Guy Delisle was born in Quebec City, Canada. His bestselling and acclaimed travelogues (Pyongyang, Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City, Burma Chronicles, and Shenzhen) are defining works of graphic nonfiction, and in 2012, Delisle was awarded the top prize in European cartooning when the French edition of Jerusalem was named Best Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. He lives in France with his wife and children.

Guy Delise's graphic novel Hostage (2016) is a return in style to his successful autobiographical graphic novels that drew on his experiences as an animator in Chin and North Korea as well as his experiences with his family in his wife's job as a member of Doctor's Without Frontiers. However, this time he is writing a biography of a Doctors Without Borders administrator Christophe André was kidnapped by armed men and taken away to an unknown destination in the Caucasus region in 1997. It chronicles the stoic experience of a hostage in Chechnya fighting depression and killing boredom by reacting famous battles form history. I don't want to give away the ending, but it is a powerful story of survival in the face of misery.

Guy Delisle's graphic storytelling of the ordeal of Christophe André at the hands of Chechnyan kidnappers is impossible to put down once started. With an amazingly detailed account from the memory of André, we are pulled into the horror and uncertainty of his situation. Suddenly his priorities change from being an administrator to trying to keep his sanity and to focus on the situation at hand without panicking. The reader is pulled into his world through the use of time, knowing the date and which day of the week it is his only link to the outside world. When we get to the nexus of the story the prisoner is faced with a life or death decision, whether to take this chance at escape and risk the consequences of being caught or to wait until the ransom demands are successfully negotiated. A story of a man in a room handcuffed to a radiator should not be filled with such suspense as this book is. Highly recommended.

In 1997, an NGO worker, Christophe André, was held hostage in Chechnya. His horrifying story is told in this book in a graphic novel format. The art and storytelling are both wonderful. It did get a bit repetitive, but that’s done intentionally, in order to show how repetitive and painful his days were. It perfectly matches his own experience.I have such admiration for his strength and perseverance, how he was able to keep himself together, and not break down mentally.

Incredible life story superbly narrated! A tale of human limits. The quality of the drawings and of the narration in such a confine environment is nailed perfectly. A must read! This book has to win Grand Prix d' Angouleme if it has not done so.

Fantastic book. Delisle captures the horror of being held captive in a single room while chained. I was amazed by all the different perspectives he offered in his drawings of a single space. This is one of Delisle's best.

I heard the author on NPR and really enjoyed the book. I got a real feel for Christophe Andre's isolation and despair.

Great, true story graphic novel. I felt anxiety during this story and was turning pages so fast to learn what happens next. I loved it.

Great story. You would think that a story of a guy stuck in a room for months would be a bore to read. On the contrary, Guy Delisle makes the daily challenge of the main character to stay intellectually and emotionally "alive" a great read.
