The Finest Rooms in America, by Thomas Jayne

Review

“A definitive compendium of decorating that's begging to live on your bookshelf. Mr. Jayne, mega decorator himself and disciple of interiors legend Albert Hadley, has a refreshingly democratic eye (for a decorator) presenting an array of finery from the tippy top of society’s homes—tastefully jammed with important European furniture or, conversely, lean and tailored with collectible modern. It is a treat to have all of this catalogued in one swell tome.”—The Wall Street Journal Thomas Jayne, the New York decorator, has always brought both a scholarly knowledge of design history and a quirky sense of the modern to his work, creating rooms that bridge the old and the new. And even though there is none of Jayne’s own work in his new book, The Finest Rooms in America (The Monacelli Press), his sensibility is evident in his choice of what the book’s subtitle calls “fifty influential interiors from the 18th century to the present.” —TheNewYorkTimes.com “..from Thomas Jefferson’s tearoom to Albert Hadley’s sitting room, 50 of America’s most inspiring spaces.”  —House Beautiful “A fascinating tour of the country’s most influential extant spaces, by an always engaging, sharp-eyed guide.” —Veranda “Titling a book The Finest Rooms in America is an ambitious proclamation, but Thomas Jayne delivers a thorough and satisfying portrait of some of the most striking American interiors in this new book.” —AOL.com (Shelterpop)  “Two hundred years of fine American interior design are packed into this elegant new book.” —Art of the Times (Florida)

This book is fantastic. It has great photos and all of the photo descriptions are on the same page as what is shown. You don't have to keep flipping back and forth between text and the pictures of the elegant rooms. I like the way the author has showcased the historic homes, especially Monticello. It was considered genius in its day, and is still so considered. My design sense leans toward traditional/eclectic, with a twist of contemporary art. So I am happy that he included many rooms that are traditionally designed and ones that include family photos and the owners' personal possessions. I truly hope the author has other books "in the works," and I would like to see more photos of his own design work.

Great transaction,iBook as described, fast shipping, highly recommended

The book is very nice and the rooms chosen are beautiful. The photography is beautiful. However this is one expert opinion. For example I find it hard to believe that not one room in the White House would be chosen by the author. That being said I wonder how many other rooms could be considered the "Finest". Perhaps a team of several designers, architects and decorators could have collaborated as coauthors to compile a fairer selection. Some rooms depicted would likely still make the grade but there would be others considered finer than those illustrated.

Quite disappointing. Considering how many beautiful homes there are in America this is quite a miserable choice.

"... just as in my parents' house, rooms that are small and not expensive can also be among the finest." The author's words are both democratic and provocative. The reader will become involved with this book firstly curious to see which rooms are chosen then wondering how and why they were chosen and ultimately understanding what makes a room fine, wonderful, etc. Do we agree with the author or disagree with his choices? 50 is just a number. The real take away will be your own enriched ideas for quality, proportions, style, design, livability. The book is the author's invitation to go on this intellectual journey. His creative process is contagious. Of course, it can be easier to look back historically and all agree on what has staying power and remains pleasing to most but, challenging to assign that same title to rooms made in our lifetime. The 50 rooms reveal the author's bold goal realized and invite us to ponder number 51, 52, etc, as well as our own rooms. "The Finest..." provides beautiful food for thought.Mindy Papp Durham

This book is filled with wonderful illustrations and very descriptive text. It spans many years and a variety of styles. It is fun to just look at, but also very helpful for design projects.

Wonderful book filled with excellent photographs and very good text. The book shows houses of all sorts, each with their own particular aesthetic merits!

Lavishly illustrated and beautifully written, this is for the home conoisseur who either has the spend to have a home like this, or is looking at top of the range to improve what they have on a more modest budget.

Angel is an engaging story of a young Filipina immigrating in the wake of her father's death. The dialect lacks any key or glossary which some readers are likely to find frustrating. But the tale nonetheless sweeps up the reader. There are several scenes that especially draw strong emotional responses from the reader and flaunt Galang's ability to compose. The tale reads swiftly and ends with little resolution of the plot. Overall, Angel is a masterful tale of a girl becoming a young woman in a world she doesn't understand and well-deserving of a read. Or two.

An interesting look into a place and people I’m not familiar with, but the story dragged.

Within just a few pages I suspected that this was a book that would challenge me and make me work – make me think. Prior to reading this book I had very little knowledge about the history of the Philippines and the novel covers a lot of historical territory. The bigger issue initially though was language. The majority of the text is in English, but Galang’s characters code switch between English and Tagalog and there are no italics to be found. Yes, the meaning was often clear through context, but it was challenging to read with that bit of uncertainty. Looking to the back of the book, I found that there was no glossary, but there was a rather thorough explanation for that choice “In Context (Or, Why There is No Glossary)”[...]-... I’ve read articles about authors using or not using italics and including or omitting glossaries and she makes a very strong case for writing in this style. The reader who doesn’t know Tagalog may choose to use the Internet and find the definitions or just fall into the story and go with the flow. I really wanted to know what all of the words meant, but a conversation between Angel and her father convinced me to skip the definitions. He was explaining about how to listen to the blues, “The trick, Angel, is not to think. Just feel it.”There is plenty to feel in this story. Angel and her family are dealing with the unexpected loss of her father. In the aftermath, her mother pulls away from the family and adds one more loss. The book moves on to other issues though as Angel becomes increasingly involved with politics. She protests the corruption in the government in an effort to overturn the presidency. This section of the book was a little harder for me to follow. I wasn’t always certain what exactly was being protested and why, but even so, Galang’s story pulled me along. Angel, her sister Lila and her grandmother also visit elderly comfort women. These are women who were taken by Japanese soldiers during WWII and were used as sex slaves. The amazing strength of the women in this book and the stories of the comfort women blazed through any confusion I may have had on my first read through. The beginning of the story centers on Angel’s immediate family and those closest to her. The second portion expands out into the larger community and the final section pulls back in again to a more intimate view of Angel’s inner conflicts. It’s in the final portion that the book felt the most like a young adult novel. In spite of the teen main character, it felt more like an adult novel in the beginning. I still can’t place my finger on why that was true for me, but maybe it was that there was so much that was unfamiliar in that part of the book. Also, when Angel was in the Philippines, she was attending a private Catholic school for girls and that was only part-time. Most of her time was taken up with work, family duties, and politics. She was dealing with adult situations as she stood in for her absent mother. The final section takes place in Chicago with her mother and around high school and her new friends. There was revolution in her political acts in the Philippines, but there almost seems to be more revolution here as she settles into her new situation in the U.S. and certainly in her interactions with her mother. This is a story of self-discovery, family, hope and healing. There is a lot of pain and heartbreak within these pages, but there is also strength and beauty. Galang’s writing is lyrical and rich – something to savor.Recommendation: Angel de la Luna and the 5th Glorious Mystery was on the 2014 Amelia Bloomer Project List and I am not surprised. This is a book not to be missed. Get it soon. It may require a little extra effort for a reader without the background knowledge or Tagalog language skills, but any effort is totally worth it. Angel and the women in her life will be with me for a long time to come.Review originally posted at [...]/review...

Amazing story. Difficult subject matter, but then war is terrible. I was not aware of the level of suffering the Philippines experienced during the war and the long lasting political effects.

I am only in the third chapter, but I found myself sobbing last night out of joy, relief, sorrow and simply being moved by Evelina's words and storytelling. I felt I was mourning with the family in the book, mourning my young self and how I always felt like I was stupid and a slow reader compared to American children. Being an immigrant, writing and reading has been a challenge for me though I consider myself a writer and artist now. This book in just a few chapters already captures the memory and understanding I lost after leaving the Philippines, it connects me to a motherland I can't currently return to while undocumented, it perfectly captures the religious and folklore practices and beliefs in our culture and the use of Tagalog are all woven carefully and thoughtfully in a way that moves the reader, especially if they are Filipin@ and speak Tagalog. I feel extremely nostalgic for a home I don't even remember, but am living vicariously through Evelina's writing.

The year is 2000. Fourteen-year-old Angel de la Luna loves her family. She tells the story of how she looks forward to the day when they have enough money to leave Manila and go to America in search of a better life. Unfortunately, Papang, Angel's father, has been missing for two weeks. In their search for him, Angel and her family discover that he is dead. The happiness Angel once had is replaced by anger towards God. Because of depression, Inay, her mother, feels powerless to be the source of strength and comfort Angel so desperately needs during this difficult transition in her life. This only fuels Angel's anger, especially since she thinks that Inay doesn’t love her. As a result, she begins to distance herself from her mother. To make matters worse, Angel is furious when Inay suddenly decides that it is time to leave for America, expecting Angel to come with her. “Remember the dream?” Inay says. Angel replies with, “But Papang is gone. How can we live the dream? So instead of heading out to Chicago with Inay, Angel adamantly decides to stay back with her grandmother and little sister in the only home that she knows, Manila. The plot, up to this point, is not as cut and dry as it appears, and it is not even near the middle of the book since there, indeed, is more to come! Galang masterfully weaves Filipino history -- from World War II (WWII) to the People Power Revolutions -- with the rising tension between Angel and Inay. And of course, this all comes at one of the most inconvenient times in Angel’s life: puberty. Fortunately over the next two years, Mother Mary, of St. Magdalena's school where Angel and her little sister attend, opens Angel's eyes to her country's politically unstable history by introducing her to new words, “words I am going to have to look up -- feudalism, proletarian internationalism, imperialism, bourgeois populism,” and pertinent people, such as the aged Comfort Women, as well as farmers and other workers who are imprisoned for protesting against the Philippine government. Obviously, Mother Mary, who is no stranger to the horrors of WWII, is also an avid protester against injustice. Angel's eye-opening knowledge eventually leads her to protest in the People Power Revolution to overthrow President Estrada in 2001. Though her involvement with the Revolution provides meaning and purpose in her life for the first time in the year since Papang's death, it is short lived when she receives word from Inay that provisions have been made for her to move to Chicago.Galang’s meticulous portrayal of Angel’s immigrant experience in America is nothing but poignant. Now educated in the truth about how the American government exploited her native country, Angel’s view of "the country of her parent’s dreams," is tainted. In addition to entering foreign territory, Angel feels as if she's been placed into a foreign family: Inay has since remarried and now has a toddler. It doesn’t help that there is a language barrier at school, since the students’ spoken English flows much faster than what Angel had been taught in Manila. Between unresolved conflict with Inay and trying to fit in at school, Angel keeps to herself until she hears the words of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech during Black History month. His words not only encourage Angel to speak up about injustice, but also help her realize that she has the skills to start a protest in her new school. This, of course, gets her in trouble at school, which only compounds her conflict at home. Desperately seeking answers to her plethora of questions about Inay, Angel begins corresponding with her grandmother, the only person who she feels understands her. Indeed, her grandmother has answers and solutions; however, it is up to Angel to seek them out.Angel de la Luna and the 5th Glorious Mystery is not just a fictional story about a Filipino girl's search for identity. Angel, in many respects, reflects the humanity in all of us. Interspersed with strong language and adult themes, I consider this a heavy read since it is filled with the hard realities of life and deeply profound thoughts, which I recommend for mature young adult readers on up and, definitely, not for the faint of heart. Engaging and visceral, yet compassionate and heartwarming, these are but a few choice words to describe Galang's third in a collection of fabulous books focused on Filipina American issues.Originally posted on Teenreads.comAnita Lock, Book Reviewer

Software Construction and Data Structures with Ada 95 (2nd Edition)

From the Inside Flap

This text is the first in its field to use Ada 95 throughout as the language of instruction. It is intended for use in a second orthird course at the undergraduate level; it is also suitable forself-study. I assume a basic knowledge of Ada--equivalent to the first eight chapters of Feldman/Koffman, Ada 95: Problem Solving and Program Design, Second Edition, Addison-Wesley, 1996. I also present a summary of the Ada type system in Chapter 1, and a synopsis of other features, oriented to readers with Pascal experience, in Appendix I. Because many readers may have experience with Ada 83but not with Ada 95, I point out new features whereverappropriate.Basic PrinciplesAs the title indicates, this book is about software constructionand data structures. It presents most of the classical datastructures, together with many algorithms, in a framework basedon software construction using the encapsulation principle.Attention is paid to "object thinking" through heavy emphasis onthe state and behavior of objects, on the use of private typesto achieve encapsulation and tight control over operations, andon the use of generic templates to achieve flexibility andreusability.Performance prediction ("big O" notation) is introduced early inChapter 3 and pervades the remaining chapters; the notion oftrade-offs--for example, time vs. space and speed vs.abstraction--is emphasized throughout. The presentation of "bigO" is correct but rather informal, avoiding heavy mathematicalnotation that might intimidate some readers.Inheritance and dynamic dispatching are introduced in the middleof the book. However, these important techniques are kept underrather tight control, because over-use of inheritance is nowseen by industry as potentially creating large and unmanageablehierarchies of classes. Indeed, the growing popularity of theStandard Template Library in the C++ community indicates thatgeneric templates are at least as important as inheritancestructures in building understandable and maintainable software. We have endeavored to achieve a balanced presentation, with apreference for generics but due regard for the role ofinheritance.Packages and application programs--about 200 in all--are presentedin complete and compilable form; we have an aversion to programfragments. However, not all programs are fully functional.Sometimes only a package interface is given, so the studentcan write the implementation as an exercise.Sometimes the implementation is provided, but some or allof the operations are "stubbed out" so as to be compilable butnonfunctional. The intention is to direct the student to fill inthe code for the stubs.General OrganizationEach chapter introduces some data structures concepts, a fewADTs, and one or more applications thereof, all in the contextof an integrated approach to Ada 95.The first chapter is a general introduction to abstraction, witha brief survey of the Ada type system and how it is described inthe Ada standard. Also presented are a few basic Ada 95 topics, describing the changes to the names of standard packages, generalized declaration order, and removal of the write-onlyrestriction on OUT parameters. The second chapter introduces five simple but very useful ADTs:Rational numbers;Currency (dollars and cents);Calendar dates;Simple video-screen control using ANSI escape sequences;Simple window management.Recurring use is made of these in later chapters.Chapter 3 discusses recursion and "big O," with emphasis oninformal estimation of the performance of an algorithm. "Big O"comparison is done using a keyed-table example, with the tableimplemented as an unordered array, and then as an ordered one. This example lays the groundwork for the recurring generickeyed-table introduced in Chapter 5 and reimplemented in laterchapters as appropriate data structures (linked lists, binarysearch trees, hash tables) are brought into play.A discussion of the relationship between performance predictionand performance measurement is given in Section 3.6, along witha package for measuring elapsed CPU time and some suggestionsfor implementing it on timeshared computers.Ada's standard time services provide only time-of-day, which isfine for personal computers but useless for measuring CPU timeon a shared system. Therefore one must resort to usingoperating-system services. The example in this section suggestshow to do this and some code is given in an appendix forimplementing it under Unix.Chapter 4 introduces multidimensional and unconstrained arrays, with examples from vectors and matrices, as well a generaldiscussion of storage mappings for multidimensional arrays.Chapter 5 introduces generics, including a generic sort and ageneric binary search, and generic ADTs for bit-mapped sets, vectors, and keyed tables.Chapter 6 introduces variant records, with examples taken frompersonnel records, geometric shapes, variable-length strings, and metric (dimensioned) quantities. Also introduced here areAda 95 tagged types, with a revision of the personnel example toshow type extension as a much more dynamic kind of variantrecord.Chapter 7 introduces queues and stacks, with differentimplementations, all as generic ADTs, of course. Stacks are usedto implement several simple expression-to-RPN translators;queues are applied in a discrete simulation of a supermarket.Chapters 8 and 9 present dynamic linear linked structures. Thefirst chapter introduces the basics, the second presents someinteresting generic applications--including a reimplementation ofthe keyed table--as well as introducing Ada 95 unbounded strings, general access types and heterogeneous lists.Chapter 10 introduces directed graphs, with an application tostate graphs.Chapter 11 presents the basics of binary trees, using expressiontrees and binary search trees as the main examples. The chapterconcludes with an extended example of a cross-referencer,including an example of Ada 95 subprogram pointers to implementfinite state machines and other table-driven programming.Chapter 12 presents some "advanced" examples of trees: threadedbinary trees, heaps, AVL trees, and general (non-binary) trees. The heap is presented as a data structure in its own right, which operations provided in a generic package. An example isgiven of using this heap package to implement priority queues;the same generic heap package is reused in Chapter 14 toimplement heap sort.Chapter 13 gives a brief introduction to hash tables; Chapter 14presents a collection of sorting algorithms, classified by their"big O."Finally, Chapter 15 gives a brief introduction to concurrentprogramming; Ada task types and protected types are presentedthrough a series of small examples, followed by two majorapplications: a bank simulation and the famous DiningPhilosophers.AcknowledgementsThe programs in this book have been tested with the GNATcompiler runnning on a Sun Sparc server under Solaris; weacknowledge the School of Engineering and Applied ScienceComputing Facilty (SEASCF) at The George Washington Universityfor providing the computer resources. Ada is a very underrated language, it has great features which make it better suited for many applications than C++ or Java or any of the modern fads, that's why I started to learn it. This book is obviously covering an older version but it is a good entry level book (together with the other one from the same author which it partly overlaps with). It doesnt focus that much on design level problems like packages and Object Orientation but rather sticks to the control and data structures, but on this level it does a good job. It's actually easier to digest for the newbie than the big reference book by Barnes ( which I also have) and its an easier read because about 40% of the pages are sample codes. The samples are available online if you search a bit, from the university where the author worked. I even contacted him via email and got an answer with the location of the samples, very cool.

Great

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly

In this tantalizing SF thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a soul called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie's brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda's whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie. 10-city author tour. While I didn't particularly care for her other series (the one that features a certain sparkly vampire), Stephenie Meyer certainly surprised me with The Host. Considering I'm not a big fan of books about aliens, the fact that I actually liked this one is a big deal! The story was cleverly told, weaving multiple plot lines together seamlessly. But, best of all, Meyer presented me with new characters - particularly Wanderer, Ian and Jamie - to care about and be invested in.Wanderer, or Wanda, as she's known in the novel, is my favorite of the characters. It's not just because I like her name, or how it symbolizes the totality of who she is (and the kind of person I'd like to be when it comes to travel). It's because I adored her spirit. In spite of being a soul, part of an alien race that takes over various planets through their insertion into the planet's inhabitants, Wanda is kind, considerate, generous and intelligent. The sincerity of her choices was appealing, and easy to like, so it's not surprising that I grew really attached to her.Ian and Jamie would tie for my second favorite character in this novel, as they're both important parts of Wanda's story. Jamie is the little brother of Melanie, Wanderer's "host". Through Melanie's memories and her own interactions with him, Wanda grows to love him and it's really sweet to see how he responds so honestly and sincerely to her. He was always able to distinguish between the two - Melanie and Wanda - which was certainly great. Ian also ended up having the same ability, even though initially he was against Wanda's presence in their little band of humans. Witnessing his transformation and watching his regard for Wanda really grow as the story progressed made it easy to like him as much as Wanderer did.Honestly, the book's beginning was pretty rough. It took a few chapters before I felt invested enough to keep on turning the pages, but once it clicked, the feeling of needing to know what happened next stayed with me up until the end. Meyer did a great job with the story-telling, combining romance, friendship and a bigger conflict. Instead of filling this book with physical action scenes, Meyer chose a slightly quieter route where she convinced readers to care about these characters and then presented us with a moral conflict that fits the context of their story. Doing so could have potentially backfired, but it definitely ended up working well.If what I've said in my review isn't enough to convince you to read the book, maybe the knowledge that I actually teared up while reading it will. I was that emotionally invested in Wanderer's story, and Melanie's too! Meyer caught me off guard with how good I found The Host. If you're unsure whether or not to give this book a try, let me be the first to suggest you give it a chance because you might just be surprised like I was.

I read this book back in my mid-teens when I was a huge Twilight fan and discovered that this was the same author.Though this is more for young adults rather than teens, the story has changed my view of life and humanity in ways I did not expect. I highly reccomend this book and this hardcover edition. The fact that this story is completely possible in some distant future is what I like the most though. That, and the fact that it's not your typical science fiction/futuristic story. It's more about the discovery of the true essence of being human.About the prose and the story itself--compelling, marvelously written, gets you real emotional at times, makes you identify and sometimes scream out loud... it's all that and more. Buy it! what you waiting for?! Don't watch the movie, read this!

I read this novel in 2013 and found it much different from her Twilight series and much better than the movie of this book. The story is told from Wanderer's point of view. Her people exist by being implanted into other beings and taking over their lives. Sounds like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" without the absence of emotion present with the aliens in that movie. This is the only way they can exist off their home planet and they have invaded and taken over many planets. Ironically they are a peaceful species and the humans that are turned into hosts mostly cease to exist, but the Souls retain the memory of their hosts. Wanderer's host is Melanie, a rebel female who stays present in Wanderer's mind and eventually they work together. There is also the added twist of romance with one man who loved Melanie and another who loves Wanderer, but both women share one body. I like the time the author takes to develop the human relationships with Wanderer which is at first hostile, violent and suspicious, but evolves with the help of Melanie's uncle. This isn't a flashy plot with guns blazing, but instead focuses on relationships, day to day existence, discovery, trust in both human and alien.

Give this book a chance. Stephanie Meyer really did a great job on this one. The characters are compelling and you like almost all of them. the themes and conflicts are an exciting breath of fresh air. Meyer's writing has really improved over the course of her career and I feel like this book really showed what she could do better than anything else she's written. The beginning of the book is a little slow, which is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. It's all important and I would never suggest to skip it but get through the first hundred pages. When the story changes (you'll know it when it happens), you won't be able to put this one down. I was set to be disappointed by this one in the beginning but it's one of my favorites now.

The author is obviously best known for the Twilight saga so I wasn’t expected a bad book. The gal can write but wow. This book blew me away. I saw the movie years and years ago and don’t remember much. I can’t compare the two but the book is extraordinary. It is rich in detail, inner and outer dialogue, character development and intrigue. It had a slow start but once Mel/Wanderer got going and truly began her journey, I was hooked.Meyer is a gem. I’m reading The Chemist next and pray it’s half as good. Please keep writing, Stephanie! We need more strong female authors who continue their craft.
