malice of crows, book three in lila bowen's shadow series. it may be my favorite thus far, which is really saying something because wake of vultures and conspiracy of ravens are utterly amazing. once again, we join world weary cowboy and supernatural avenger, rhett walker, who used to be nettie lonesome, and his traveling band of motley survivors, monsters, and societal outcasts (women, people of color, shapeshifters, folks with pleasantly flexible concepts of gender) as they seek a dangerous necromancer who has possessed the body of a child. bowen writes with a delightfully wicked edge, and our heroes encounter a steady stream of enchanted spiders, scorpions, gila monsters, and other critters that would do them harm. bowen captures the spirit and texture of the old west and cowby life, as well as existing on the margins, with vivid clarity. but what really makes malice an exceptional book, is the way bowen deftly confronts gender expectations and norms, as well as race and class disparity, within the confines of this engaging and gripping story. it made me angry, it made me laugh out loud, it made me sad, but most of all it made me smile. eagerly anticipating the fourth installment.
I love these books. I admit to being late to the party in regards to this series, but it is soooo good. I devoured the first three just in time for the release of Treason Of Hawks. I love these characters. Delilah writes them so beautifully. A must read for lovers of fantasy.
That's the ending? You are as mean as Chuck Wendig! Now not only do I have to wait to see how the Miriam Black ending turns out, I have this one too. Cliffhangers are so cruel. I wish pre-ordering made the books come faster.
Loved it. Lila Bowen's Shadow series gets better with each installment. There's not much else out there like this series, and I like it a lot.
I have enjoyed the character development through out the series. They need to be read in order to fully understand the story line which is a bit different..Even though its a bit disturbing the novel shows us a bit of what it was like to live in the old west and not be white. The problem I have with this book is that it just ended..There is no hint about what happens to any pf the main characters but 1 because he died..I was left with a whats next question that is not answered unless there is another book coming.
"Malice of Crows" is the third book in a fantasy series with the most inclusive cast of characters imaginable, set in the Old West, of all places. The story is still going strong and interesting and important things happen along a journey to the big conflict, keeping the reader invested. I'm looking forward to the 4th (and final?) book.
This series is wonderful. Serious, but light-hearted. Incredible LGBT and minority rep. Never thought i'd find that in a western!
