I disliked the artsy writing style and the long blow-by-blow accounts of some of the pool contests . This book gets five stars because it more than makes up for those shortcomings with its amazing stories of gambling, cheating and near violence . Pool should be a game played in clean, modern halls by gentlemen . Yes, but that isn't the case for this author as he hits the road to back a hustler and risk a lot of money . There outta be a movie made outta this !

Having found this book in a WSJ review on the top 5 gambling books, I elected to order. I had spent two high school years in "small town america" in the 60's, where one of the major local activities was "Drew's pool hall". Looking back, I see alot of similarities in McCumber's book. The "stale cigar smoke, the stale aspirations of old men,the rebellious 8th graders slouched eating slim jims"....and the 9 ball table at the front near the bar where all the real action was.What other game gives you colorfull names like Bucktooth (the "Tooth"), Kamikazie Bob, Waterdog, among many others?McCumber takes us on a whirlwind tour of the U.S. and Canada with one pool player (hustler?) and one money staker, McCumber himself. The locations and pool games are timeless and one has to wonder if this tradition continues today.

Tony Annigoni - house pro and part owner of the Q-Club in San Francisco. David McCumber - pool devotee and writer with some money to spare. These two go on the road across North America hustling games and looking for action. Annigoni plays and generally wins. McCumber bankrolls his bets and sweats on the sidelines taking the notes that turned into this book. McCumber's writing is strong, sometimes a bit too Hunter Thompsonish, but he loves the game and has a visceral sense of humor about the odyssey that could cost him a bundle. Annigoni is a great player, but the opponents are world class and life on the road in cheap hotels, late trains, and all night pool halls is a tiring exercise. This is a good book. Those who play a little pool will enjoy the tense action and will be able to follow the games closely. Those who just enjoy a book about a little-known facet of America's underbelly will be swept along. Those who liked "The Color of Money" will appreciate the reality check.

the guy is kinda a rat and self-promoter too, but some stuff is interesting, though maybe not exactly true.

I found the book to be really a quality read. I am a big pool player at heart so I am biased for sure but it was a great collection of stories. The author does a fantastic job of describing people and places throughout the book. Definitely worth reading!

I just read it again--for the third time and I still found myself laughing out loud at McCumbers dead on the money descriptions of high level pool hustling. The players he describes are authentic, anyone who has met Keith McCready or Bucktooth can vouch for that, and that is what makes this book so entertaining, that it is an authentic glimpse of big time pool gambling. If you would like to see this in real life, just go to Louisville Kentucky during the first few weeks of January every year and check out the Derby City Classic tournament.

I love this cover out of all the others this series has! The second part of the series broke my heart but this one broke it even more, I mean I'm glad that Avery is finally starting to come out of her shell and say how she feels and half the time I want to kill Sean for being an ass but then the times he is playful you can't help but love him to pieces, "If I'm bludgeoned by a piggy kite and lose my mind, you have to promise to tell people that I was done in by something much more manly." When Avery halls the balls to actually admit how she feels about him and Sean's reaction it practically killed me I mean who the hell would have the guts to say something like this to a guy, "It doesn't matter what you do or what you say, I'm desperately afraid of you, Sean. Everything about you seems to bring me back to life. You're voice, your words, your face...I can't think when you're there and when you're gone, it's worse." It really does take a lot to say how you feel but let me tell you what I wouldn't have handled it the way Avery did I would have gone wild. The way this part of the series ended I need and i mean NEED the next part ASAP!

This series caught my attention because of the title. I had just finished reading My Nights With Kate (Jack Ryker) which was a very steamy story that started out as an arrangement as well. In this book, several similar elements surrounding Sean come into play, but he is a much darker character which results in incredible mood swings. This is definitely a bi-polar version of Kate's story, but I must say the author does a good job of leaving you hanging and needing to see what happens next!This installment is quite a day in the life of Avery and Sean. Avery starts out devastated, having the worst day of her life. Then at about the 25% mark, things turn around and it suddenly becomes one of the best days of her life. However, by the time they have lunch she is back on the downward slide into incredible despair. The fact that she made bi-polar burgers for lunch lets us know that the author knows exactly what she's doing. By the time the day comes to an end more is revealed about the brooding, volatile Sean and it leaves us wondering... now what? I'm betting on more angst and roller coasters.Some readers don't like the fact that each book is a short story as it breaks up the reading experience. However, I look at it as being similar to a TV series where you are left hanging each week and have to tune in next time to see what happens. H.M. Ward does a good job of building tension and curiosity, so as long as each book remains consistent in quality I have no problem with it. The only thing is, with everyone investing a significant amount of time and money in the series, there better be a spectacular ending somewhere down the line!

As Avery & Sean's time together progresses, Avery has an incredibly difficult time separating feelings from Sean & it just being sex as a business transaction. After a chance meeting in the cemetery where Avery's parents are buried, she finds out about one of Sean's secrets. With this new revelation & an intense intimate encounter, Avery feels that her feelings for this messed up man must be mutual. When Avery returns to the dorm Mel confronts her & makes sure she understands that she cannot fall for Sean & that it is just sex. Nothing more, Nothing less. With new determination later that evening Avery decides to follow Mel's advice. But in doing so she learns more about Sean than she ever bargained for & is left with her life spin out of control one more time.These shorts stories are both full of humor & intense emotions. Just when things feel good, Avery is smacked to ground one more time. Will she be able to do what needs to be done in order to survive?

This is one of my favorite serials ever. It’s sexy, sassy, funny and dark.This serial belongs to the dark and brooding Sean Ferro. He’s the first Ferro I was introduced to, and he holds a piece of my heart. As the series start out, Sean is very mysterious, and to be honest – 15 volumes in (when I’m writing this review), he still is a bit of an enigma. There is still a lot to be learned. He’s a dark SOB, this one. He’s got his fetishes, but holy wow is he delicious. And scary. Seriously, I love him – but if I had known him IRL I would have been scared s***less, and kept my distance.Then we have Avery. This girl’s got some spunk. I mean she has to, given that Sean is her love interest. She’s a struggling student when we first meet her, and when her best friend, Mel, realizes this, she reveals what her REAL job is. She’s a high dollar call girl. Ms. Black latches on to Avery immediately, and if Avery just takes one client, it could solve all her problems. She only has to say yes. Problem is she only wants one guy, Sean. Enter: a s***load of trouble.“I’m rewarded, uh, I mean punished, with a slap to my backside.” - AveryThis is an erotic romance, and you can expect some mighty steamy scenes. Some of the volumes more so than others, because there is a hell of a lot going on in this series. The Arrangement, and Sean basically, was the catalyst for all the other books from this same world. Sean has made an appearance is in every spin-off so far. So this is obviously a great place to start if you are curious about H.M. Ward’s books. Just remember to start at the beginning. You would not understand half of what’s going on if you jumped into it halfway through.It’s important to note that this is a fan driven series. Essentially that means that as long as the fans want more, there will be more. And I honestly can’t picture the day we won’t want more. So if that is not for you, I recommend you go pick up something else, because this story has been going on for a good while now, and I certainly hope it will go on for a long time to come – as long as Holly wants it to.Another important note is that these are split up in volumes, and each one end on a cliffhanger (Holly is the queen of cliffhangers). It’s nerve-wracking every time. And it is one of the tings that keep it just as exciting as it was in the beginning. As well as the fact that they’re always fast paced, and it never gets boring. Each volume starts off exactly where the last one left off. I always like to re-read the latest volume before the next one releases because you really get thrown right back into the action without any recaps. Cute little board book, very substantial. The story is written to the "tune" of "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Purchased for an almost 2-yr-old, and an almost 3-yr-old.

Purchased this for my 2 year olds Easter basket. She loves reading the book. It can be sung to the tune of itsy bitsy spider, which she loves. Cute illustrations and durable board book format to boot.

These books are great for little hands. My grandson is 2 and he loves to read each one for every season and holiday we can get and this one just like the others did not disappoint. I have 3 more grandbabies on the way and I have complete confidence that all the grandbabies will love them.

The story is very sweet (full of friends helping each other) and the illustrations are sweet and charming. I bought this for my son's first Easter basket. He was 9 months old at Easter. The illustrations were bright and happy enough to capture his attention and the story we very baby Easter appropriate (without being too girly or too old for him).

I have 3 daycare children who are from 15 months to 19 months and they all love the book and love to be read to. Parents were very happy with my choice.

Another Itsy Bitsy winner! I have been reading this book to my 2 year old every night (by his request). The Itsy Bitsy Spider is one of his favorite songs so he loves the Itsy Bitsy stories being sung to him at night. We own the Itsy Bitsy Reindeer and he was a huge fan of that book too. The Itsy Bitsy Bunny book incorporates some Easter essentials (baskets, bunnies, candy, etc.) and also includes a part about the Bunny's friends helping him when he needs a hand. This is a happy, colorful book and has quickly become a springtime favorite.

It's a cute book that goes along with the song 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider'. It's easy to sing along, until you get to the last page and the words don't really match up with the tune. Other than that, it was a perfect book for my son's Easter basket!

Greg LeRoy explains in detail how corporations get tax breaks and related fiscal incentives to relocate or build in predominantly suburban or rural areas. One major ill-effect of that process is lower funding for infrastructure and schools.Sprawl is another adverse side effect.Mr. LeRoy descibes the competition between states and cities for businesses.He detailed how Sykes scammed states and cities to get subsidies for call centers that they would close after short periods of time while outsourcing call center work overseas. They took the money and ran.The author also offers insight on:+ A critical, but helpful analysis of Single Sales Factor(SSF). How it works and what the major flaws are with it.+ One of the lures of exporting jobs and income to foreign nations- businesses pay little or no income tax to state or federal governments. Corporations also hide income made in specific states through loopholes.+ Explains the concepts of "Nowhere Income" and the "Delaware Holding Company Loophole".+ The "demalling" of America as big box retailers reap the rewards of large incentives. The author poses this question on that issue. "Why are we paying to kill downtowns and shutter malls and susidize companies through the back door for their poverty wages?""When we say no to WalMart Supercenters, we protect our Main Street merchants and the community life they foster. Thomas Jayne was trained as a graduate fellow in the prestigious Winterthur program, as well as other leading museums. This book is fantastic. It has great photos and all of the photo descriptions are on the same page as what is shown. You don't have to keep flipping back and forth between text and the pictures of the elegant rooms. I like the way the author has showcased the historic homes, especially Monticello. It was considered genius in its day, and is still so considered. My design sense leans toward traditional/eclectic, with a twist of contemporary art. So I am happy that he included many rooms that are traditionally designed and ones that include family photos and the owners' personal possessions. I truly hope the author has other books "in the works," and I would like to see more photos of his own design work.

The book is very nice and the rooms chosen are beautiful. The photography is beautiful. However this is one expert opinion. For example I find it hard to believe that not one room in the White House would be chosen by the author. That being said I wonder how many other rooms could be considered the "Finest". Perhaps a team of several designers, architects and decorators could have collaborated as coauthors to compile a fairer selection. Some rooms depicted would likely still make the grade but there would be others considered finer than those illustrated.

Quite disappointing. Considering how many beautiful homes there are in America this is quite a miserable choice.

The author's words are both democratic and provocative.The reader will become involved with this book firstly curious to see which rooms are chosen then wondering how and why they were chosen and ultimately understanding what makes a room fine, wonderful, etc. Do we agree with the author or disagree with his choices? 50 is just a number. The real take away will be your own enriched ideas for quality, proportions, style, design, livability. The book is the author's invitation to go on this intellectual journey. His creative process is contagious. Of course, it can be easier to look back historically and all agree on what has staying power and remains pleasing to most but, challenging to assign that same title to rooms made in our lifetime. The 50 rooms reveal the author's bold goal realized and invite us to ponder number 51, 52, etc, as well as our own rooms. "The Finest..." provides beautiful food for thought.Mindy Papp Durham
