I've been teaching writing in college and graduate school for about 15 years, including two years in a writing department. I know that my University's teaching center recommends this book, so I decided to take a look at it. Bean helped me step back and take a fresh look at how to connect my writing assignments with the thinking that I want my students to do. After reading this book, I have been experimenting this semester with having the students do more thinking exercises before they actually write their papers.In emphasizing the value of thinking before writing, I have shared with several of my students the section in chapter 2 about the French concept of brouillon ("something deliberately scrambled, something placed in disorder, something that must be wrestled into form").This thought-provoking book should prompt all professors to review their methods for provoking thought....

I’ve read at least 15 highly regarded books on college teaching. This one is significantly better than all the rest of them.Each chapter helped me understand why certain things are difficult for students and offered effective solutions that have been fairly easy to implement.Here are a few things I’ve learned from this book that have made a very meaningful difference in my teaching:* why students don’t do the reading and how to help them learn to read difficult texts* why frequent, short, informal writing helps students learn better and specific ideas for implementing it with little to no effort on my part* why 2 or 3 short papers, staggered throughout the semester, is WAY better than a longer paper due at the end of the semester* Why you should give students the opportunity to revise their paper (to address your written feedback) for a higher grade* how to give written feedback on student papers that students will actually read and learn from.As you might have guessed, most of this involves writing. I learned from this book two really valuable things about teaching with writing. First, adding written assignments (even just short, informal ones) to your arsenal of teaching pedagogies is a very effective way to help them learn content.Second, a year of freshman comp is simply not enough writing instruction for most students, and learning how to write well in college is extremely important. Therefore, it is really every professor’s responsibility to help students improve their writing skills.This book shows us why and how to do that, without adding much to our already too high workload.Are you a department chair? Buy a copy for each faculty member in your department. Have a monthly lunch at which you discuss 2 chapters from this book. This will improve the quality of teaching in your department.

Using the ideas in this book transformed my classroom. I teach adults in a vocational program. Most have little time for homework, but I started assigning weekly written assignments following the suggestions. Bingo! Students became more active in class and were prepared for discussions. While they didn't enjoy the papers, they all felt the papers were extremely valuable in their learning. I continue to refer to this book when planning a class or assignment. It's not a one-time read although you could easily read it straight through.

This is the best single book out there on teaching writing and critical thinking -- and the second edition is a significant revision, expansion, and updating of the first, without losing the balance of clearly articulated principles and multiple practical examples of the first edition.If you love your current first edition, you should at least borrow a copy of the second from your library or teaching center to see the expanded sections on teaching students to write in multiple genres, supporting undergraduate researchers, and anchoring writing in particular disciplinary contexts. This is not a chintzy "I updated a few references and added some new stories" second edition: every chapter is rewritten to better prepare teachers for writing and thinking instruction in classes across the disciplines.I use this book as a cornerstone of my composition pedagogy course, recommend it to all my colleagues, and always find something useful when I re-read it myself.

I was sceptical but had to read this for a workshop. The book converted me completely. Since then I've bought it for colleagues, gone back to it many times, and used it to change the way I teach--especially the way I teach writing. Best of all, it's evidence-based but flexible; it gives more than one side of an issue. (E.g., it gives the arguments and evidence both for and against essay exams.) It gives lots of examples and suggests many ways of doing things (e.g., LOTS of kinds of rubrics, and the strengths and weaknesses of each). I keep going back to this book, though I wish I had more time to use it.

Are you an instructor? If you answered "yes" to that question, then you must buy this book. Even if your expertise is not in composition or English, this will help you craft new assignments or activities to help your students do some critical thinking.

Dr. Bean has some terrific ideas for meaningful teaching. This book is worth every penny. Ideas about how to help students learn to think critically through writing and reading are enriching for every educator.

Very easy to read and apply ideas. I was hoping more in the beginning on what critical thinking entails (i.e. Facets of rhetorical problem solving), but this is still a good book to read before implementing any composition course pedagogy.

The title was a good catch.If the reader has no fighting or martial arts experience, it is probably acceptable. I thought it would open my eyes to a whole new realm of techniques and weapons. However, the more I read, the more I got bored with the book. It does cover some useful techniques but it doesn't justify the price of the book.

After reading a few entries, I had to make sure this wasn't written by Dave Barry. Remove the bristles from your toothbrush and blow them in the assailant's eyes, blinding him? Got a rubber band? Shoot him in the eye with it. Wet the end of a towel, twist the end and pop it at his eye.I think the outrageous outnumbers the practical.

Terrible, terrible, terrible. This might have some use if you were stranded in the backwoods or desert island but to use in an impromptu situation to defend yourself....???? One suggestion had you taping something to a pipe. Yep, I could see you telling the attacker "Hey, would you just wait there a minute while I do this?" Some interesting suggestions but not for spur of the moment, which is the impression that the book gives is its mission.

If you doubt that almost anything can be used as a weapon this book will make a believer out of you. You can also think of it as a paranoid's bathroom reader.

Well, I was under the impression I’d be getting some actual useful advice but this book seems more like a parody or something from an episode of TV’s, “The Fall Guy”.

Funny look at how to use everyday items like toilet paper as a weapon!

Many of the objects the author suggests you use for self defense seem to me as though they would be ineffective in a fight.

Not a bad read but pretty soon you feel like your reading the same thing over and over. Author does have some pearls.

While this does have a few unique ideas (dirty diaper, dog poo bag), it largely recommends smashing the attacker with whatever item you're holding.... and occasionally trying to set them on fire. I really don't think the authors tried on any of these ideas in a training format, let alone a "live" format....

The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Vedic philology most of the points will go over a typical reader's head. There's also BAP's Nietzschean outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Japanese nationalist literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these arguments, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. When choosing a math workbook, I’m usually looking for one simple thing: each topic is represented by a large amount of exercises.The “large” is extremely important as in math, like in many other fields of study, “repetition is the path to mastery”.Having tried numerous books, I can definitely say that this one (actually these two Part I and Part II) deserves a place on my table.The book is well organized and covers all material required for the 3rd grade Common Core.The multiple choice questions (Part I) contain fairly large amount of word problems, which is big part of CC,and the free response part (Part II) does have some challenging questions.What I like the most is its reasonably-sized daily exercises, which, if done daily, definitely improve results.

Disappointed with this math workbook. Had plenty of great reviews, however we have been working in the book and many problems are not numbered correctly making it confusing and difficult to use and grade. Much better resources that have no errors out there for similar price. Wish I could return but didn't notice until we started writing in it. It is obvious that no time was put into the final product and the editing process. Many of these errors were caught by an 8 year old.

About one month ago I ordered four math books published by Argo Brothers Publishing – Math 3rd Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2), and Math 5th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2). Being a Math Tutor I always check different additional sources to help my students to be successful on the tests, especially based on Common Core. Usually I search Internet looking for Test Preparation information, and then compiling worksheets for different topics. It is hard work, because there is a lot of outdated information with different point of view on the same subject. I found almost everything I need in those books! Part 1 has a hundreds multiple choice questions which cover different topics, and Part 2 requires writing answers, which is much harder, and makes a student to analyze, and formulate his answer in proper way. Guessing doesn’t work! All the books are well structured based by days and weeks, which can help with the planning of studying. I started to utilize those books in my tutoring process, and I’m very happy with the result – it saves my time and effort, and I have big source of worksheets wit the answer keys in one place! I would recommend those books to parents of my students as a perfect guide to be successful on Common Core exams. I’d like to order the book Math 7th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2) in near future.

The only reason I didn't give this workbook an additional star is that the videos that are offered with the book are lacking, I like the book itself and the format. If your child wants help with one of the questions and wants help from someone other than the parent or teacher, the video may or may not teach the math concept behind the problem. Some of the questions on the video are just someone reading the problem and the answer with no explanation. Overall I like the book though and would recommend it.

One of my favorite publishers for math workbooks for students. I have many of their books and have been consistently pleased with the quality and number of resources they provide. The workbooks include more than enough practice problems for your child to work through during the school year and the book comes along with their online website access. To my knowledge, all of their workbooks come with video explanations on their website. Some instructor reviews question by question making this an essential workbook to have for all parents and teachers. As a parent who has used their books for my kids and continue to do so, I highly recommend this brand.

The book is ok for getting use to this style of learning and test taking. However, there have been a couple of times where the answers given (in the back of the book for each lesson) were wrong. Hopefully, parents know Math concepts themselves. Lol

I ordered the book to be able to work with my child to assure competency for Common Core Math. The book has a page worth of practice problems with assignments per each weekday. There are also tips for kids on all the pages and answers in the back. I like this book as the organization makes it easy to use and the practice problems provide really good practice in understanding common core. This book allows me to save money on tutoring. Great resource if your child needs extra practice to figure out the concepts.

Got this recently for my third grader to supplement with extra math practice at home and he has actually said that he really likes it! In math, as with many things, practice is really important to solidify understanding of various concepts. Very happy with the 3rd grade books.

My three year old is both terrified and obsessed with this story! Bill Peet is one of my all time favorites, and slowly but surely I am trying to collect them all. I bought this one for my 8 year old, but it is the little guys who loves it. Something about that Owl-Eyed Ogre.....he is totally captivated. He is the type of child to ask me to read book after book, but rarely the same one again right away, but this one he BEGS me to read again as soon as it is done. He covers his eyes with his blankey when the scary parts come up, peeking just enough. I can't help myself from emphasizing the really dramatic parts, just to really get him going! Bill Peet is obviously a gifted man who understands children and writes books that are easy and fun to read. I wonder if he read his books out loud before finalizing them?? They are all so well written, whether in rhyme or not(this one is not), and have such a natural flow to them. They are easy to get into, and just such a pleasure to read. After refusing to read this one out loud AGAIN last night, my son picked out a new popular book, "Dragons Love Tacos," which I really don't care for to begin with, but as a follow up to Peet's Clyde, it really looked and sounded lame and downright pathetic! It really made me appreciate this book even more! There are plenty of cute, catchy popular new books on the market, and don't get me wrong we do have and love many of them, but there is something about a classic tale like this, moral and eloquent as all Peet's books are, full of magic and wonder. Like a modern but timeless fairytale....complete with silly sound effects:)

Bill Peet is one of my favorite kids book authors. I read these as a kid, got them for my kids, nieces and nephews and have put away a set for for my grandchildren someday. The stories and characters are always well designed and draw kids in. The illustrations are bright and colorful while still being somewhat simplistic giving them a lovable cartoon appearance. The stories have great moral and life lessons told in a fun way. These stories have stood the test of time and have been loved by many in my family

as a grandmother, i have owned this book - now three times. my children loved it so much that my son took it to college with him to always feel the happiness we had when reading it together. i still own a copy and just bought a book for my grandson. i have a picture on my wall of my daughter reading it to my grandson. he frequently says :kerpuffle when things go the way he wants them to. it is a wonderful story of overcoming things that you may not know you can do and then find out then you certainly can! great fantasy and learning book!

Sir Galavant, the dim-witted noodle head (his words, not mine), is so gung-ho on finding a horrible ogre to defeat, that when he does find one he races in without a thought. Clyde, his noble and also fearful steed, sees the foolishness in this but won’t be able to do a thing about it unless he can work up the courage and act… or at least just act. Kids may learn, in this story, that behaving bravely is maybe just about as good as being brave. All my kids love this story and I don’t mind reading it, for the lesson and for the fun.

Bill Peet has been a family favorite author since 1978. I read them to my son in the 70's. Bought every one I could find for my grandchildren, and now am purchasing for that same son's newly arrived twin boys. I recently asked my first three grandchildren if they still had their Bill Peet books and discovered that they plan to NEVER (said emphatically) get rid of them. In addition, they are still read because they take them on babysitting jobs to read to their charges who also LOVE them.

This is a great story about facing one's fears and being brave for the sake of a friend. It's one of my 7-year-old grandson's favorites. The illustrations are cute, too.

My grandsons love hearing this story read to them every time they visit. Good lesson on having courage even when you're not feelin' it.

This was perhaps my favourite book before third grade, and it is my son's first pick also. I hope more kids get to read it. Bill Peet books all typically have a good morale built into clever verbiage.

We received this book as part of a monthly Kid's book box subscription. While often the books included are a bit off beat, this one was just a retelling of the 5 monkeys in the tree rhyme. But somehow, the artwork, and the frame story that was placed onto the rhyme made this not fun to read. Often the kid (12 months at the time of receipt) just closed the book while I was reading it to him, and then wandered away. We took this copy to the local "little free library" in our neighborhood, hoping another child may enjoy it.

Mediocre baby book. The story is fine, illustrations are vibrant, but the text is too repetitive. And it's unclear how the monkeys always seem to escape the crocodile.

This is a fun companion to my son’s favorite song, “No More Monkey’s Jumping On The Bed.” It actually reads in a way that is appropriate for bedtime.

We purchased this book because of the similarity between this and the little song our son sings at daycare. He'll often yell "SNAP" loudly and anticipates the page with the alligator on it! Very entertaining book for little ones!

This one's cute. Used to have a book of the monkeys on the bed with a button you'd push and it would play the song... I think this reminds my son of that. I like to read this with and old eyeglass case in hand so when the alligator snaps I can kind of bring it to life.

My two year old had inherited this book from his older brothers so it was a little beat up. He loves the crocodile and says snap with the book. I ordered this one for Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a larger than the typical board book. I am thrilled with the size at the price!

My grandson loves getting his box every 3 months. I wanted to expose him early to reading

my daughter (who is 6 years old ) loves these books bought the whole series. We read each one every night
