Okay, the first 30% of the book was a little boring. I was constantly peeking ahead, wondering when Kaladin's and Dalinar's storyline would return (got a little tired of Shallan in the beginning there, and Szeth had too much explanation of the magic going on...yes, I understand what a Lashing is the first time you say it...), and getting a little wary of the flashbacks.But the last two-thirds? Amazing. I literally could not stop reading until I finished it. It sucked me in. Granted, at times, the characters could be a little one-dimensional (particularly a good percentage of the Bridge 4 crew; I felt like he was attempting to develop them more than what actually came across in the reading). Still, I was never dissatisfied.I am getting a little tired of Brandon's method of making a female character: start with a sharp tongue, strong intellect and add in some fanciful, mysterious trait, and bam. Seems like the only women that weren't like this were mentioned fleetingly (like Dalinar's wife). All others were always vixens of some sort...pretty, witty and dangerous. I got more than my share of that in Elantris and Mistborn. Also, I kind of feel like he struggles with romance...but I appreciate the fact that he doesn't make sex and lust a huge part of his stories.But ah! Don't take that as criticism on this book. It was a minor annoyance. I rarely get sucked into fantasy, because I find it so tedious, but Brandon's plain prose is oddly refreshing. It's nice to turn off my brain and let him show me the story and immerse myself completely.Please, please try this book. It's not for everyone, but if you are remotely a fan of the genre, you should check it out. His worlds, magic systems and mysteries are fabulous. I am hooked. I'll be buying the next one when it comes out, as soon as it comes out.

Brandon Sanderson is quickly becoming my favorite author. I grew up with Tolkein, Asimov, Herbert, and other gifted writers. Though I was young and didn't understand everything on the page, the stories came alive for me. I was also a huge fan of Orson Scott Card in high school, and the past 15 years of George RR Martin.In my opinion Brandon Sanderson might just beat them all. I know that will be taken as blasphemous and borderline heresy, because Tolkein and Asimov are considered two of the greatest writers of all time. Just hear me out as to why I think Sanderson has something special with this series.The Way of Kings is the first in a planned 10 book series in the Stormlight Archive. These 10 books take place on a planet called Roshar, a planet with a unique and rich history. While humans are present, the world is very different than our own. The world is a very unforgiving place, with hurricane level storms traveling across the world every couple of weeks, giant crab like crustaceans roaming the world, and trees and other plant life have evolved a rock-like resilience to the elements.Right away you can see that this differs from the more traditional fantasy worlds of other authors. As if this isn't interesting enough, Sanderson goes one step further and introduces a magic system that hasn't been seen before. I won't go into detail because I don't want to spoil it, but the discovery of this "magic" (if it can be called that) is both interesting and refreshing.Though this book and presumably all books in the Stormlight Archive will take place on the planet Roshar, Brandon Sanderson has done something even more ambitious with his books than other authors have attempted in the past. He has other series, such as Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker, etc that take place IN THE SAME UNIVERSE. Though these books take place in the same universe they take place on different planets, with different magic systems on each. How are there different magic systems? Well there is an explanation, (a really good one I might add) but for it to make sense, you really need to read the books. Do you have to have read one series first to enjoy another series? Absolutely not! That said, if you HAVE read some of the other books, there are numerous "Easter Eggs" that you will discover in some of the books that will make you smile.There is an over-arching plot between all of the books in each of Sanderson's series in the Cosmere Universe, but that plot is still in its infancy. Sanderson has said he knows his end game, and thankfully he is a very fast writer. It is amazing to me that Sanderson can write so quickly and yet so well at the same time. The character development each of the characters experiences is amazing. Each is well written, and even though I get annoyed at some of the decisions the characters make, I am not annoyed at the WRITING of those characters. The characters don't always make the best decisions, because Sanderson writes them as humans, and humans make mistakes. There are twists in the books that would rate very highly on the M. Night Shamalayan scale. There are very few books that have made me tear up as if someone cut an onion in the room, but for some reason this book (as well as Words of Radiance and Oathbringer) has made me do so.Do yourself a favor and buy this book. There's humor, romance, comedy, drama, and best of all, GOOD WRITING.

The title says it all. I. Became. Obsessed. Oh, you think I'm kidding? Let me explain. I bought the physical copy of this book due to a suggestion from a friend after finishing all of the Song of Ice and Fire novels (that are currently out). I started to read the first part of the book with the Heralds and then the second first part of the book with Szeth..and I couldn't get into it. The magic didn't make sense, the fighting was weird, I just couldn't get into it...but I pushed on.I started to read about Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Syl, and Jasnah. I started to learn more about them, more about what was driving them, who they were, what they were about, what was going on with them, and it's like I've said before, I became obsessed. I HAD to know more. I took the book with me, everywhere that I went, picking it up and reading a few pages during small bits of spare time. I would think about it driving to work, the magic system, what was happening with the characters, what was happening with the world all popped into my head at weird times. I started to miss the book while driving so I bought the audible version of the book, even though I hated Michael Kramer at first (he gets better the more you listen). I bought the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to lug around my physical copy anymore...and so I could read on my web browser in between patients at work. When the physical copy got destroyed by my 2 year old daughter, I went and bought the book for the 4th time!What I'm trying to point out is that the book is THAT good. Good enough to purchase it 4 times on 3 different mediums. The world is incredibly well built, the characters are well thought out and they truly become your friends, you root for the invite everything that they do, other characters you will hate, love, and hate again. Sanderson is that good. The magic system is so convoluted and hard to grasp, there is so much to it, it truly is a wonder and really amazes me.that somebody could think this all up and keep it all straight while writing it.Please, if you haven't given this book a chance, do. I promise it is worth every single penny.

I'm so glad I read this book. It's one of those books you start reading without knowing the first thing about and ends up surprising you.I think this is what I'd call a cozy read, I really wanted to get inside the book and snuggle up with the characters. They were so warm, and sweet, and real, and beautiful and strong.This is a book about life, finding your place in the world, and being grateful for every single thing you have, even when it feels like it's not enough, because that's what life is about.I think that after you finish this book, you too will be very glad you read it.

Wonderful book with realistic characters, accurate history that's brought vividly to life, and a fascinating look at a very plausible near future. There are so many interesting elements to this story - climate change, past and future; the lingering affects of war and grief; society's ability to adapt and change; the unexpected ways humans make emotional connections; the lifespan of a tortoise; the hope of a colony on another planet.The space program operating from Wichita, Kansas. Love that so much. Yes, I once lived there.This story was compelling and I loved every bit of it.

This book was such a joy to read. It’s marketed as young adult, but I’m a 35yr old man, and I loved it. The three timelines are all interesting in their own way, and even though there’s not a ton of action, I found it to be a page turner solely based on how you keep wanting to get to know the characters better. I’ve never read a book quite like this one, and I look forward to more from this author.

I chose a four star because I enjoyed the characters and the story but I wanted a little more. I like endings with things tied up, the not knowing what happened to certain characters leaves me a little sad. The over all story pulled me in made the characters come alive in all the generations! I would recommend to readers who like multigenerational stories.

I loved this book. I loved the formatting, the reading of the letters. The way time was weaved through the characters. The puzzle that Adri figured out and the outcomes. The characters felt real and their stories were mesmerizing. And I love Galapagos.I give Midnight at the Electric 5 stars for its great read.I would recommend this book to everyone.

This is a very beautiful story told through letters from 3 different generations, taking place during 3 very different times and places and although it might seem weird at first, it leaves a warm feeling of connection through time and space. This was my first book by this author and the way she interconnected the stories is very smart and thoughtful. I am glad I picked this one up.

Beautiful story of different lives from different times and places melding together in unexpected ways as the plot progresses. The ending leaves you thinking and wondering about the characters, but not frustrated that it isn't all spelled out - probably my favorite finish to a story.

I had no idea what to expect when I chose this book from a Kindle deal, but I was completely satisfied with the story. It spanned across oceans and time with interwoven stories that kept me wanting to read to its conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The author explains the court reports before and after exposing them to provide background information. She uses language that is understandable for the common layman to comprehend. Photos are included throughout this book.Keep in mind that this is a memoir, which is considered literary nonfiction. So, there are moments when she does recount her thoughts and feelings during this time. Ocasionally, she will discuss her life in Germany while working as a young reporter; this adds to the setting during this time since her and other reporters had no warm running water etc...as a result of the war.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the facts during the Holocaust, specifically the atrosities committed by Nazi doctors to innocent civilians in Germany.

None expressed remorse.The entire Nuremberg trials targeted only the most serious offenders. There were many more medical personnel involved in crimes against humanity, beginning with the mass extermination of disabled Germans. I've always been very disturbed by the decision to not prosecute more people.I don't believe any of the doctors who experimented on prisoners in Japanese POW camps were ever prosecuted, and Japan did begin to publicly admit and apologize for its war crimes until the 21st century.Turkey continues to deny the Armenian genocide. I cannot respect a nation until there has been a full public admission and apology.

This book truly opened my eyes to the horrors endured .How tragic that so many innocent people were literally slaughtered for experiments . That were seen as essential.How disgusting that men and women swore to upheld the oath of healing could with help of the SS , and think nothing of torturing in the name of science,.I was deeply saddened by the truth and horrors that mankind can inflict with no remorse or guilt., such unimaginable cruelty.

Intense. Not for the average reader. I am an adult, and I had nightmares about this book. Make sure you're ready for it, if you chose to buy it. I had no idea that this happened. I'm not sorry I read it because it brought the Holocaust to light for me. We should probably all know that this really happened.

This book, is a difficult must read. Written incredibly well and structurally perfect it leads the reader through the darkest of events. Each experiment seemingly more atrocious with every section. And while it was so hard to read, that is a compelling reason why it must be.

Written from the perspective of a female court reporter during the “doctors trial” in Nuremberg she proceeds to tell what transpired during the trial as well as what what said and talked about on the stand informative and entertaining my only dislike is at some points and (not for very long) she gets a little off subject and talks about her personal experiences during the course of the trial which to me personally is side tracking but all in all a good book if you are interested in the subject matter

Overall, it is a good book for middle and high school students as well as non-native English speakers. There is not enough material to fully prepare students for the exams/tests, but it will certainly improve the vocabulary and teach some expressions Here are the pros and cons of the book.Pros:- I liked the structure of the book. The lessons are divided by weeks and days. So, if a student is determined to study every day, the books will support his/her goal.- The new words are great. The authors actually focus on teaching the words that are not widely used. Here are some examples: "benevolent", "tenacious", "viable", "introspective", "omnivorous", "saturate", "complicity", etc.- There are sample sentences with blank spaces, where a learner is offered to place the new words.- Every lesson also has a section called "Todays' Idiom" with an explanation and a sample sentence. Here are some idioms used in the book: "to play possum", "on the spur of the moment", "to spill the beans", "like Caesar's wife", "to take by storm", "by hook or by crook", "Achilles heel", etc. As you can imagine, with 46 weeks of study (5 lessons in each), there are a lot of idioms!- There is a summary exercise at the end of each week. All answers are provided at the end of the book.Cons:- I was surprised that there are no definitions provided. They just throw words at you - go figure what does "alleviate" or "vindicate" mean. The spelling is there, but no definitions. I assume that it's easier to use a Kindle version of the book, where you can highlight a word and using the Internet, read the actual meaning of it. On the other hand, exercises are probably better in the printed version of the book - you can write the answers in the spaces provided.For non-native English speakers: This is not the only books that you will need to improve your English language skills. You may also want to check out these books on Amazon: "McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage", "Everybody writes" by Ann Handley, "How to say it" by Maggie Rosalio, "Barron's Dictionary of American Idioms", "American Accent Training" by Ann Cook, "The blue book of grammar and punctuation", and "English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide".

I bought this in Jan/2015 as an adjunct to the latest (6th) edition of the book by the same name (1100 Words You Need to Know). I have the box set published on July/2014.The good:(1) the cards are cleverly designed with 2 words on each card.(2) it is supposed to correlate with the book for an additional layer of review.The Bad:(1) the paper is thin, flimsy, and thus these cards won't last very long with much handling. We have 4 vocabulary students in our house, and this set probably can't take that much use! An "organizer" ring is included, but with the thin paper, I anticipate the punched out hole on each card will rip easy. Lamination is an option, as another reviewer suggested. But this means more work, and more $$$.(2) I thought that by buying the latest book, and the latest vocab box set that they would match. But, already, week 1, day 2, I have found that they don't correlate (book: "technology"; cards: "etiology"). I wonder how many other words on other study days won't correlate?Conclusion:This product just doesn't seem yet ready for primetime. Be wary of buying it unless Barron's makes the cards more sturdy, and ensures that the card list matches up with the book list.

Extremely disappointed that definitions ARE NOT INCLUDED. Seriously? So I hand this to my teenager, and he has to use his smartphone to look up the detailed definitions. Why in the name of XXX are detailed definitions not included? Synonyms are NOT definitions. Sheesh.

This is a classic case of quantity trumping quality. First, the definitions are usually spartan, often (but not always) encompassing no more than one-to-three words. Most words have various nuances in meanings, and SAT often cleverly tests knowledge of words beyond the simple "sound-bite" definitions often presented here. Second, only a single definition is usually provided for words with multiple, separate meanings. A good example is the word "countenance," which is defined in dictionaries as either "appearance," or "tolerate." In these cards, only the "tolerate" definition is offered. Imagine the student smugly confident that he's mastered the definition of this word going into the SAT exam, only to find that SAT chooses the "appearance" definition rather than the "tolerate" definition presented in these cards. I could cite dozens of similar examples. Third, synonyms are not listed, except occasionally in the definitions. Here again, SAT often goes with synonyms rather than with the "headline" definitions. Finally, with some words, I have found incorrect pronunciation guides (I checked three separate online dictionaries, none of which offered similar pronunciation). I also found one word (in a definition) misspelled -- totally inexcusable in a product of this nature. However, I do laud the fact that the sample sentences given here often incorporate other words in the deck. For those seeking to beef up their vocabulary, I suggest the far superior Princeton Review products. For those wishing to stick to flash cards, the Manhattan Prep flashcards, while not offering as many words, are vastly superior, giving very detailed definitions and synonyms. The Kaplan Flip-O-Matic flashcards, while inferior to the Manhattan Prep flashcards, also better the Barron's Flashcards.

It would be awesome to see more festivals represented (e.g., Christmas in India, Sankranti, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc.). Also, what would really be cool is if Neel and Maya visited each state in India and learned about their food, culture, clothing, language, important sights to see, etc. India is such a beautifully diverse country, and it would be great to showcase the diversity of each state in this book series so that Indian American kids can be proud of their heritage!

Very well done! I have purchased all 4 books in the Maya & Neel series so far and it has been a great way to educate my 3 year old daughter about various festivals celebrated in India. Looking forward to more books!

My 5 year old son is hooked on this series! He loves reading about Maya & Neel & the little squirrel Chintu! We are a multi-cultural family and I spend a lot of time trying to find fun kids books about different cultures and religions. This one is fantastic! It's fun to read because they take you through the Ramadan & Eid holidays from beginning to end from the kids perspective so you really feel like you are experiencing it as part of the family too! My son learned a lot reading this and is already excited for the next adventure of Maya & Neel in India!

This book is so helpful, informational, and fun to read! Not only as a Muslim who likes to teach people about her faith and culture, but also as an elementary teacher! I had my students read the book and they LOVED it! They loved the characters Maya, Neel, and Chintu. They were very interested in why Muslims fast during Ramadan because they know that their teacher does. Reading this book really helped me in explaining to my kids how and why Muslims believe so much in fasting. I couldn't have asked for a better book on Ramadan and Eid :)I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about Islam or different cultures.

I have been bless with the gift of a 2 neices this year. Both now with a Muslim and Christian background. So as a part of my exciting and awesome Auntie duties, I have been on an avid search to find a children's books that would highlight the holy month and celebration of Eid! Search over !!! Anjanta's "Let's Celebrate Ramadan and Eid" has breathtaking illustrations and informative text. This book magnificently captures the world of Islam, celebrating its beauty and traditions for even the youngest readers. Vivek and Ajanta have produced another stellar informative childrens book. I first got the Diwali book in their series as a means to educate my daughter about her Indian roots . The book brought me fond memories of eid at my friends houses and ended up teaching me a lesson instead- that ramadan and eid was also a part of my heritage and that exposure to friends who celebrated it when I was growing up helped nurture my tolerance towards and respect for all religions. I hope my daughter develops a similar outlook . I cant wait for the "Mallu Christmas" book !

I and my son truly enjoyed reading this colorful book. It was published well in time for this year's Ramadan. It's very sweet book to introduce children to what is Ramadan and Eid in a simple way. It focuses on the basic rituals of Ramadan followed by the description of how Eid is celebrated in India. It is a fun and easy read, kids would love it!
