Daughter of the Siren Queen (Daughter of the Pirate King), by Tricia Levenseller

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—The author has yet again captured the adventure, romance, and ruthless ways of the high seas in this sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King. It picks up with the story of Alosa, a half-siren, half-human princess who is captain of the Ava-lee, a ship with an almost all-women crew. The group is a hardened lot made up of top-notch fighters. It's also a very tight-knit family. Alosa has finally recovered the last piece of an ancient map that will lead her father to the ultimate treasure. When she and her crew reach her father's keep, they discover that Alosa's mother, a siren, has been held captive by her father for 18 years. Alosa was always told that her mother abandoned her. In order to free her mother, Alosa knows she will have to face her father and his fleet of 20-plus pirate ships. The book's main focus is the upcoming showdown between the betrayed daughter and her legendary cruel father. Threaded throughout is a secondary story line about the budding romance between Riden and Alosa. The protagonist refuses to give into her feelings until she realizes that Riden is the only one who can help her control the her siren side. This fast-moving adventure with strong female characters would be great for those who love a good pirate story, a touch of romance, and action-packed sword fighting. VERDICT A strong choice for fantasy fans and those who enjoyed Traci Chee's The Reader or Heidi Heilig's books.—Erin Olsen, The Brearley School, New York City

Praise for Daughter of the Siren Queen:"This lady Jack Sparrow is back, and she's fiercer and wittier than ever!" ―Elly Blake, New York Times bestselling author of Frostblood"Levenseller is just as much a siren as her protagonist―her words will pull you in, and there's no escaping them." ―Charlie N. Holmberg, author of The Paper Magician Series."Levenseller comes into her own in this sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King (2017), penning an argh-worthy blend of pirate derring-do and lively romance. ... Deadly sirens join the ranks of strong, smart females in this book, giving it a definite feminist edge." --Booklist"The author has yet again captured the adventure, romance, and ruthless ways of the high seas in this sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King. ... This fast-moving adventure with strong female characters would be great for those who love a good pirate story, a touch of romance, and action-packed sword fighting." ―School Library Journal "This is for fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise who will definitely be on board with this female Jack Sparrow and her crew." -- VOYAPraise for Daughter of the Pirate King:"Readers should rejoice, because we now have a lady Jack Sparrow on our hands! Daughter of the Pirate King kidnapped my interest from the first chapter and never let it go! It's a superior debut with a deeply entangled romance, a fearsome heroine not to be trifled with, a clever hero that you seriously want to trifle with, and a plot twist that makes a rollercoaster seem stable. With a cunning plot, robust writing, and complicated characters, any reader will enjoy being manipulated in Levenseller's capable hands. Definitely for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, fierce heroines, slow-burning romances, and adventures that can turn sour in the space of a gasp. Not for fans of complacent heroines, soothing plots, or those who don't speak sarcasm." ―Anna Banks, author of the New York Times Bestseller Of Triton" Levenseller has created a formidable female character who can take care of herself as she makes some hard decisions. Hand to skilled readers seeking true adventure with swashbuckling, sword fighting, and a great problem-solving heroine." ―School Library Journal"Levenseller makes an impressive debut with this funny, fast-paced, and romance-dashed nautical fantasy, set in an alternate world of pirates, sirens, and myriad islands....This one’s not to be missed." ― Publishers Weekly, starred review"Tricia Levenseller's vivacious debut novel, the first in a duology, boasts stormy seas, sexy pirates, swordplay and a heroine who conquers all three with aplomb.... A rip-roaring high seas escapade with a tinge of fantasy, Daughter of the Pirate King will engage and enthrall its teen audience." ― Shelf Awareness

Probably more of a 3.5, but I'm rounding up because it was still fun for the most part!Daughter of the Siren Queen takes place two months after the ending to the last one with Alosa and her crew finally getting the last piece of the map to the island of sirens- and a massive treasure. While Alosa takes the man who had her prisoner captive, he tells a secret that her father has kept for years. Soon Alosa and her crew are in a race with the entire pirate fleet to get to the treasure first. She'll have to learn how to control her powers while putting up with Riden, who she is might have feelings for.For the most part I did really enjoy this book! It's a swashbuckling adventure that never slows down with a badass female pirate captain and her almost all female crew on the high seas. Alosa also has some interesting powers that she can not control. That is where lies the start of my major issue in this book: she can't seem to control her powers without the help of a man. But that is probably just my personal preference on it.The romance in this book? It's downright awful. While I enjoyed them together in the first book, this time it was 98% of Alosa actually abusing Riden and being mean to him throughout while he pretty much takes it, instead of ever fighting her back. Or being the interesting pirate he could have been. He is her whipping boy to yell at when things go wrong or to throw punches while he takes whatever. It had already been said that she is stronger than a normal woman so, that's a big no from me.As for that, I didn't have any other issues. Alosa was a strong heroine and while she was kind of bad, I loved seeing her interact with her crew, and I wouldn't mind seeing more adventures from them. It was very entertaining! Plus swordfighting, siren magic, and sailing to treasure just tickled my Pirates of the Caribbean loving heart.

Overall, I did enjoy this book, but nowhere near how I felt about the first one, which I absolutely loved. It took me a little bit to get into it and I had a hard time keeping the new names straight of Alosa’s crew members. I’m not sure if there were just too many new ones thrown at you at once or if it was because it had been a few months since I had read the first one. There wasn’t anything especially wrong with the story, so I’m just not exactly sure why this one didn’t grab my attention like the first one did. I missed Alosa’s cunning that she exuded in the first book. The introduction of the siren queen was just lackluster. There was so much build up for her story, but in the end there wasn’t really much story there. I also missed the intrigue and the romantic tension. For some reason, I just didn’t feel that burning connection like I did in the first one. I did feel it a little more towards the end, but that was it. I just kept wondering the whole time: Where is the fierce and witty Alosa from the first book?It was good. It was a fun adventure story, but after preordering it as soon as I finished reading the first one and the anticipation of months waiting, it sadly just did not live up.

Well, that was quite the adventure if I do say so myself. It took me so so long to read this and it really shouldn't have considering these are such fast and fun books. For some reason I really just had an issue getting into it. I felt like it didn't really need a sequel to it, nonetheless, I am glad we got one. It wasn't until I forced myself to sit down and really read it that I got interested in it, even then, I found some parts to just be really dull and disinteresting.Once I got past all of that, I actually did really enjoy it. It's still a fun quick read with some really awesome characters. I also really enjoyed specific things that happened in this book, like getting to delve more into the sirens and finding and learning more about Alosa's mother. I loved the progression of Alosa and Riden's relationship and how they grew to trust each other; though it definitely did bounce back and forth. They would argue and then turn around and make out right away; and this happened throughout almost the whole book, so it was slightly annoying.

Good

Haven't seen a book like this one. Exactly what it says Ketogenic Homemade Icecream. Easy to follow directions and each of the recipes had pictures. The nutritional facts were very helpful as well. One of my favorites is the choco-chip with vanilla bean. I don't add the salt like it calls for in the recipe and it still tasted great! The cherry bomb was also delicious. It was a good read and I definitely recommend to any newcomer to the keto diet.

Finally, ice cream that my whole family loves. I have been trying low carb (Keto) ice cream recipes since I started this diet in October. No luck until Elizabeth Jane's book. The Strawberry is to die for and I'm finally using my ice cream maker again. Thanks so much

Now I'm finally interested in using an ice cream maker I got for a gift years ago. Low carb ice cream is seldom available in stores, and is expensive unless on sale. It helps me stay on my low carb diet, the only one that allowed me to lose weight, and I intend to keep it off!

I wanted to write a review because when I got this I was surprised at how it is more like a pamphlet than a book. That initially made me feel swindled. HOWEVER, it is not disappointing because it is full color pictures of recipe after recipe, with no fluff and beautifully laid out.

It was more of a “booklet” than a book. Judging by the marketing materials, I thought it was going to give some “base” models for standard ice cream flavors and then laid out options to modify or make substitutions. It was literally just 20 random ice cream recipes of no higher quality than google. And there’s no explanation of reasons behind some of the non-traditional ingredients. Like, I’m okay with adding cottage cheese to something, just tell me why I’m doing it.

Being fairly new to the Keto lifestyle and being crazy about ice cream, this book not only made me understand far better certain ingredients and how they are used and why. This is an easy to understand and implement.I am so appreciative for this book and recipes!Only thing I wish she had included was the serving size.JET

I love the pictures, but I don't care for how flimsy it is. The "book" will be covered in ice cream ingredients in no time. Tried the peanut butter with avocado oil recipe last night and it didn't come out creamy as ice cream should be. We'll try a couple more... so far, not bad, but not amazing.

Several NON KETOGENIC RECIPES! Bananas? Peaches? Cherries! NOT KETO! Another one of many trying to get in on the latest apparently and scam a buck or two! What a shame! This could mean someone's health when using the diet for fighting cancer or utilizing it to control epileptic seizures!
