Thomas's books are intriguing and moving. They may be particularly touching for those looking towards a lay or missionary life. Thomas Merton continued to follow God's will within the walls of solitude and prayer even though he did not understand it. He was inspired by the life of the Carthusian & Cistercian Orders who follow the Rule of St. Benedict ~ however more strict in their interactions even with each other unless it is work related. He had a beautiful soul and doesn't just ramble as one would may expect in a journal type book.

A clear unedited view into Merton's contemplative life, as silence and solitude envelope him. I found "A Search" a invitation to journey with Fr. Lewis into his day to day, and even hour by hour inner dialogue with God. At times, I could not put the text aside; other times I had to enter into my own search. Far less polished in tone and writing style than Seven Story Mountain. Equally engaging as are all of Merton's texts.

A great window into the mind of Merton during this period of his life.
