was a year with less choice for the executive editor....

I was one of the test subjects for this book and I can fully testify that this is the REAL DEAL. I dropped 34 pounds in the 5 month research phase but what is far more important is that I learned so much about good food and bad food. There is a lot of bad food out there, many we are unaware of. The Ludwigs teach you the differences and how to cook the meals that change your body for the better and for the long term. The other wonderful aspect of their plan is that the battle for a healthy weight is more than just the food aspect. They also teach you about proper sleep and exercise. I fell in love with the after dinner "passeggiatas" with my daughter. That is Italian for "walk".You will feel a bit overwhelmed in the beginning with the drastic transition from the old stock of food in your home to the new way of shopping, (I have to say that the clean out prep phase was fun and refreshing). Take the time to plan it out and shop on a day when you have a good amount of time. The first shopping trip is like the load-in trip. After that, it gets easier. The benefit of having meals ready on the fly are worth the time it will take to shop, prep and cook. After a short period of time, you get a lot faster. The bottom line is this, it gives you a true, long term path to overall great health. Here's to your health.

I've been on the plan for five months. I'm a middle aged female, probably within a year or two of menopause. This should be the hardest time in my life so far to lose weight - and I in fact was gaining rapidly in the five years before starting the plan - my doctors were alarmed. Yet I have lost 30 pounds and five inches off my waist since starting the plan five months ago. I still have more I need to lose, but this is a great start. And I really haven't done the plan exactly right - I haven't exercised or done relaxation techniques. I know those are important, but my point is ... the plan is working so well for me that it succeeds even in spite of me.I wasn't sure if this would even work, but it has succeeded beyond my expectations. And I eat until I'm full. I'm not being deprived - I'm eating delicious foods.AND my knees don't hurt anymore. They stopped hurting in a week after starting the plan. My mood is more stable. My focus is so much sharper. My blood sugar is stable instead of crazy, crave-y. My depression has improved. My acid reflux is now rare. I didn't know any of that would happen. I control food, rather than food controlling me; I don't spend time longing for more food, or different food; frankly, I don't think about food much at all, unless it's time to eat a meal, and my body lets me know when that is, and I honor its wishes.I'm not saying this is the best thing to do, but it's my story - I abandoned the meal plan in the book after about three days. It was too time consuming, and my partner in crime was about to mutiny. The recipes are indeed very good, but I can't spend that much time cooking. I instead mostly eat simple meals - and there are tools to do that with simple building blocks like eggs/chicken/smoked turkey/salmon/other meats, cubes of cheese/guac/nuts/high fat dressings, fruit/brown rice/sweet potato/beans/occasional chocolate. You can go as simple or as fancy as you want. We do cook on weekends, making and freezing 10 servings of recipes we like from the book and recipes from elsewhere that comply with the plan, and that makes it easier. But we don't cook much during the week. I needed to point that out for folks who fear they don't have the time to do the fancy recipes in the book. They're good, but you CAN succeed without them. There's a Facebook support group for people following the book. It's been a good resource for me, a supportive community of like-minded folks helping each other along.Oh - one last thing - yes, this approach is counter to mainstream conventional wisdom. I had blood drawn before I started, and drawn again three months in. My physician is in support of what I'm doing and says my labs look great. I'll go back and re-draw six months after the three-month draw. This is to be sure I'm not damaging my health in some way, although it's hard to imagine having all these health benefits that I can feel, and yet damaging my health. But I'll keep an eye on it.I plan to eat this way for the rest of my days.10/29/16: Edited to add - I've lost 40 pounds now, and still going strong. I still have more weight to lose. People who haven't seen me in a while look me up and down and say, Wow, you look great - what did you do???5/12/17: Down 55 pounds now!

I was an early adopter of Dr. Ludwig’s, “Always Hungry?” plan.Lengthy review and my personal tips for success. After a snow boarding accident in 2005, I gained a significant amount of weight, ballooned to 255+ lbs. Following this plan I was able to shed right at 100 lbs in 12 months and have maintained that loss since (nearly 12 months now).Yes, In the beginning cooking and prep work for meals took longer. Now, however, it’s second nature and cooking takes less time than before I started “Always Hungry?”Other benefits, inflammation due to my injury significantly reduced, sugar cravings are non-existent, and at 46 years old I’m at 14% body fat.I’ve been able to resume a fully active life. There is a supportive Facebook group for the “Always Hungry?” book as well.Everyone will have different results, based on a number of factors. Underlying health issues, compliance and adherence to the outlined protocol and so forth. Here is the text of a post I made to the related Facebook group...Always Hungry? - My 21 tips and insights for success, starting out and maintaining. Some of these are repeating what I found essentially important in the book and others are my personal observations. We have a lot of new members joining the AH lifestyle, feels like a movement, a food revolution.I've been working on and editing these in response to questions I get. Hope they make sense are are helpful for those starting out, maintaining or rebooting.1- Read the book, then read it again.2- Keep the book handy as a reference or guide book, nearly 20 months in and I still go back to it when I'm questioning something.3- Get "buy-in" from members of your household. I'm not exactly sure how successful I would have been without that. This house is an AH zone. Not saying it can't be done without that, just my personal opinion and experience.4- Breath, it's a lot of information to consume in the beginning. It can be done, I promise you.5- Plan, set yourself up for success by looking at your calendar. I realize this is not always possible and we all live busy hectic lives. Michael travels a lot for work, we planned our initial 2 weeks of Phase 1 around his schedule and when he would be home for a couple of weeks.6- The book talks about this but it was essential for our success. Three days before our start we cleaned EVERYTHING that was non-complaint from the cupboards save for the food we needed for those few days. Two days out, armed with our shopping list we restocked the house. One day out we did our week one prep work.7- Day one, measure yourself and weigh yourself. Use the provided trackers as you progress through the first several weeks / months. I still use my tracker every week to log my weight and waist. I keep a handy 3 ring binder in the pantry right next to my copy of AH. The daily component of the tracker really helped me learn what it meant to "listen to my body".8- Don't look at this as if it were a diet, working and sticking with the plan has been life changing for me. Embrace all aspects of the lifestyle.9- Again, from the book, but so important..."be gentle with yourself". There are no cheats only decisions, remember, this is not a diet.10- Play with food, the choices and combinations are truly endless. We comment all the time with how seldom we repeat meals. We always loved to cook, this has made us much better, more creative cooks.11- Don't go in search of "compliant" packaged things that remind you of things you used to eat. Embrace change.12- Learn to read labels. Not the "nutritional label" but the Ingredient List, it's usually in tiny print. In my personal opinion and experience, the list is printed so small because you have never heard of much less can you pronounce some of the ingredients. (Those with advanced chemistry degrees and a good Latin background may disagree).13- Try as hard as you can and follow the meal plans as outlined during the first four weeks. (I realize those with particular food sensitivities, health concerns, lifestyle choices may need to deviate). This was an essential element for me. Got me to open my mind and try a couple of things I would not have. Also, it was a total "brain retrain". It showed me what a truly balanced meal looks like.14- Pay particular attention to portion sizes as outlined in the book. This is of great importance to readers in The United States. We have been assaulted for years with "super-sized", "value meals", "unlimited"...you get my point.15- Eat mindfully, eat slower, enjoy the fruits of your labor. This will really help with learning to eat until 80% full. Also, eat around the plate.16- You found this Facebook group, use the search function...many answers to your questions will be found there. If you can't find the answer or still have questions, ask away! This is a great group with a ton of smart and supportive members.17- Appreciate the NSV's!18- Find your "joyful" movement. It may be one thing, it may be several things. It may be something you used to do and enjoyed but stopped for whatever reason.19- Everyday on the plan gets easier, eventually it just becomes who you are, only changed. Believe it or not, even cooking takes less time than it did before AH.20- Don't be intimidated with asking questions at restaurants and or asking for modifications. Any good restaurant that wants your business will do their best to accommodate you. If not, make a mental note so as not to return.21- Finally and most importantly...Don't compare yourself or your progress to anyone else. Everybody and every body are different.

Chuck Collins is a hero. He has put his money where his mouth is: he rejected extreme inherited wealth in favor of working for income, wealth, and tax fairness for all citizens. In this book he discusses the myriad ways that the wealthy, White males, and all US citizens were born with incredible advantages that others don't have -- and that makes his success as a member of the 1% (and also White and male) has made any home run he might achieve not that difficult to predict -- after all, he was born on third base!He points out the various ways that police practices, sentences given by judges, hostility to efforts to redress racial bias by legislators, and numerous laws (especially immigration laws and punitive prison sentences for drug possession) have all created a permanent underclass that cannot dig out since they are denied decent education, mentoring, easy access to voting, and opportunities fo employment and internships. He suggests many ideas for widening opportunities,

This is a fantastic book! My aunt and uncle gave it to me for a birthday present. So glad they did! In a world where the rich game the system further and further to their benefit, using money, power, influence and attorneys to change the rules of the system, it's nice to see a compassionate man born on the silver-spoon side of the tracks, with the perspective to see ways both the 99%, AND, those in the 1% with a heart, can make this inequity stop, and perhaps even change direction one day.

VERY interesting "read" and should be read by everyone. I'd like to know what ideas or plans of action have come about convincing 1%ers into giving up their perceived power. How does one even start the conversation about inequality without making those more fortunate feel guilty?

Inspiring .... awesome and yet sometimes ugly truths emerge about humanity. There are some One Percenter's who are not materialistic or greedy.A good read!

I think the title, as well as the main premise of the book initially put me off, but after hearing what Collins has to say (and having the privilege of hearing him speak last weekend) I think I am on board with this message. Coming from the perspective of a man born into wealth who has tried to convert that wealth into social good and fight for equality, Collins argues that we can make things work by reforming our current democratic and capitalist systems, but only in a peaceful way if we engage the wealthy and work across class divisions. Reading about the exploits and excesses of the wealthy admittedly does make it difficult to imagine there is anything worthwhile to be gained from working with them, but the book does a good job of telling stories of times when this kind of collaboration has resulted in change for the better. This is also unfortunately one of the weaknesses of this book as the latter half drags a bit describing examples one after another. I would recommend picking this book up and reading the first half, then flipping through the rest to see if you find any of the particular causes engaging. Massive changes to our distribution of wealth are coming inevitably, Collins argues, but these changes can be a lot quicker and less violent if rich and poor can come to the table together for reform and redistribution of wealth.

A convincing and enlightening critique of the problem of wealth inequality and how to create positive change. The author has experienced what he so effectively discusses.

I was turned onto thus book after listening to an interview with the author and his discussion about the subject matter sounded very interesting. I am glad I read this book, it has helped to change my views on income inequality.

Absolutely heartfelt and chock full of hope.

This is a wonderful, profound and inspiring book. It touched me to the very core of my being. In the midst of the daily gruel of chaos & cruelty served up by the World's news organizations, we are offered a chalice of Divine Love a la the concept of Spiritual Transfiguration. This book is Act 5 of this saga; thus, it behooves the reader to first partake of vols.1-4 of the Heart Series. The end game is nothing less than joining Christ in "Becoming One with The Father".

I was a very early adopter of Queen. I had the benefit of an avant-garde FM station in Philly, WMMR, that was always a step ahead of actual commercial releases. Listening to DJ Carol Miller's evening show I heard cuts from Queen's first album prior to its commercial release. As soon as I heard those iconic guitars I was hooked! I had never heard guitars with that unique timbre before. It, along with Freddie's unique vocals, created totally unique sounds from a bunch of guys who knew how to rock. Bought "Queen" the day it was released and couldn't get enough of it, until the release of Queen II. The second album told a story and Freddie's writing wove the songs together into a tapestry of good vs. evil. I just, some 40+ years later, pulled out my original LP and gave it a spin. The songs were every bit as wonderful as I remembered but the sound quality was not up to the quality of the music. Virtually no bass, ragged treble and compressed dynamics. What to do? Search on Amazon for a remastering, of course. And there it was... a 2011 remaster job by none other than Bob Frickin' Ludwig. Those of you who are into the audio scene will recognize Ludwig as a mastering legend. And, yes he did his magic on this CD. It is UNBELIEVABLE! Yes there is bass, very appropriately balanced. The ragged treble is gone and the stereo effects of the original have been optimized. Dynamics! Yes they are here too. This remastering has brought this wonderful music back to life with clarity and drive. Kudos to Mr. Ludwig. It must be satisfying to do what he has done with this classic album and restored the beauty and bit of the original album as the guys played it.Buy this CD. I feel guilty that I paid so little for it.

It is a great album but I received one that was faulty. They gave me a replacement that had the same problem. So, be careful when choosing to buy this album. I think a whole bunch of them weren't "pressed" right. The music is unbelievably great, as I have it on CD already. I just happen to be nostalgic when it comes to certain records, such as this.

UPDATE: Received replacement. The hole in the replacement is also too small. This indicates a manufacturing error on a larger scale. I was able to push it onto the rod to fit--but buyer beware. You can see how wonky it sits on my record player.Original review: The hole on this record was TOO SMALL to fit onto my record player. Ordered a replacement, if it also doesn't fit then it is likely a larger scale manufacturing issue and I will update this review.

Queen II saw the band finding their theatrical vision that would grow into fruition on A Night at the Opera. Simply put, the great moments were here and this is probably their heaviest album but the great songs weren't quite here yet. Due to what the band would become, Queen II is an intriguing listen especially if you didn't discover their early albums until later like I did. And you have to respect their ambition. This is certainly stronger than all of the '80s albums sans The Game and in the ballpark of News of the World. "Seven Seas of Rhye" is the most well known song here and for good reason. It is the most developed song and along with the very good "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" and the short ditty "Nevemore" really shows what would come. Otherwise, you have moments of absolute brilliance in the heavy as sin "Ogre Battle" and the epics "Father to Son" and "The March of the Black Queen". "The Loser In the End" is very good and is one of the better Roger Taylor tracks and the emotional "Funny How Love Is" is strong as well.. "Some Day One Day" also really plays like a template to the excellent Brian May tracks that would emerge later in "'39" and "Long Away". And for these reasons you can see why this is the favorite of long time fans which I totally respect. Queen II is very interesting and is a grower but if you're a newcomer you may want to start with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, or Sheer Heart Attack before you get to this one.

It's been said by many reviewers here, but I'll say it again: Queen 2 is the band's best record. I love or really like all of Queen's records but this one is just amazing. I think that other Queen records seem to always have that one song (or more than one if we're talking Hot Space...) that just didn't speak to me; which I attribute to the their adventurous musical nature and unique sound - which is a good thing. However, on Queen 2 every song is just perfect.

Am I the only one who loves "Funny How Love Is"? Try singing along with it. Anyway, what can I say about this masterwork. This album has a certain something about it, just like the follow-up release, and the one after that. Like "Led Zeppelin IV," this mish-mash of styles just works. Honestly, how many other bands can (a) sing this well, (b) write such great songs, (c) play their instruments so well? How many? Listen to this record, you unbelievers. You lords and lady creatures. Then wonder why you ever bought an ELP record.

I purchased this Deluxe Version hoping the remix would brighten up the sound, as all the generations of CD I've owned of this album seem to have lost something as compared to the LP versions that I owned in the 70s (especially Procession). Well, I don't hear too much of a difference on side White compared to the previous generations of the CD, but side Black definitely sounds brighter, namely, the huge intro to March of the Black Queen, which for my ears is what most makes this album worth owning. So I'm pleased. The additional songs are pretty cool. I won't describe them but I'll suggest they're worth owning, moreso that the extras on the Hollywood Records release. Actually, If they'd included an instrumental mix of Millionaire Waltz on A Day at the Races, I'd have purchased that one as well.
