Review

"David Lesch is one of the very few outsiders who knows anything about either Assad or his highly secretive regime; all the other scholars of Syria are forced to look from the outside in."—E. Roger Owen, author of The Rise and Fall of Arab Presidents for Life (E. Roger Owen)"What separates this book from others on Syria and the Syrian uprising is the sense of immediacy that comes from Dr Lesch's long acquaintanceship with Bashar al-Assad and regime insiders and the anger and sorrow he feels about their betrayal of Syria." - James L. I was hoping for much more when I first got my hands on SYRIA: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF ASSAD by David W. Lesch. This country has been much in the news, and I've been following its deterioration quite closely. Beyond that, I've paid decades of attention to Syria since the time of Hafaz Assad. So, when I picked up this book I was expecting some insights into the structure and nature of Syrian society in general and the Baath Party in particular. After all, in examining any society it's essential to have some understanding of its deeper structures and divisions.Instead, I got pretty much an extended feed of news releases that I've been following since the Arab Spring first hit Damascus. Now if you're totally ignorant of the situation over there, I suppose that this book has some utility. But for anyone who wants to find the underlying strengths and weaknesses within the Assad regime, or how different sectarian elements inside of Syria have traditionally supported (or attempted to undermine the Assads) -- you will not find it in this book. The author makes a great deal about his personal contacts with Basher Assad and other high level Syrian officials. However, this is a very limiting perspective. It's somewhat like someone coming to Washington,DC -- interviewing some nabobs and trying to come to some conclusions about the nature of the USA. Such analyses are shallow, grounded in the "great man" theories of history. And unfortunately, I know almost as little about the nature of Syrian society as I did when I first picked up the book.In the final chapter, the author tries to give some scenarios as to anticipated paths that Syria will follow given the current state of disarray in that country. And even here, he fails. While in other parts of the book he pays some attention to the nature of power politics on the international scene, in his scenarios -- the actions of these players is almost nonexistent. For my money, I would have probably spent a wiser use of my time if I had perused Robert Fisk's old columns on Syria, or I'd gone to the BBC and Al Jazeera archives. This book is superficial in its treatment of both Assad's power base and Syrian society in general.

I found this book to be an easy read, and highly credible. The author has a background that makes him perfect to tell the story. The journey he takes you on gives one a much better understanding of what is going on now in Syria. You can see the evolution of Assad as a person, from someone unwillingly thrusted into the position he now holds and having to adapt and learn quickly to just survive, to one who became arrogant and corrupted by the power and successes he had. It is not written like a history book, instead the style of writing has you feel events unfolding as if real-time. I appreciated the author's sentiments, his initial praise for Assad, to his disappointment for what Assad has become. I think it would be very hard to get the same sense of Syria's present events in another book on Syria, this one is so personal and close to the actual events unfolding. It seems that so many books that have historical context (like this one) continually point out how stupid our foreign policy has been over the years, Bush a perfect example. This is another book that points out what could have been had we as a country a sensible approach to the middle east.Highly recommended.

The author isn't to blame. His style is definitely more impressive, and certainly richer than Dr. Ajami's "The Syrian Rebellion," but once again, the author is at a disadvantage of not knowing the deeper social dynamics, thus was unable to depict and relay those issues which helped create the Syrian sectarian dilemma. As for a serious negative point on the book, it makes the mistake of trying to depict the Syrian despot as a ruler in a dilemma of trying to balance between regional and international pressures and internal demands for freedoms. The problem is literally far more complex than that, and it wasn't given enough attention in explaining why and how the Syrian public were mobilized by the cause for freedom and how it slid into civil war. The dictator knew precisely what the social dynamics of his nation are. Due to meticulous control of the dissipation of information in the country, the regime alone is in a position of omnipotence while the population in every city or every social group knows virtually nothing about all others. This revolution, unfortunately, was the first time in which Syrians began to communicate. Suddenly, an explosion of opinions and facts began to flow in all directions. At the same time, the regime used his electronic army of trained individuals to spread misinformation, foment sectarian hatred, all the while detain the level headed activists in the nation while providing the revolutionary with the seed to arm the revolution. It provided it with actual individuals to tickle those angry emotions that had been stirred from leaked videos showing humiliating treatment of religious proportions, which only help magnify the sectarian feelings that weren't necessarily uncontrollable. The regime helped steer the revolution into a direction it thought would play to its advantage but had no idea that it would be completely out of its control once it was unleashed.

The author shows the inner dynamics of the conflict, the paranoia of the Syrian people that Assad plays to, and the divisions within the opposition.

A very thourough review of the recent troubles in Syria from a knowlegeable author without going into too much depth and analysis of the deep rooted Syrian problems.

The book gave me a lot of historical background and current affairs of Syria. After reading this book I came to know about the regime in Syria and some part of the world how they ruled their countries their own peoples.

Used it for my term paper in college level History course. Well known excellent author. Covers the subject very well .

The Birds of Ecuador, Vol. 1: Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy, by Robert S. Ridgely

Review

"The Field Guide volume, 'intended primarily for field use,' contains plates, distribution maps, and text geared toward the identification of all the birds of Ecuador (excluding the Galapagos Islands). Its companion, Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy, suggested 'for your library (or hotel room or even car),' covers the occurrence and systematics of these same species. Undoubtedly, the field guide will be the volume most often consulted; an excellent aid for field identification of Ecuadorian birds, it will also be useful in much of Colombia, northern Peru, and western Brazil. Illustrations make or break a field guide. The 96 color plates, all by Greenfield, are vibrant, clear, and very effective. They depict nearly the entire avifauna, including migrants and species known in Ecuador only from a single record. They also show many rarely illustrated plumages (such as in the highly polymorphic hawks and eagles). . . . The Field Guide will be indispensable to all field biologists and birdwatchers visiting Ecuador and northwestern South America."―Thomas S. Schulenberg, Science, September 14, 2001"What Ridgely and Greenfield have produced is arguably the most important publication on birds in the region since the appearance of Wetmore's. . . treatise on the birds of Panama a half-century ago. . . The accounts are compacted but chock-full of information, covering status, habitat, field marks, similar species, habits, and voice. Despited the fact that this is a supurb field guide, . . . it is the companion volume that elevates these books to a rarified standing. This book consists of accounts for all the species in the field guide. . . The second volume makes this set more than just a field guide and handbook. It makes it perhaps the single most important reference for students, professionals, and bird watchers interested in the birds of South America, one that will be a first source for decades."―Eirik A.T. Blom, Bird Watcher's Digest, November/December 2001"This long awaited, monumental two volume set reveals the ornithological secrets and diversity of this small Latin American nation. . . The two amassed so much information, they could not fit it inone book. . . The Birds of Ecuador is an incredible achievement and is most highly recommended."―Dan R. Kunkle, Wildlife Activist, No. 43, Autumn 2001"The long awaited Birds of Ecuador is finally out and the results are well worth the wait. The 2-volume set is a massive piece of work and the authors intended the 2-volume set to be used by both traveling birders and ornithologists. . . .Both volumes complement each other perfectly and are well worth the price. These volumes add tremendously to the available informaton of South American avifauna."―Oscar Carmona. Surfbirds Book Reviews, October 2001"The Birds of Ecuador is a monumental guide to the birds of this country and does a remarkable job of describing them all. . . . Volume 1 of Birds of Ecuador could stand alone as a resource; however, it is completed (and made much more useful) by the accompanying volume 2 with its illustrations, descriptions, and range maps. The two volumes of this title will remain the stand for this country and for other South American bird guides for a long time. It is highly recommended for any research library."―Alex Boss, University of Illinois at Chicago Library. E-Streams, Vol. 6, No. 1, January 2003"Many of us can only long to travel to exotic birding places in South America,. . . but Ridgely and Greenfield live the dream and generously share it with us through their exquisite writings and paintings. . . In summary, this is a thorough and thoughtful production that not only provides useful and complete information, but does so in a user-friendly manner. . . The decades-long wait for these volumes has been worth it!"―Geoff Carpentier, Birders Journal, Vol. 10, No. 6, December 2001/January 2002"Eagerly awaited though it was, this work surpasses all expectations. On my own past trips into the phenomenal birdland of Ecuador I have longed for good information, and here it is in a double shot: a superb field guide and a thorough reference volume, both indispensable. Robert S. Ridgely and Paul J. Greenfield have done a brilliant job of making this complicated avifauna accessible and understandable for the rest of us. Ornithology, birding, and conservation all stand to benefit tremendously from this landmark work."―Kenn Kaufman, author of Focus Guide to the Birds of North America"A monumental work that sets a new standard for South American bird guides, Birds of Ecuador fills a huge information vacuum. These volumes are a fitting tribute to the authors' passion and commitment to pass on their unparalleled knowledge of one of the world's richest avifaunas. Those who have not survived such a project cannot imagine the magnitude of this undertaking ―Ecuador's nearly 1600 bird species are here made accessible in a user-friendly format. Birders, ornithologists, and conservationists alike will all benefit from this landmark publication."―Steve N. G. Howell, author of A Bird-Finding Guide to Mexico"Birds of Ecuador is a tremendous and unique resource, not just for people interested in Ecuador, but for anybody interested in the birds of the Andean and Amazonian countries of South America. With its detailed distributional records and some of the first critical appraisals of the birds' subspecies and ecology, Volume One: Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy is for when you have time to really think about the birds. You won't have to lug this volume to the field with you, but you'll still have a convenient resource with which to find out more about the birds."―Douglas Stotz, The Chicago Field Museum of Natural History

While this 'field guide' to Ecuador has excellent plates it suffers in three very important ways. 1) It is huge! Yes, Ecuador has about twice as many birds as are typically seen in US guides, but because of the added text this book isn't going to be a practical travel book. 2) the plates and distribution are on different pages. When you use a guide like this in the field you find yourself having to spend more time flipping through the book. and (most importantly) 3) It EXCLUDES the Galapagos Islands! yes, there are plenty of guides for the Galapagos Islands. But if you bring them AND this book you are looking at some serious SERIOUS weight. So if they named this "Birds of Mainland Ecuador", dropped the 'Field Guide' designation and clarified the location, I think I would be up there in the 5 star range. But then I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.I would think they could do the same book more like Garrigues' "Birds of Costa Rica". It would be a much more useful guide.I suppose what one COULD do is slice up the plates and bring them, but then you wouldn't have the distribution maps. That goes against the grain through.

This field guide is OK because there are not other options. It is so big and heavy that it will be a desk reference rather than a functional book to use in the field. It has plates in the middles with numbers rather than names and one has to constantly look back and forth to match them. There are currently no real good options for Ecuador birds. Someone needs to be working on a field guide like The Birds of Costa Rica A Field Guide which is user friendly and can be used in the field. This book needs to cover the birds with half the size and weight and plates changed to the format that modern guides are following.

Whether or not you like this book really depends on how you intend to use it. It is not something that you would want to carry with you into the field, because it is way to cumbersome. It really is much more of a reference book. Two other aspects of how this book is organized and presented also make it impractical for a field guide. The first (and a real pet peeve of mine with many birding books is that plates of birds are in a different section of the book, so your always flipping back and forth between the written descriptions and the plates. The second problem that I have with this book is that there are no real pictures, just plate drawings. I tend to be pretty visual (that's probably why I like birding in the first place), when I received the book I was expecting pictures, not plates, so I was a bit disappointed. Real pictures would have has some redeeming effect on the organization of the book. That being said, as a reference book, it really has just about everything you need or would want to know about all of the species you will likely encounter.

Actually, this is volume 2 of a set of two books. But it is this volume that is meant to be taken to the field. For the first time, there is a full set of very useful color plates for one of the core South American countries. It is certainly a great accomplishment to have all the species pictured in color and on a more or less consistent standard. However, I do not agree with other reviewers who rave about the plates. Too many of the bird pictures have an overall flat appearance, with the color rendition being too simplistic or too bold. And while a good number of the birds are depicted in good or even in unnecessarily large size, others would have benefitted from a larger sized rendition. Just because a species is small does not mean it has to be depicted in a diminutive size, unless there are larger species of the same group on the plate. Thus, while the plates are most useful, it is nevertheless disappointing to see that the overall standard (except for the plates being all in color) is rather lower than what was already published decades ago e.g. in "Birds of Colombia".The book has excellent range maps and very helpful comprehensive texts. However, a somewhat more compact layout would have allowed for a smaller overall size of the book. The way to do it is being demonstrated in the book itself. The texts facing the plates use the suggested compact layout most convincingly. Spanish bird names are given in the main text, but, unfortunately, there is no index for them.(This is an adapted review I originally published in 2002 for the so-called slipcased two-volume edition. As it concerned the fieldguide, but disappeared, here it is again.)

I hate to hack appart this wonderful book, but it is a must. In reality this should be a three volume book. The field guide should look more like a peterson guide. Keep the plates and give me some small range maps in the back. That being said even after hacking it into two parts, it is worth the money. The illustrations and descriptions are accurate and aside from modifying the format there is nothing I would change about it except the much needed addition of an index for the plates would have been helpful. I added my own. Otherwise you have to flip through the bird families; this is time consuming. It is very helpful that there is a map in the very beginning with notable locations and the opposite page has them numbered in the key.Again do not worry about modifying this book in anyway. Hell, I hope to come across someone in my travels who took the time to organize the range maps and put them all right after the plates. I will be impressed. So, just keep half with you in the field and half at your lodgings. You won't be the only one walking around around Ecuador with a glued, stapled, or taped up version of this guide sticking out of your vest pocket. Just give your fellow travelers a nod.

Meditations on Mary

From the Inside Flap

Spiritual meditation is the surest way to grow in holiness, and Our Lady is truly an example of perfection. This combination makes "Meditations on Mary" a spiritual powerhouse that will lift your soul to God and help you along the path to heaven. "Meditations on Mary" features twenty-four of the most powerful and moving meditations written by 17th Century Bishop Jacques-Benigne Bossuet considered to be one of the best homilists in the history of the Church. Author of "Meditations for Lent" and "Meditations for Advent," Bishop Bossuet has been admired for his piety and eloquence for over three hundred years. Now his meditations on Our Lady are available to you in English for the very first time! Although we know Our Lady serves as a perfect example of how a Christian should live and bear witness to Our Lord, Scripture contains only a few glimpses of her life, leaving our knowledge limited and our imagination wanting. In these pages, Bishop Bossuet takes you on a stunning pilgrimage through the principal mysteries of Our Lady's life. He masterfully blends what he's learned from Sacred Scripture with the spiritual traditions rooted in the heart of the Church, and illuminates it with his own theological reflections. He'll bring you to a deeper understanding of Our Lady's compassion, her suffering during Christ's Passion, and the loneliness she felt after his Ascension to heaven. Bishop Bossuet will show you how Jesus brings honor to himself by honoring his mother, and how Our Lady is extraordinary solely because of her alliance with Jesus.

Wow. The author is so very succinct and well written as to pack a wallop in every short chapter on a variety of subjects. This is a wonderful book for a retreat or just for personal meditation and learning on some insights that delighted me as I read them. This is coming from someone who has read probably 30 or 40 books on Mary and Marian teaching including many on the early Fathers and other early writers in the Church.

Very Good!

I love Bossuet! I love these meditations! I have his Lentin meditations as well and love them!!

great

Ok. Not really what I was looking for though.

Meditations on Mary is a 150 page book by Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, author of Meditations for Advent and Meditations for Lent. The first meditation in this book is appropriately entitled "The True Eve." I say appropriately, because the Bible begins with Adam and Eve. In this opening meditation, Bossuet quotes several Church Fathers who compare Eve and Mary. "St. Irenaeus: 'Condemned to death by a virgin, the human race was saved by a Virgin.' Tertullian: ' What was led astray into perdition by this sex was restored to salvation by this sex.' And the incomparable Augustine: 'By a woman, death; by a woman, life. By Eve, ruin; By Mary, salvation.' " Bossuet is quick to point out that Mary's honor does not put her on equal ground with God, but instead she played an important role in salvation history. In other meditations, we get different glimpses of Mary. For example, in one meditation we see that Jesus created Mary for Himself. Jesus is responsible for all of Creation, and He created other people to teach us and instruct us, but Mary was made for Him and she was made pure and innocent because of His love for her. In the meditation "Pierced by a Sword," we learn of Mary's deep sorrow she experienced at Jesus' death. Bossuet poetically explains that, "Only one Cross was required for both her beloved son and herself." This is not to diminish what Christ experienced on the Cross, but to explain the depth of love that a mother feels for her son, that Mary felt for Jesus. As a father, I know what it is to love a child, but I believe there is a special love between mothers and their children. There are twenty-four meditations in all, each around five pages or less. This makes this book the perfect companion for that short span of Ordinary Time between Christmas and Lent. The meditations are poignant and beautiful and serve as a good introduction to the many facets of Mary's life. After reading through this work, you might want to read other great books on Mary, including Behold Your Mother, Little Book of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Meet Mary. All are great books that will surely not disappoint!

So, the title of this book is "Advanced 3D Game Programming With DirectX 10.0", which seems to imply that the text is designed for intermediate/experienced programmers who want to up their skills to the next level. This book isn't really "advanced" at all -- it's an introductory DirectX/game programming book. So, keep that in mind if you're looking to buy this. However, if you're an experienced C++ programmer, but you're a newbie to DirectX game programming, then this book is absolutely perfect. It covers DirectInput -- teaching you the fundamentals for programming input in your game in a very straightforward non-pretentious manner. Direct3D, typically daunting to newbies, is given a very lucid, clear, and succinct treatment. Walsh also covers more advanced topics like scene management (in truth, he glosses over it, so you'll need to do additional reading elsewhere, but it's a good start...), pixel/vertex shaders, and several cool graphics techniques (pre-computed radiosity was especially cool).Walsh also covers the rudiments of network and sound programming, so your game will be "complete".I guess what I like most about this book is that while it's not too in-depth with regard to any topic, it goes over the basics of all necessary game programming topics, so that you can start writing basic games immediately (full games, mind you...not just a flyby through a room of cubes). It's a great fundamentals book that, if you read and understand fully, will allow you to transition relatively painlessly to more advanced books/techniques.While I was tempted to give this book 4 stars for the misleading title, I simply cannot find it within myself to give a book that is so good at what it does lesser than a 5.Oh, and for those of you wondering, "where do I go next after this book?", here's a list of what I'm using as a hobbyist graphics/game programmer...I hope it helps:- The ShaderX series (advanced real-time graphics topics)- GPU Gems series (more advanced, scientific real-time graphics topics)- "3D Game Engine Design" by David Eberly (great book that teaches you how to design a professional quality game engine)- Real-Time Rendering, 2nd edition (all the real-time graphics considerations and algorithmic fundamentals are here)- Game Programming Gems (these are like the ShaderX/GPU Gems, only for general game programming, including math, sound, input, graphics, scene management, etc.)I hope this review helps anybody interested in becoming a game programmer!

I wanted to leave a fair review of this book despite having to update all the source code to Visual Studio 2010. The book encapsulates DX10 very well, and the networking portion was well worth the purchase. You do need to know a good bit of c++ and be comfortable working with templates, classes, pointers, and references. While the end game mentioned is included it is not built in the book as a "work towards this goal", but is something to look forward to still. I would have liked some chapters to go into more detail, but this book isn't a beginners guide so I knew that before making my purchase. Even in 2012 this book can still provide great information, and you are still able to utilize the source code. Just make sure you're comfortable with importing and debugging any issues that VS2010 throws out.The author does provide his email address, not sure if he changed it but he never replied to my questions.

It wold be very interesting to read what Peter would say about DX11 and DX12!

This book is great for those that already know a good bit of c++. If covers a bit of windows programming to get up and running to allow a jump into direct x. I recommend this book for beginners to directx but not beginners to c++. Beginners to c++ will just get frustrated so get a c++ book first, read it, write some code, then check out this book. It's really annoying that I've spent a good 3-4 hours thus far troubleshooting the code that is available for download and I still can get it up and running. :(

This book explains every part of directX10 and even helps you make a small game engine. Great code encapsulation using classes and catching errors. One needs to know pretty well C++ to understand all the things explained and used.

I have read Peter Walsh's other book about Direct X 9.0 called "The Zen of Direct X Programming" (or something like that) Anyway, that was way better. Actually the previous book mentioned was awesome, that is why I bought the "Advanced version" except the "Advanced version" is by a different publisher who probably said to Peter... "Don't be funny in your book, be boring, don't explain things, anything you do explain, explain it poorly and don't give any good examples." And that is the book for you.

So far I'm over half way through the book page 280. Its been non stop theory, math, and code snippets for UDP code. Nothing fun has happened this whole time, hard as hell to not burn this book in frustration. I have read several book on making games all of which made it fun with little projects and things but this book just dumps tons of theory and code snippets at you and that's it. The only thing that could save this book is a decent project at the end that uses this theory nicely, and then I'll go back and review other wise its just a boring mess of complicated code. Also the author of this book proudly proclaims to be a well know game programmer. Looking at his list of games hes worked on they are either not notable or were complete fail. A.P.B the MMO was shut down 3 months after launch cause it was terrible no one liked it (they thought it would out sell GTA4 LOL). Considered the biggest fail in modern game history. Medal of honor rising sun was so bad that it nearly killed the medal of honor series. The rest on his list are games I've never heard of and I check game news several times a day.Anyway back on subject, even though this book is written terribly I do think that there is good info inside these dull pages. I'll give it 3 stars so far on the hope that the end projects will be fun and informative. I'll edit this one or do another review after I suffer through the rest of this book.
