I have been reading this anthology for years and was delighted to have an advance reader's copy from Amazon Vine this year. I routinely also read the Best American Essays and the Best American Short Stories. My personal favorite, by far, is the Best American Science and Nature Writing. Not only are the essays beautifully written and informative, they are usually deeply thoughtful. Many of them narrate a particular instance that is fascinating in itself and suggests a larger message. One example of this is Elizabeth Kolbert's essay "The Big Kill." Here, she describes the broad based efforts in New Zealand to get rid of small mammals such as rats and skoats that have been introduced and have become invasive, killing off the flora and slowly destroying the natural habitats of native birds. When you begin reading the essay you are appalled at the mass efforts to enlist even children in the trapping and killing of the little mammals. But as you read you step back, along with the author to see the bigger picture of the overall environment and you gradually shift toward understanding and endorsement of the efforts to get rid of the invasive species. But Kolbert is telling you this story because it points to a larger reference. The people of New Zealand are up against tremendous odds as the invasive species have exploded. But they have taken it on and are going after the problem with commitment, inventiveness and resources. Kolbert uses the example of New Zealand to make her point about what we should be --and are mostly not -- doing about climate change. In her words:"Even taking the long view -- the very long view -- the threat posed to New Zealand's fauna by invasive species is extraordinary. It may be unprecedented in the 80 million years that New Zealand has existed. But we live in an age of unprecedented crises. We're all aware of them, and mostly we just feel paralyzed, incapable of responding. New Zealanders aren't wringing their hands, nor are they telling themselves consolatory tales about the birth of novel ecosystems.' They're dividing their neighborhoods into grids and building better possum traps . . . ."In this review I have focused on just this one essay as it provides an example of the kind of excellence throughout the anthology. The essays are quite varied in topic and voice, and they are not all as good as this one, but as a whole the collection is really wonderful, thought provoking, and a joy to read.

Another great addition to the Best American Science & Nature series. I noticed that some other reviewers have been commenting on how the selections were more about people and society than hard science. But that's what makes science writing meaningful and purposeful; what is the point of science if not for the advancement of humanity and improving our quality of life? Finding a more efficient way to produce electricity--cool! Why do we care? Because it's helping the poor of India live better lives. Mapping out a totally undiscovered cave system--beyond awesome! But what makes this worth reading? The human struggle, the sweat, tears, and sacrificed sleep it took to accomplish this. If you want cold, hard science, this is not the book for you. Go read an academic journal instead.

Fascinating articles on science and nature, including subjects such as human health and how it is affected by light, and how a focus on genetics has made plant cultivation and development a scientific craft that could be compared to the process of software development. I also learned much more about the patent process for plants and other scientific discoveries. This book got me through a whole day of sitting and waiting while I was on jury duty.

The collection is light on hard science and long on human interest stories. The writing itself is uniformly good, but when I consider the state of science literacy in American society, I would have hoped for more content. That being said, the extensive reading list of other 2014 science articles is a valuable resource.

I really enjoyed reading this collections due to its wide range of excellent articles. As a science teacher I enjoy writing that enlightens and inspires and this collection certainly does both of those well. I will consider getting each yearly edition to have timely articles for my students and myself to read, discuss, and digest.

A wide variety of science/nature topics and viewpoints are represented. I like the fact that these are collected from many different sources, some I usually wouldn't read or even know about. If a particular article doesn't interest you, the next one surely will. This collection comes out each year with a different person selecting the articles and doesn't disappoint.

This outstanding collection of writing should be shared widely. Every essay has messages that tell about important science that should be understood by the public. I hope many high school teachers of virtually any subject will find from this collection assignment that will both challenge and inspire their students.

This is a disappointing collection. Several essays are simply uninteresting, and hard to objectively classify as 'the best' of 2015. Two short pieces by one Jourdan Imani Keith, and and essay about the study of 'curiosity' by Kim Todd fall in this category. An article by Meera Subramanian on New York City's efforts at coping with rising sea levels and 'hurricane Sandy' type events is well-written, but somewhat abstruse. Hard to know what the editor, Rebecca Skloot, was thinking when she picked these pieces for inclusion in this volume.A couple of the essays are quite good. The most riveting, 'Aftershocks,' describes in fascinating detail the conviction, for involuntary manslaughter, of a half dozen Italian seismologists for failing to warn the public about an earthquake that struck a remote area of Italy late in the last decade.

I read this series every year, found this one lacking.In previous years, some of the contributions have been most thought provoking, for me anyway this was not the case for the 2015 collection. Maybe 2015 was a year with less choice for the executive editor....
