Every Amazon order now, I have to search for. They are now always marked as "handed to the recipient", when in fact they were just thrown on the door. Or, in the case of this one, it was "Left in the mailroom". I don't have a mailroom! I know these reviews are for the quality of the product, and the quality of this one was great, but the shoddy manner of getting the product to you these days by Amazon, and the false entries of which they represent they delivered it (quite often, rain soaked because they didn't even ring the bell or knock, even though a resident was home", is making the end state of what could have been a good product, a sloppy mess. Since Amazon no longer has an area to comment about the "packaging", where else can one put this poor quality practice and illustration of outright lies now? Tell me Amazon, unless you elect to sensor this review too, as I can't be alone in this frustration.

May Contain Spoilers: I liked Kalona's Fall because Kalona was one of the most well developed characters in the series. My only concern with this book is that it seemed to skip over the most important parts of the story. The beginning where Kalona and Erebus were created and won over Nyx was good, but I really wanted to be more involved with the struggle Kalona had with darkness. His "fall" was only really contained in one chapter of an already short novella. I just feel like this part could have been a little more detailed. Otherwise, this book gives far more information on all of the immortals than we had previously seen in the regular House of Night Series.

Not simply written like the HON series. But, overall very intriguing. When I started reading the book I was uncertain if I could follow it thru to the end. After a few pages I was hooked. I kept reading and couldn't lay it down. I was sad to see "The End". Would recommend anyone who is a HON fan to read Kalona's Fall. I loved reading the details of why KALONA fell. And, I now have a new found love for Erebus. Made me wish Nyx had chosen him in the beginning instead of Kalona. He's so sweet and so sincere. He truly exists to make Nyx happy even if it means helping her to get Kalona back.

Kalona was one of my favorite characters. I’m so glad the authors gave us a history on Kalona and Nyx’s history and how he fell to earth. I do wish there was more of after his fall, however I thoroughly enjoyed his story.

Really happy with my books! Good condition and wasted no time receiving them!

This book answered a lot of questions about Kalona so if you read the House of night series you should read this one, if you have not read the House of night series then you need to read those first. The book seemed short and I felt like it was too extreme. I figured Kalona had to do something horrible to "fall" and was a bit surprised at the reason. Though I didn't enjoy this book as much as the other house of night books I would still recommend you read it.

Such a house of night fan of Zoey and the gang and Kalona story always made me wonder... And now that I've read his story and his past I understand his role... And he's my favorite character for he struggles with his feelings and understanding. He must over come himself and his ways before he can move on and be what he wishes to Nyx.

Draws the reader in on the first chapter. Very descriptive and emotional writing style. I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. So much character development and emotions. The authors describe the background settings with so much stunning details that the reader feels like you are stand right there taking in the view! I love this book and will read it over and over again. A new favorite to add to my collection.

#2,453 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I gave my 7-year-old grandson this set, because his mother said that he really liked the preceding books in the series. Therefore I will post his review, as expressed in the thank-you note I received today: "Dear Grandma, Thank you for the Box Set of Magic Tree House books #13-16. I've read #13 and #14 and am halfway through #15. They are the best Magic Tree House books I've ever read." Obviously, a hit!

I purchased these books for my 8 year old. I have had a hard time finding books that are full of great content but still age appropriate for her. Most are full of drama and disrespectful kids. These have really peaked her interest. I love that they are getting her excited about history and reading in general. She likes to read them aloud to her little sister before bed so they are both learning. It's really a win, win. Before we discovered The Magic Tree House series it was difficult to get her excited about reading. Now she can't wait to finish one book so she can read the next one. Great series, great books! I highly recommend.

My 7 year old grandson and I have been reading these books for about 9 months. We started with #1 and are now on #14. The books are about a young brother and sister and their adventures. Each book is 10 chapters with some pictures. My grandson could only read a couple lines by himself when we started, but he now reads whole pages on his own. He's learned alot about history, other countries and their customs without realizing that he's learning. I would definitely recommend this book series.

We read these books to our 5-year-old every night. Usually 2-4 chapters at a time depending on how tired he is. He likes them, they're light on pictures but the language is simple enough that he can follow along without any challenge. Some of the books get into things like dead bodies but it hasn''t been any source of drama with our son, just a few questions and then on we go with more stories.

My son is nine years old and really loves these books. They are easy to read, teach about different times and locations, and are fun for him. Having a series like this makes it easy for him to follow along with the characters. These are the first chapter books that he was brave enough to venture reading and the pictures help keep his interest. Highly recommended for both boys and girls!

My daughter absolutely loves the Magic Tree House series. The books are written for elementary students with definitive chapters that serve as stopping and starting points for them, but each book carries over from one to the next like a television series. Yes, you could skip around, but the books are so much more fluid if you read them in groupings so all of the mysteries can be solved with the clues. There aren't enough wonderful things to be said about these books.

I could not order these books fast enough for my 7 year old daughter. I bought the first 8 books for her to take on our vacation this summer, and she read them all before we even started packing for the trip. I ended up ordering the remaining 20 books, and she finished them quickly, as well. I just ordered books 29-49, and she cannot wait for the next set to arrive! Highly recommend these books, especially for children who are just transitioning to chapter books.

Great engaging books for kids. My grandson began reading these books in second grade and still enjoys them end of 3rd grade, he got them yesterday and read one already in one night, read instead of choosing iPad! Great book!

I get it, structure thinking, MECE, problem solving, those are awesome tools for the modern business man. Thanks for that. It's the parts about having a secretary, how important it is to be organized so your wife don't find out you're cheating on her, the implication of having to be a man to succeed at McKinsey that I don't like.Having the book digital and in out Kindles maybe someone new at McKinsey would be able to update the book and bring it to the 21st century. Most of the content is great, but couldn't shake this feeling of reading something Don Draper wrote in the 60's the entire time.

This book's worth reading if you are a consultant or wish to become one. Don't expect the mystique and dark secrets of McKinsey to be revealed. The "way" is quite simple and obvious to experienced consultants; but probably what new consultants need to accelerate their technique. The style of the book is a little frivolous for my liking in places. It could do with a decent editor. Grammatical mistakes abound and some of the content could do with it's own medicine - MECE. Waffle and padding abound. In summary: it's worth reading, but take note that the author only spent 3 years at McKinsey and, based on an average engagement length of 6 months, that means about 6 engagements (assuming one engagement at a time). Is that enough to qualify as an authority on the Firm & its "way"? And then there's this constant reference to one consultant named McDermott - shouldn't he just have written the book himself?

Advice is very high level; not exactly a deep dive into McKinsey practices but more of an overview of problem solving and critical thinking as it relates to projects. I understand that the author was trying to make the content relatable to a wide audience, but it comes across as very generic.Reader beware: this book was written in 1999. Methodologies and tools have changed dramatically and I do not believe there has been any revisions/new editions.I would not recommend this book to experienced consultants, but if you are in college and considering consulting then this could be a great introductory text.

It's a decent book but it's clear that the writer is not one of the top partners and you can sense from it that you don't get too deep into the strategic part of McKinsey. It's interesting though as there are few books getting even close to this. Thanks

Outstanding perspective from some of the greatest Business minds. Read for my NBA program, re-read for myself. Highly recommended read!

This book is nothing special because it contains no revolutionary\evolutionary business concepts that are unique. To be sure, it contains lot of good business anecdotes you will find in most business books. But if you want to find out what makes McKinsey's business practice so special and so much better than its competitors, the book leaves a lot wanting. Furthermore, the book is full of generalities, for example, the chapter on interviewing for facts was nice, but again, nothing special. You would be far better off buying specialty books on such matters. I think this would be a good book to buy if you want to enter into consulting or are looking to work for McKinsey. For others, however, the book does not break any new ground nor provides any brainstromy insights. Rather, it is full of nice business generalities and suggestions.

It's a quick read and may learn something. If you have been a consultant, nothing new for you here

As you probably know if you're reading this, if you search for anything "McKinsey" or "consulting" this book is often at the top of your search results, and as you also probably know if you've been looking for a good book on McKinsey, nothing else promises what this provocative title does. I read the reviews and I thought I knew what to expect. Many people said the book was filled with generalities and wasn't useful to anyone with graduate or real world business experience. I took that into consideration but being a 2nd year undergrad I thought I should find at least a few enlightening ideas. Some people even recommend it as useful for the "16-21" crowd, but I would charge even for the average achiever in college the book falls short of expectations and is not worth owning. I'd recommend skimming a borrowed copy though, just to satisfy your temptation for a glimpse at the "McKinsey Way".

When I was learning to play jazz guitar I struggled for years to figure out how to play at really fast tempos until I learned the secret of memorizing 3 and 4 note 'motives' that I had so well memorized that I could play them with out thinking. Think of this book as 5334 chess 'motives'. These are the 'guitar licks' of chess. Play them over and over and over until you don't even have to think when you see them. They become automatic. Then when your clock is ticking you won't miss that 3 move checkmate that you only had 60 seconds to find. It does no good at all to build up a winning position if you cannot finish off your opponent quickly and efficiently. There are plenty of sites on the internet where you can practice tactics. They will NOT do what this book does, which is systematically train your eyes to recognize the patterns of trapping and killing an opponent's King. The ONLY problem with this book is it is BIG and the diagrams are rather small... But, hey! That is because it is a treasure trove. One hour a day every day with this book and your chess 'eyes' will improve without fail. After working on this book for weeks the one unexpected takeaway is that the beauty of these puzzles eventually turns working on tactics from a drudgery into something inspiring and fascinating. I never quite appreciated the aesthetics of chess as much as I do now after being shocked and awed by the beauty of something as seemingly simple as a mate in two.

I bought kindle version. I read it through kindle cloud reader in web browser, ipad and iphone. It is quite good. The format is one puzzle per page. The image can be magnified to whole page and easy to read. The answers of puzzle are located on appendix. There is a link in each puzzle in which link to the answer. There is also a link in answer page to go back to original puzzle page. It is convenience to check answer. The mate in 1 puzzles are easy but mate in 2 or 3 are more difficult. It is a good training to my calculation skill.

Beginner or expert, this remarkable book of exercises can help you learn chess tactics--the bread and butter of successful play. I own this book in hard copy--a massive boat anchor--and as soon as I found it in Kindle format. The convenience is incredible--the print form sits on my shelf of chess books, unused, but this is getting full use.Do understand that it's a perfect book for the beginner, since the "mate in 1" problems will help the novice to understand both simple and quite sophisticated piece moves. Learn the piece moves, and immediately begin to see and solve fundamental chess problems...a fun and practical way for the beginner to learn the essentials of piece placement, critical squares, and the full range of tactical moves for success. The more difficult problems will challenge club, expert, and even master-level players, so you can benefit from this book at whatever level you achieve. At $3, this is indispensible.

Great book. It will keep any chess player occupied for a long time. The problems start from mate in one with endgame scenarios up to mate in three. The combinations section afterward is very good as well. I must warn once you get pass the introduction there is nothing but problems no words or annotations just at the top of the page it will say white or black mate in (scenario 1-3). I'm new to chess but fell in love with the game I got the book for Christmas this year and I'm already of problem 1102 (I tried my own version of the 7 circles chess program I had off work for about a week and a half for the holidays and just tackled the problems) My friend who is rated around 1900 says this is a good book to have. I looked up the Polgar sisters and see why they are as good as they are having this training as early as 5 years old and sticking with it is genius in its selfirst. I'm enjoying this book a lot.

Fantastic. My advice is to get the 'hard cover', as people are complaining about the lack of readability of the Kindle and the paperback. The hard cover is easy to use and will last a life time. SPEND THE MONEY. This book improved my game, in as little time as a few days. My child will go from the children's books 'Chess Camp', to this Polgar book.

Sharpen your chess and general concentration skills with this massive collection of chess problems.I thought I would fly through this rather quickly but years away from the chess board have taken their toll. This is a great resource for me to get back in the saddle.

The claim by so many chess writers that "the best way to improve your game is by playing" is sheer nonsense. I played a lot and lost continually in early high school without improving one bit. This is because I didn't know what the difference was between a good move and a bad one. Also, I had no idea why my oponents made the moves they did. Playing didn't make me better; it just made me give up the game until now. I'm 61 and have just discovered how to improve my game and thereby actually enjoy playing chess. The biggest improvement came after I began studying Polgar's "Chess: 5334 Problems..." The first thing Polgar taugh me was how to look at the entire board. I'm still working through this book and it contiues to be a help to me.The second book that has improved my play is Chernev's "Logical Chess, Move by Move." It has helped me to discover the answer to the question, Why did my oponent do that? Now that I've learned what chess is all about -- beyond just moving pieces -- I can finally say that, yes, playing improves my game. But I would suggest, before playing yourself into frustration like I did, buy and study these two helpful books.

The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans, by Patricia Klindienst

From Publishers Weekly

Though Klindienst imposes a strong philosophical structure on the narratives in this poetic collection, her political interpretations come second to the beauty and humor in what is essentially a set of portraits of both American gardens and gardeners. Woven into these stories are wide-ranging details of agricultural history: how to make blue corn piki bread, how the injustice of post-emancipation land sales affected one farmer, the fragrance of the sweet-sticky-pumpkin flower brought by refugees from Cambodia. Klindienst's writing shines when recounting her conversations with farmers, but her analysis of "hunger for community" and how a "garden can be a powerful expression of resistance" feels awkward. Luckily, between the prologue and the epilogue, Klindienst provides an unpretentious and touching tour of the increasingly rare corners of the country where land is worked by friendly locals who know the differences between five types of basil and can jaw for hours about plants, soil and the weather: "Oh golly let me see. It would be the bush beans," says one woman when asked about the type of seed she's been saving the longest (70 years, in this case). This book's broad scope touches on the best of nature writing, singing the rhythm of growth in both plants and people.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Klindienst celebrates gardens created by immigrants who resisted the intense pressure to assimilate into mainstream American society, in a lyrical account of her three-year journey to collect the stories of ethnic Americans for whom gardening is tantamount to cultural endurance. Survivors of the Pol Pot regime fled the killing fields of Cambodia for the healing fields of New England, while the Yankee inheritor of land wrested generations ago from Native Americans during the infamous Pequot Massacre of 1637 atones for that atrocity through the simple act of sharing seeds of corn with the tribe's descendants. Klindienst profiles 15 valiant and thoughtful gardeners intent on preserving their native birthright and on restoring and protecting their adopted land, individuals and families evincing a stewardship that not only resists cultural absorption but also sustains an ecological imperative. A look at how culture and food intersect. This book is a great for explaining how the connection between food & history & culture come together as a whole. I would highly suggest reading this if you love food culture.

Fantastic read if you like gardening and culture and food!

I love this book. It is a great resource with exceptional understanding of the topics as discussed . Used as a compliment to other reading materials.

People have been talking about food justice for years. They're also been talking about local food. From a completely different angle, this book happens to unite the two [way back in 2006]. Food justice doesn't just compliment local food in a practical way; food is culture. Everyone in the US came here at some point in history, and brought some form of culture with them [even the Native Americans, although we don't know what their culture was like before they were native]. And these cultures all still give meaning and purpose to the lives of these people today. Often times, the only way left for them to preserve their heritage–after the loss of their land, their language, their clothing, their communities–is by growing and eating the food of their ancestors. And our author Klindienst doesn't sidestep the brutality and violence with which "immigrants" or "foreigners" [many of whom have lived here for generations] are perpetually oppressed. This book is both beautiful and eye-opening, even for someone who's been thinking a lot about food, cultivation, culture, and privilege for some time now.

Last summer I received this book as a surprise gift from my son's partner. Its author is a like an aunt to her, and she thought I might enjoy it. I was very touched by this generous gesture and certainly hoped to like it; its vivid cover looked inviting and the topic intriguing, but my expectations were modest at best. Dutifully I delved into it - lo and behold, I didn't just like it. I loved it. The writing is lyrical, the stories are powerful. Its narratives, chronicling the experience of people bringing forth food from the earth, put this book squarely on the shelf with Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle and Pollon's Omnivore's Dilemma.English lacks a word for people who grow their own food while working a day job: hence the book's dissertation-length title, The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans. "Gardener" connotes flowers more than edibles; "farmer" and "grower" suggest fulltime professionals, and "subsistence farmer" conjures up hardscrabble sharecropping. Our closest term is kitchen or cottage gardeners. The author highlights eight gardens, each created and nurtured by people whose pleasure in growing things and deep reverence for the earth are powerfully and poetically expressed - especially captivating since few of them would be comfortable writing their observations and experiences. The reader feels privileged to sit in on the dialogue between author and subject - lush descriptions jump off each page, allowing us to see, smell, taste, and feel the bounty of these gardens. Each day's sequence of harvesting, preparing, preserving, and eating, along with endless garden tasks, including saving the best seeds for the next year's planting, come to life.Klindienst skillfully recreates the narratives of these gardeners speaking their truths and sharing their intimate knowledge of producing sustenance; their garden labors sustain them spiritually as well as physically. Most of them are immigrants who bridge their old homes and their new by connecting with the earth. Meet the Khmer growers of Western Massachusetts, aging immigrant survivors of genocide. Over time they have created a flourishing New England community garden featuring South Asian fruits and vegetables. In their garden these two sisters are at home, at peace. From early spring to late fall they are busy every minute nurturing both their plants and the younger family and community members who help out; their organic produce is in great demand by local fans and restaurants. When the harvest season ends, the garden's proceeds fund wat restorations and schools in their home village in Cambodia as well as new local Massachusetts Buddhist communities. When winter settles in their aches, traumas, and flashbacks reappear. Cooped up indoors all winter, they long for their garden, a surrogate for their past lives, only feeling hopeful again when spring revives their spirits.Visit with Klindienst in Ruhan Kainth's Punjabi garden in Fullerton, California. Had she stayed in her comfortable home in India, Ruhan would have enjoyed the many privileges of high economic status, but she would not have been free to garden - in her home culture, such work is considered beneath her. She learned about the wonder of growing things by collecting tenant farmers' rent for her physician father who worked abroad. In California she can, and does, grow everything she wants. Her South Asian American friends find it all very puzzling. Why would she want to get dirty? A visit to her recreated semi-tropical garden answers that question - she has her own private paradise, a quarter acre with over 50 fruits, vegetables, and herbs, including the centerpiece, a neem tree, one of only a few in North America. I gave a copy of this book to my South Asian friend Meenal, a newbie gardener, and recommended this particular chapter. When her parents recently went back for a visit to their native India, they asked Meenal what she might like them to bring back. Her answer: "Seeds!" So Ruhan already has already raised up a disciple. Perhaps one day Ruhan and Meenal will even trade their best seeds along with their stories, who knows? The last of its eight chapters chronicles the wondrous story of Whit Davis, an 11th generation Connecticut farmer who has recently presented revered Indian white flint corn to the descendants of the Native Americans displaced by his colonial ancestors. Along with the seed corn, he sends the following instructions via the author, who is doing the actual presentation: "Tell them they should plant two, three fields of it and to keep them separated. After three, four years, they should take the best seed from all three and mix them together and start again. That way they keep the corn strong. Tell them that I wish them well. Tell them that I wish them good luck in all their endeavors." I gave a copy of this book is my nephew Neil, a PhD in eco-biology, now a plant biologist developing drought resistant corn, and directed him to Whit's story. Neil was astounded to read Whit's instructions, because they describe precisely the methodology he and his team utilize in their experimental fields. We live in a time of keen interest in food politics and increasing ecological concern. One of the books strengths is its subtlety in these matters. The stories tell themselves, but they also enhance the reader's awareness of the need to support local farmers, preserve open space, and protect seed banks from corporate, monopolistic control. This book is suffused with deep and ancient wisdom. It is more than just an oral history book; it is a sacred text, helping us to relearn deep reverence and spiritual connection.Considering how drawn in I was by Klindienst's work, it came as no surprise to me when I learned that she has won a 2007 American Book Award for The Earth Knows My Name. This prize highlights writing which expresses America's multicultural heritage. Just one suggestion: read the prologue after reading the main body of the book, at which point you will have fallen in love with all her subjects, and realize what an artful volume Patricia Klindienst has created. By then, reading her own story will make more sense. Another reading tip: there is a coherent order to the chapters, but each stands on its own, so no need to read them in sequence.Warning: this book is powerful. Don't be surprised if, come spring, you find yourself planting a cottage garden....

In the early 1970's Studs Terkel traveled across the country interviewing people about their work, and eventually compiled the interviews into the book Working. In the early 2000's, Patricia Klindienst took a similar approach, traveling around the USA to interview ethnic gardeners, immigrants who maintain their cultural identity through their connection to the earth. While The Earth Knows My Name will never be a musical, it is a marvellous testament to the importance of earth and water, seed and plant, and in sustaining not just our ethnic roots, but also our whole selves. Her words bring to life the feeling of warm sun on your back while you plant corn, or crisp autumn mornings harvesting beans. She lets you smell the scent of flowers, but also taste the flavor of language, in her profiles of 15 gardeners. This book is well written, it is poignant, and it is gently honest, with the author's love of gardening, and sincere respect for her subjects masking the inevitable political undercurrents. My only complaint is that there should have been more pictures - I craved a coffee-table presentation, with Klindienst's words matched to lush photographs. But maybe the mind's eye is the better viewing choice.
