This book is a non-fiction account of the development of a mini-computer in the 1980s. The book begins by describing the background: Data General, a computer company, has been recently leapfrogged by a competitor who put out a 32-bit mini computer system over their 16-bit system. To keep up with their major competitor (DEC), the company begins a development project for their own 32-bit mini computer.The company HQ is based in Massachusetts. What complicates matters is that the CEO establishes a new R&D center in North Carolina where he hopes the new 32-bit mini computer will be built. The new R&D center however, creates a major rift between the engineers who stayed in Massachusetts and the ones who work in North Carolina - as both groups want to be in charge of development. A major feud begins, but basically the group in North Carolina wins and gets to build the new 32-bit system.However, the story begins in Massachusetts....Tom West, an engineering manager in Massachusetts, manages to convince the management that it would be worthwhile to have a 'back-up' 32-bit computer system, that was perhaps backwards compatible with their old 16-bit systems. It would be a sort of 'insurance' so to speak in case development efforts in North Carolina took too long.With a handful of experienced engineers as team leaders, he recruits essentially fresh college graduates and works the hell out of them to create a rival 32-bit computer system.Over the course of the book, it becomes apparent that the North Carolina facility - despite having more resources, money, engineers, etc. - will not in fact be able to launch their product in a timely fashion. West's team of new recruits really does need to release their product in order for the company to continue competing in the mini-computer market.The book is not written so much on the technical details of the project, but rather is more of a 'documentary' of the experience of being on the product development team.The level of detail this book captures, and at each level (from West's perspective, the perspective of a number of the fresh college graduates, his experienced Team Leaders who speculated on West's motives in driving everyone so hard, the background situation of the company and management) is perfect.Looking back historically, one could easily just conclude that the Massachusetts team succeeded for all sorts of technical reasons. But there were a lot of interesting human reasons for why the project succeeded. For one, the project should have never been started in Massachusetts in the first place. The company management did not seem to have any clear idea of what to put their engineers to work on (or even really know what they were working on) and a wily manager was able to sneak the project by, masquerading it as something else.As engineer on a product development team for a robotic system, I can 100% relate to this book.The ridiculous management decisions, the company politics, engineers working insane hours on esoteric problems, the strange culture of engineers, the product launch and general lack of appreciation for the engineer's work afterwards - it's amazingly well captured in this book, and I was surprised at how my current company and previous company experiences relate so strongly to the product development described here.What I liked most about it, was that a lot of the decisions made by West, the company, etc were highly irrational, if you looked at them from the company perspective. The company SHOULD have only had one group working on the development project. West SHOULD have explained to his team the importance of what they were working on and perhaps been more involved on the day to day decisions of the project, just as the VP of Engineering SHOULD have been more cognizant of what West's entire team was up to. (The author writes about 'mushroom management' in the book - keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em *edited by Amazon Censors*). But in reality, for often political reasons, feuds, the strange driven personality of a particular manager, the strange management practices of the CEO, all of these mistakes get made, and yet a 32-bit mini computer gets built and saves the company in the end anyway.It's a great book because it is all true.I am not sure how interesting this would be for someone that doesn't work in product development, but for me, I see this mistakes made in my company every day. It's amazing how much individual personalities, and strange coincidences can drive a project.An additional tidbit, Wired magazine did a follow up with all of the engineers years after this book was written:"[...]"Google 'O, Engineers!', 'Soul of a New Machine, Wired' in case Amazon gets rid of the link.A great book.

This book should be on the desk of every manager of technical projects in the US. More than any other work in history, it shows how innovation occurs, and how a few near-genius and hard-working individuals can get things done. It also shows modern organizational theory to be badly flawed, and that the much vaunted group-dynamics and teamwork cannot replace a few bright minds who are dedicated to inventing a new product. The Apple Computer is an example of the concept I'm describing: Steve Wozniac invented the Apple in his garage, and Steve Jobs marketed it. Amazing, isn't it -- one man essentially created the personal computer all by himself. All alone, not even with a team made of diverse talents and representing various viewpoints. All they do is create kludges that require incessant maintenance and updates. Sound familiar?

I read this Pol based on few recommendations, it took me a while to finish it though. I find certain part of the book to detailed and boring eventually I had to put effort t finish it all. I cannot say it is bad written, on the contrary it reads well however the subject and the way to tell the story is not my way. Overall a classical book strongly recommended if you are a manager as it explains how to build a group of achiever and potentially shows the aftermath of great success.

A bunch of people haphazardly come together to build a new computer and with trust from their managers and earnest desire to excel in their craft manage to bring the damn thing to life.I personally found this relatable on so many levels; not only the pastiche of people working on the project but also the range of company politics and bickering. This book punched me in the stomach purely from the fact that the project's leader, Tom West, blatantly describes the power of trust to lead teams.An easy 10/10 recommendation from me to any technical person who will inevitably hit some kind of existential crisis in their career and find this book enlightening as it did for me.

I liked this book. The development of the MV/8000 was taking place about the time I was becoming involved in computers, and by the time it hit the market I was a field service engineer working on IBM mainframes, and playing around with a PDP-11 when I could. It was very interesting to read the account of how the hardware and microcode were developed, especially in light of the training I had in essentially similar microcoded machines around the same time frame.On the other hand, even after having read the entire book I still don't really get the feeling I understand what made a couple of the central players tick. Maybe the author never really figured it out either. Anyway, it's well written and well worth reading, especially if you can relate to the way things were "way back" at the tail end of the 70s and the early 80s.

I got this for my son's birthday, and the quality of the book was good enough for him! Yes it was used, but my son doesn't care neither did I. It worked out, and I couldn't have been happier! Thank you!

My son and daughter are big Blue Clue's Fan, and when my daughter got this book she replied "oh it's my favorite!" The story is simple and sweet. Blue goes to school and gets himself into situations and the readers need to help Blue decide how to solve the problem. My 2 1/2 year old was able to figure out the solutions to the problems, just like she does when watching the show. It holds her interest, yet is simple enough for her to "read" on her own. Very cute.

Blue fans will love this story set in school. Blue encounters situations that any preschooler might encounter and then the reader is given two visual choices to decide which would be the right course of action. I wish life came with such a helpful manual. Go ahead, your preschooler will love it.

Bought some books for my little one to adapt to preschool. He loves to help me read this in answering questions in the book. I ink its helpful for him to see similarities in his preschool as well as in the book.

You can view this novel as a well-written story of a decent-at-heart man coming of age morally. The irony is that he is a 35-year old evangelical preacher, so the "coming of age" theme is going to be shocking to a lot of readers on the humanist side of the moral/ethical spectrum. This emerging soul, Asher Sharp, has betrayed and rejected his beloved older brother because he was "different" (including being gay) and later, after watching two gay men save the lives of a neighbor and his daughter, he cannot stand up to his wife when she demands that the the two men be ejected from his house into a raging storm because of what Asher's congregation might think of their being under the preacher's roof. While that inexcusable decision begin to turn his thinking around, it also untethers him from other realities and sends him down a self-destructive path with the thinnest hope of eventual redemption.Bottom line for this reader is, I wanted a lot more from this novel. Admittedly, I had problems with the opening premise that the golden rule is not adhered to by people who consider themselves very religious. But also, in its conclusion, this novel suggests that while there may be some future hope for the protagonist Asher and some of his kin, the community from which he springs will be locked in its hard-hearted views toward people outside their particular religion indefinitely. it may be that the author is simply being realistic about the insular ways of much of society, but it left me feeling sad and frustrated at the book's conclusion.

What a wonderful story this is. It was easy to get caught up in this read: The prose is lovely, the plot moves quickly, and characters are living, breathing, three dimensional beings. All of the characters are challenged by change, both the changes they seek out for themselves (for better and for worse), and the changes that they have thrust upon them. To tell you what those changes are would be to spoil the surprises of the story. Buy Southernmost, read it, and find out for yourself!I'm a long-time fan of Silas House, and this book stands out to me. I've lived in Appalachia all my life, much of it in West Virginia, and I know the kinds of places and people that House writes about. In his previous novels, much of the story takes place in Appalachia, and that's perfectly fine: reading House's vivid and evocative descriptions of Appalachia, even tight hollers and small towns feel like entire worlds that the reader is priveleged to inhabit. But the world of Southernmost feels larger still. Here, Silas takes us from Appalachia to Florida and back again, and we get to spend much of our time in Key West. This out-and-back journey gives readers a different perspective on Appalachia than we would have if we'd spent the whole novel in the country. On the one hand, the characters find (sometimes to their surprise!) that many of their struggles are ones they share in common--troubles affecting Floridians and Appalachians alike. Their shared experiences efface the trivial differences in language, dialect, or culture: Appalachia, House reminds us, doesn't stand aloof from the rest of the country. On the other hand, by leading us out of Appalachia and back again, House is able to underscore the differences between the more conservative (and sometimes outmoded and hidebound) values of the people of Appalachia and the more open and forward-thinking values found in Key West. Finally, the journey finds a rich parralel in the minds and hearts of the characters: Just as we eventually must make our way home after a long jounrey, so a person must, having undergone some radical change in their thinking or worldview, find a way to incorporate these consequential changes into their work-a-day lives. And when our new ways of living and thinking clash with the same-as-always world around us (when we change but our surroundings don't), conflict is inevitable. It is precisely this kind of conflict that drives the story, and keeps the pages turning.

I loved this book. It was gentle and full of kindness, while at the same time dealing with difficult issues of religious intolerance, divorce and child kidnapping. Without being preachy, it is a book about how kindness really is a way to bring us closer to God, even when a flawed character makes grievous mistakes. It reminded me of Mr. Roger's admonition, "Look for the helpers." I giving this as a gift to several friends.

Hands down one of the best novels I have ever read. Being from Eastern KY and from a conservative religious family I felt as if Silas had read my mind and put them in his book. Excellent read!!!

Beautifully written novel about a preacher who takes a stand and loses the most important person in his life. It is a novel that is tender, full of pain and heartache, but also promising. It is meaningful without being preachy, it’s focus on the belief that we should all “Love More.”

This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in recent years. I tend to read very literary books, interspersed with “junk food” page-turners. It is a rare thing to find a page-turner that is so beautifully written. It was a constant conflict—part of me wanted to see what happened next, and part of me wanted to take my time and soak in all the gorgeous, sometimes painful, descriptions of nature and humanity. I remember even the very minor characters with such clarity. It’s one of those books where I wonder what the people in it are up to these days—that’s how real and memorable they are.Silas House is a beautiful writer, and I am not quite sure why he isn’t a household name. While I have loved all his books, this one is his best and the one that should take him there.

Was not hoping for much. The world of books on Amazon is large, and clogged with five star reviews of dreck. This one read like a long short story: you knew more or less where everything was going and it got there quickly with relatively few surprises. But unlike so many books on Amazon, the quality of quitting didn't sag after the first third, and the story didn't run out of ideas in the last third. Everything turned out amazing for everyone, who were all exceptional, which is grating, but in its defence it had honestly telegraphed that likelihood from the beginning. And the protagonists voice and the characterizations kept being warm and funny. Though not so many surprises, and a slight surfeit of twenty-something gee-whiz for this old dude, I enjoyed the enthusiasm, and the commitment to decent writing. I jumped right into the free sample of the next book, liked it and bought it, for far more than this one cost (hmm, how did that happen).

I admit that I picked this up because of the peculiar title. Turns out the characters were just as curious about this bookstore as I was—and rightly so!Set in San Francisco, Sloan does a pretty good caricature of the Bay Area startup scene, and even throws big tech players like Google into the mix—the latter actually plays a surprisingly key role here! I’ve only been living in the Bay Area for about three months now (at the time of this review), but even I had to appreciate the nods to the neighborhoods I’ve visited.Clay Jannon is a semi-fresh college grad hoping to find some footing in a post-Recession jobscape. He’s likeable and relatable—the roommate we’ve all met or had in our early twenties. He’s self-depracting and also not particularly talented. This isn’t a harsh critique of his character, by the way. In fact, he makes this admission several times throughout the novel.But what Clays is really good at is making friends with extremely gifted specialists—all of whom play a part in the larger story....and that leads me to my biggest critique.Because for every obstacle Clay faces, he also “just so happens” to have a major resource at his disposal that can solve the problem. So even though I thought the story was adorably quirky, insightful, and tender, there were a lot of plot points that wrapped up a little too neatly for me.Also, if you happen to be a professional codebreaker, this book will either pique your interest or frustrate you to no end. I am not a professional codebreaker, so I found this aspect of the book both entertaining and suspenseful.My final verdict is that Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is a whimsical read that’s sure to please book lovers of all backgrounds—but especially if they live in California.

I picked up this book one day because it looked like something that I might enjoy. Then life occurred and it became buried in my TBR stacks and I forgot about it. It wasn't until I was researching books for my book group that I remembered it. Then it was offically chosen and it finally got its turn.I geniunely enjoyed this book. I found myself picturing the story while reading it and I longed to see this bookstore in real life. The idea of a bookstore containing unusual books that most people have never heard of is exciting to me. It definitely makes me wonder what gems may be hidden in my nearest bookstore.I am rating this book Four Stars because it drug in some spots and was predictable. I enjoyed it but I did have a few moments where I felt like I was reading an advertisement rather than a novel. The characters were likeable and relatable. The premise was fantastic and I would love to find a bookstore like the one from the story. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I will be looking into his other titles. My favorite line in this book is, "And if you think that's cool, you're over thirty." Robin Sloan has successfully written a book chock full of fun, particularly if you are a millennial with a propensity to change the world though technology and perhaps live forever drinking kale smoothies. I was a little disappointed as I searched for an underlying story, but continued reading enjoying the delightful way the romance and adventure unfolded without one. I appreciated Sloan's references to a fantasy task force, but truthfully got a little bogged down when he used pages of fantasy metaphor. But then, I'm over thirty.

Lately, I've come across some real clinkers -- so much so that I sent out an email query to solicit recommendations for something good to read. A buddy out in CA recommended this one, and I'm really glad he did.Sloan's story is tight, well-paced, and interesting. He uses language beautifully. There's humor and its more dignified cousin, wit. There are solid, vivid characters. Even minor characters are painted with enough detail to be interesting.One thing: something about the title made me think of a YA (or even younger) novel, but while the... romantic aspects of this book are very understated (and thus appropriate, I think, for a younger audience) I don't the plot or characters would be that appealing to the under eighteen set. Maybe I'm wrong about that, and in any case it's not a criticism, merely an observation. Anyway, it's a book adults will enjoy.Another thing: something about the title also implied a fantasy novel, but, while quirky, nothing in the book actually violates Reality As We Know It. Fantasy novels figure in the story to a modest degree, but this isn't a fantasy novel. You certainly don't have to be "into" fantasy to enjoy the book.One final thing: I thought I guessed the ending. Then I thought I guessed another, equally plausible ending. I was delightfully wrong both times.

I seriously hate this book, it's not organized. Everything is all over the place & it's like a scavenger hunt trying to find what you're looking for. For example, when looking for adverse effects, they're all listed in one paragraph for multiple drugs, but it's like that for EVERYTHING. It takes far too long to try & find what you're looking for, unless you sit down & literally highlight different drugs with different color.

I bought this cookbook for my son whose in college. He is really impressed with the recipes in this cookbook. He once told me, "Mom, this is the best air fryer cookbook I have used so far. But I wish it had more recipe images. It has quick and easy to cook recipes which really taste like home dishes. Most of them take just 15 minutes to prepare and cook. And I now spend less money and time in grocery stores. All thanks to the Author!"

As a ketogenic Vegan, I felt reluctant in buying this cookbook because I have bought about 3 keto vegan cookbook which never met my expectations. I think I don't regret buying it because most of the air fryer recipes met my taste and are also helping me cope with my lifestyle. This cookbook is so unique. Am always coming back to this cookbook to pick quick air fryer recipes. I love it!

We just wedded last week. I bought this 5 ingredients or less air fryer cookbook to help spice up our honeymoon. The recipes in the cookbook are simple but awesome. I see my hubby smile anytime I prepare a new air fryer meal from this cookbook. Also, some of the recipes take less than 30 minutes to prepare and cook. This helps me manage my time very well. I think I will recommend it for any family of two who use air fryer!
