This book is certain to stir controversy among those who love classical history. He unfortunately is not that familiar with the works of Raoul McLaughlinThe Roman Empire and the Indian Ocean: The Ancient World Economy and the Kingdoms of Africa, Arabia and India. Harper has a wonderful description of the ‘economic efflorescence’ of the ‘Roman Climate Optimum’.This work is concerned with climate change and what the author feels are its positive (yes, climate change can be positive) and negative effects in the Late Holocene. The author identifies 6 causes of climate change: 1) Variations in the tilt of the earth’s axis - 41,000 year cycle. 2) Precession (wobbly spin) of the axis- 26,000 year cycle. 3) Slight variable eccentricity in the earth’s orbit 4) Volcanism 5) Significant variations in the earth’s orbit around the sun, and 6) Anthropogenic change; the least influential.Much of the author’s conclusions are based on teeth and bone analysis which he admits are still in its early stages. I do believe he over-emphasized the ‘plague of Cyprian’, and in general he too readily accepts the force of 4th century urbanization and the positive influence of the Church. He speaks of ‘obscure turmoil’ on the steppes (P.190) but does not seem able to show a definitive linkage with the effects of climate change. He gives a significant role to the force of the barbarian invasions, which overwhelmed the tremendous organic strength of a renewed and reformed Roman Empire.The best chapter was the discussion of the bubonic plague in the age of Justinian. The author feels that the combination of war, plague and climate change (LALIA- Late Antique Little Ice Age) was devastating. Yet, the author has no firm explanation of the ‘years with no summer’ of this period. He suggests volcanism or a meteor impact, but cannot name any suspect volcano or evidence of a meteor strike. The end of the book is overly verbose, philosophical and wanders into the apocalyptic.The Fate of Rome is superbly researched with outstanding notes and bibliography. The maps unfortunately are often unreadable in the print version, but are fine in the kindle edition (where the footnotes are not as convenient.

This is a great book. I read a lot of ancient and non-so-ancient history. One of my major interests is in the rise and fall of civilizations. I'm a big fan of Peter Turchin's books on the causes of rise and fall. If you liked William H. McNeill's Plagues & Peoples and want to read something newer buyt focused on just one society and with decades more understanding of genetic history of diseases and of archaeology of the Roman Empire then read Harper's book.Harper does a good job of telling you what is known and what is speculation. For example, the plague during Marcus Aurelius's reign (the Antonine Plague) is very likely smallpox. But the Plague of Cyprian from the 250's AD still is a mystery. Might be smallpox. But more likely either an early severe influenza (think Spanish Flu of 1918) or a filovirus (which includes Marburg and Ebola in the family). It is possible we might know some day.The Readers Digest 3 sentences version of the book: Harper thinks the cooling and droughts brought on by the end of the Roman Climate Optimum (during which it rained in Alexandria 11 months of the year!) and the influx of diseases enabled by the trading routes of Pax Romana) so weakened the Roman Empire it could not defend its borders. He also throws in state development along the borders as another cause. But mainly he points to disease and drought and cooling as the forces that brought down the empire.While I find Harper's case compelling I think Harper is leaving out one cause of collapse that Peter Turchin emphasizes: waning of ability of a state to harness a collective will. Look at the Roman Republic during the first 2 Punic wars by contrast. Italy had Carthaginian armies rampaging around for years. But the Romans refused to consider themselves defeated no matter how many battles they lost. They just kept coming back and fighting. Their willingness to take very heavy losses and not really feel defeated was essential for the survival of the Roman Republic. But centuries of rule by Emperors left the Romans feeling not so personally responsible for the survival of the state.I'm not disputing that absent the diseases and climate change that the Roman Empire would have lasted much longer. But I suspect earlier generations of Romans would not have been so easily defeated by climate change, mass killer epidemics, and big tribal invasions.

This was a good source book, but needed more in the way of game resources, it would have been nice to see some of the mechs of this era with equipment filled out. I had read Heir to the Dragon before this, and the few mechs that were talked about for this time frame would have been nice to see done up on sheets. If you are into this era of play its a nice book to have, but if your into the clan era this is not worth your time or money, Also, as with Brush Wars this book is full of spelling and grammatical errors, plus in some spots the authors just can't keep their thought proses straight or consistency.

Overall, this was a nice read. The book contained nice maps an some new artwork. However, there are no new Battlemechs, or any other gear included, aside from some general descriptions of weapons systems.Only buy this book if you play the Role playing Game or want to have a complete set of BT books!

Excellent exposition of a conflict overshadowed by the events of the preceding Succession War and the following Clan invasion. The writing remains informative without getting too dry, and is augmented with fitting black and white illustrations.

Bought digital version of 5th edition in May 2015. Edition delivered to my Kindle for iPad is labeled "5th Edition" but is actually the text of the 4th edition from 1999. Amazon's kindle online preview shows the proper 5th edition from 2007. The book itself is excellent but I'm disappointed by Amazon's substitution of an out-of-date edition.Updated March 10, 2016: Amazon kindly issued a refund when the problem was brought to their attention. Great customer service!

I am an investment analyst and used this book to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry. I found it to be clear, well organized, and containing all the info I needed to understand the dynamics driving the business and the lingo. There was more engineering and scientific info than I needed for my purposes, but it was useful to thumb through those chapters to get a high level understanding of the issues. Highly recommended for people new to the industry.

Oddly, only one reference book proved adequate, in my opinion, in explaining refinery science: "William Leffler's "Petroleum Refining." The others, including "Petroleum Refining, Technology and Economics," by James Gary, Glenn Handwerk, and Mark Kaiser, "Refining Processes Handbook," by Surinder Parkash, and even the venerable "Petroleum Processing Handbook," by Bland and Davidson. Leffler wins out because his process descriptions are fairly detailed compared to the others while balancing a need to be understood by the non-technically educated. Where this text, by Gary, Handwerk, and Kaiser fails is its lack of detailed process design information.For example, I was somewhat disappointed in the section on hydrotreating. This process involves removal of nitrogen and sulfur and alkylation of alkenes, phenols and benzenes from a feed of gas oils recovered from a pipestill. Tables provided showed the expected performance for the catalyst beds; some discussion was presented of the differences between fixed bed reactors and moving bed reactors. Only scant information was provided on reactor design. Even though it might have risked going into detail about a particular catalyst at the expense of others there was no exploration beyond mere statements of information such as hydrogen consumption and space velocity requirements. A good example of the failure to provide detail design information is the authors' reluctance to provide hydrogen consumption information in section 9.5.Instead, the reader is referred to a monograph written by W.L. Nelson in 1971 for the Oil and Gas Journal. Why not present the data?This situation highlights the primary problem with this text and the others: a lack of process design information. This book would have to grow by another hundred pages to meet his ambitions goal of providing a good reference for petroleum refining. Only Leffler meets this goal ¯ and, he does it without the science and engineering required in the other references.Unless you want incomplete details on the subject of petroleum refining, buy Leffler, not this text. However, of the others, this is a good reference book for the subject. Be prepared to fill in the copious quantities of gaps in information. 2 stars deducted for deceit. I bought this book because I like vegan recipes than can be made in one pot, namely, soups and stews. Little did I know I already owned this book under the title: Vegetarian Soups for All Seasons. Dummy me! I thought this was a *new* book. It’s not. Here’s the difference. Wherever the vegetarian book calls for milk, the vegan book calls for rice milk. Sour cream is replaced with Silk creamer. Regular cheese with vegan cheese. That’s it. That’s what I bought a new book for. Not happy. Last comment: the original publication, the vegetarian version, has a far superior layout; everything’s better - the font, the ink, the table of contents, the index. The worst thing about the new vegan version is that the ingredients for each recipe is printed in a light orange ink that is hard to see and read. Also, the table of contents of the vegan version only lists fall, winter, spring, and summer, whereas the vegetarian version lists all the recipes under each season. My recommendation is to buy the vegetarian version and veganize the recipes yourself.

My husband and I LOVE this book. It is divided into seasons, which makes choosing what to make easy. And there are a lot of choices, lots of recipes in this book! The recipes are neither overly simplistic nor complicated, they are just right. I really appreciate that all of the recipes we have tried turned out spot on, great flavors and seasoning, no “tweaking” required!! We really love soup and this book hasn’t budged from the kitchen since we received it, I cook from it once or twice per week. Fabulous purchase.

I've already tried some of the recipes and they are wonderful. There is a lot of flavor in each and (so far) they have been just as good cold the next day as they were hot (one of my requirements for soups). The recipes are grouped by season, so you'll be using the veggies in season. There is rudimentary nutritional information on each soup. There are also occasional sayings, tips, and variations offered. There are NOT many pictures, which is kind of a bummer (just a few color pages in the middle of the book). I like to see what the stuff is supposed to look like, so I would have liked a few more pictures!

I checked this book out from the library before buying from Amazon. The deciding factor in whether to borrow or buy was the international recipes ... curries, Moroccan, Chinese, African, German, etc. Not a lot of photos, but the titles are quite descriptive. My first two recipes this coming weekend will be the African-Inspired Quinoa-Peanut Soup and the Thai-Flavored Coconut Vegetable Soup. From the bread recipes in the back will be the Onion-Rye Scones and the Tomato-Olive Bread.

I was hoping this was new as I’ve had the Nava Atlas Vegetarian Soups book for many years. Not new, same recipes with a few vegan updates anyone could easily do without purchasing the same book twice. Disappointing.

As a person who has over 30 vegan cookbooks (My husband can't believe there are that many vegan cookbooks in print!) I definitely will add this one to those at the top of my list. One of the best things about this book is that it is divided into seasons, so it's easy to find the produce at a reasonable price in the grocery store and it's more likely that it will be locally grown. Another thing I like is that the ingredients are mostly easy to find. I love weird ingredients as much as anyone, but when you are trying to figure out what to make for dinner you don't want to have to run all over town trying to find something that's obscure.My favorite recipe so far is a fall one, Sweet and Sour Sauerkraut Soup which includes carrots, celery, potatoes, diced tomatoes and of course, sauerkraut among other things. If you don't like sauerkraut or sour foods, skip this one, but I think it's even better the next day. Another favorite is the Okra-Rice Gumbo or the Thai-Flavored Coconut Vegetable Soup. These all go together pretty quickly and if you double the recipe you'll have enough for a couple days and the flavors have a way of melding together that makes them all the better.Soup is always great with a big salad and some crusty bread and this cookbook has a lot of imaginative recipes, not just the same old standbys. It's one of those books that's fun to just go through and read because I always seem to find one recipe that is appealing for that particular day, no matter what sort of mood I'm in. Two thumbs up for this book! I'll be looking forward to more vegan cookbooks by Nava Atlas.

This is an excellent book with many wonderful recipes. They are separated by season, i.e., winter, summer, fall, spring which is very helpful. Ms. Atlas is my favorite vegan author as her cookbooks have never failed to be good and have lots of information in them.

What's not to like about soup? They are simple and easy to prepare and now even better that Nava has them for all seasons! One can enjoy her tasty stews and various soups all year long. Using ingredients that are available at any grocery store makes this cookbook even better. The recipes presented are not complicated and even offer their nutritional value. Some of my favorites thus far have been the "Creamy Parsnip-Vegetable Soup", the "White Bean and Hominy Soup" and my all time favorite, the "Taco Soup". The flavors in this soup were absolutely delightful! The author also has a chapter on accompaniments which include various quick breads, muffins and scones that compliment most of the soups in the book. If you love soup, do buy this book and add it amongst your vegan cookbooks!

This book is a non-fiction account of the development of a mini-computer in the 1980s. The book begins by describing the background: Data General, a computer company, has been recently leapfrogged by a competitor who put out a 32-bit mini computer system over their 16-bit system. To keep up with their major competitor (DEC), the company begins a development project for their own 32-bit mini computer.The company HQ is based in Massachusetts. What complicates matters is that the CEO establishes a new R&D center in North Carolina where he hopes the new 32-bit mini computer will be built. The new R&D center however, creates a major rift between the engineers who stayed in Massachusetts and the ones who work in North Carolina - as both groups want to be in charge of development. A major feud begins, but basically the group in North Carolina wins and gets to build the new 32-bit system.However, the story begins in Massachusetts....Tom West, an engineering manager in Massachusetts, manages to convince the management that it would be worthwhile to have a 'back-up' 32-bit computer system, that was perhaps backwards compatible with their old 16-bit systems. It would be a sort of 'insurance' so to speak in case development efforts in North Carolina took too long.With a handful of experienced engineers as team leaders, he recruits essentially fresh college graduates and works the hell out of them to create a rival 32-bit computer system.Over the course of the book, it becomes apparent that the North Carolina facility - despite having more resources, money, engineers, etc. - will not in fact be able to launch their product in a timely fashion. West's team of new recruits really does need to release their product in order for the company to continue competing in the mini-computer market.The book is not written so much on the technical details of the project, but rather is more of a 'documentary' of the experience of being on the product development team.The level of detail this book captures, and at each level (from West's perspective, the perspective of a number of the fresh college graduates, his experienced Team Leaders who speculated on West's motives in driving everyone so hard, the background situation of the company and management) is perfect.Looking back historically, one could easily just conclude that the Massachusetts team succeeded for all sorts of technical reasons. But there were a lot of interesting human reasons for why the project succeeded. For one, the project should have never been started in Massachusetts in the first place. The company management did not seem to have any clear idea of what to put their engineers to work on (or even really know what they were working on) and a wily manager was able to sneak the project by, masquerading it as something else.As engineer on a product development team for a robotic system, I can 100% relate to this book.The ridiculous management decisions, the company politics, engineers working insane hours on esoteric problems, the strange culture of engineers, the product launch and general lack of appreciation for the engineer's work afterwards - it's amazingly well captured in this book, and I was surprised at how my current company and previous company experiences relate so strongly to the product development described here.What I liked most about it, was that a lot of the decisions made by West, the company, etc were highly irrational, if you looked at them from the company perspective. The company SHOULD have only had one group working on the development project. West SHOULD have explained to his team the importance of what they were working on and perhaps been more involved on the day to day decisions of the project, just as the VP of Engineering SHOULD have been more cognizant of what West's entire team was up to. (The author writes about 'mushroom management' in the book - keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em *edited by Amazon Censors*). But in reality, for often political reasons, feuds, the strange driven personality of a particular manager, the strange management practices of the CEO, all of these mistakes get made, and yet a 32-bit mini computer gets built and saves the company in the end anyway.It's a great book because it is all true.I am not sure how interesting this would be for someone that doesn't work in product development, but for me, I see this mistakes made in my company every day. It's amazing how much individual personalities, and strange coincidences can drive a project.An additional tidbit, Wired magazine did a follow up with all of the engineers years after this book was written:"[...]"Google 'O, Engineers!', 'Soul of a New Machine, Wired' in case Amazon gets rid of the link.A great book.

This book should be on the desk of every manager of technical projects in the US. More than any other work in history, it shows how innovation occurs, and how a few near-genius and hard-working individuals can get things done. It also shows modern organizational theory to be badly flawed, and that the much vaunted group-dynamics and teamwork cannot replace a few bright minds who are dedicated to inventing a new product. The Apple Computer is an example of the concept I'm describing: Steve Wozniac invented the Apple in his garage, and Steve Jobs marketed it. Amazing, isn't it -- one man essentially created the personal computer all by himself. All alone, not even with a team made of diverse talents and representing various viewpoints. All they do is create kludges that require incessant maintenance and updates. Sound familiar?

I read this Pol based on few recommendations, it took me a while to finish it though. I find certain part of the book to detailed and boring eventually I had to put effort t finish it all. I cannot say it is bad written, on the contrary it reads well however the subject and the way to tell the story is not my way. Overall a classical book strongly recommended if you are a manager as it explains how to build a group of achiever and potentially shows the aftermath of great success.

A bunch of people haphazardly come together to build a new computer and with trust from their managers and earnest desire to excel in their craft manage to bring the damn thing to life.I personally found this relatable on so many levels; not only the pastiche of people working on the project but also the range of company politics and bickering. This book punched me in the stomach purely from the fact that the project's leader, Tom West, blatantly describes the power of trust to lead teams.An easy 10/10 recommendation from me to any technical person who will inevitably hit some kind of existential crisis in their career and find this book enlightening as it did for me.

I liked this book. The development of the MV/8000 was taking place about the time I was becoming involved in computers, and by the time it hit the market I was a field service engineer working on IBM mainframes, and playing around with a PDP-11 when I could. It was very interesting to read the account of how the hardware and microcode were developed, especially in light of the training I had in essentially similar microcoded machines around the same time frame.On the other hand, even after having read the entire book I still don't really get the feeling I understand what made a couple of the central players tick. Maybe the author never really figured it out either. Anyway, it's well written and well worth reading, especially if you can relate to the way things were "way back" at the tail end of the 70s and the early 80s.

I got this for my son's birthday, and the quality of the book was good enough for him! Yes it was used, but my son doesn't care neither did I. It worked out, and I couldn't have been happier! Thank you!

My son and daughter are big Blue Clue's Fan, and when my daughter got this book she replied "oh it's my favorite!" The story is simple and sweet. Blue goes to school and gets himself into situations and the readers need to help Blue decide how to solve the problem. My 2 1/2 year old was able to figure out the solutions to the problems, just like she does when watching the show. It holds her interest, yet is simple enough for her to "read" on her own. Very cute.

Blue fans will love this story set in school. Blue encounters situations that any preschooler might encounter and then the reader is given two visual choices to decide which would be the right course of action. I wish life came with such a helpful manual. Go ahead, your preschooler will love it.

Bought some books for my little one to adapt to preschool. He loves to help me read this in answering questions in the book. I ink its helpful for him to see similarities in his preschool as well as in the book.
