While I didn't particularly care for her other series (the one that features a certain sparkly vampire), Stephenie Meyer certainly surprised me with The Host. Considering I'm not a big fan of books about aliens, the fact that I actually liked this one is a big deal! The story was cleverly told, weaving multiple plot lines together seamlessly. But, best of all, Meyer presented me with new characters - particularly Wanderer, Ian and Jamie - to care about and be invested in.Wanderer, or Wanda, as she's known in the novel, is my favorite of the characters. It's not just because I like her name, or how it symbolizes the totality of who she is (and the kind of person I'd like to be when it comes to travel). It's because I adored her spirit. In spite of being a soul, part of an alien race that takes over various planets through their insertion into the planet's inhabitants, Wanda is kind, considerate, generous and intelligent. The sincerity of her choices was appealing, and easy to like, so it's not surprising that I grew really attached to her.Ian and Jamie would tie for my second favorite character in this novel, as they're both important parts of Wanda's story. Jamie is the little brother of Melanie, Wanderer's "host". Through Melanie's memories and her own interactions with him, Wanda grows to love him and it's really sweet to see how he responds so honestly and sincerely to her. He was always able to distinguish between the two - Melanie and Wanda - which was certainly great. Ian also ended up having the same ability, even though initially he was against Wanda's presence in their little band of humans. Witnessing his transformation and watching his regard for Wanda really grow as the story progressed made it easy to like him as much as Wanderer did.Honestly, the book's beginning was pretty rough. It took a few chapters before I felt invested enough to keep on turning the pages, but once it clicked, the feeling of needing to know what happened next stayed with me up until the end. Meyer did a great job with the story-telling, combining romance, friendship and a bigger conflict. Instead of filling this book with physical action scenes, Meyer chose a slightly quieter route where she convinced readers to care about these characters and then presented us with a moral conflict that fits the context of their story. Doing so could have potentially backfired, but it definitely ended up working well.If what I've said in my review isn't enough to convince you to read the book, maybe the knowledge that I actually teared up while reading it will. I was that emotionally invested in Wanderer's story, and Melanie's too! Meyer caught me off guard with how good I found The Host. If you're unsure whether or not to give this book a try, let me be the first to suggest you give it a chance because you might just be surprised like I was.

I read this book back in my mid-teens when I was a huge Twilight fan and discovered that this was the same author.Though this is more for young adults rather than teens, the story has changed my view of life and humanity in ways I did not expect. I highly reccomend this book and this hardcover edition.The fact that this story is completely possible in some distant future is what I like the most though. That, and the fact that it's not your typical science fiction/futuristic story. It's more about the discovery of the true essence of being human.About the prose and the story itself--compelling, marvelously written, gets you real emotional at times, makes you identify and sometimes scream out loud... it's all that and more. Buy it! what you waiting for?! Don't watch the movie, read this!

I read this novel in 2013 and found it much different from her Twilight series and much better than the movie of this book. The story is told from Wanderer's point of view. Her people exist by being implanted into other beings and taking over their lives. Sounds like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" without the absence of emotion present with the aliens in that movie. This is the only way they can exist off their home planet and they have invaded and taken over many planets. Ironically they are a peaceful species and the humans that are turned into hosts mostly cease to exist, but the Souls retain the memory of their hosts. Wanderer's host is Melanie, a rebel female who stays present in Wanderer's mind and eventually they work together. There is also the added twist of romance with one man who loved Melanie and another who loves Wanderer, but both women share one body. I like the time the author takes to develop the human relationships with Wanderer which is at first hostile, violent and suspicious, but evolves with the help of Melanie's uncle. This isn't a flashy plot with guns blazing, but instead focuses on relationships, day to day existence, discovery, trust in both human and alien.

Give this book a chance. Stephanie Meyer really did a great job on this one. The characters are compelling and you like almost all of them. the themes and conflicts are an exciting breath of fresh air. Meyer's writing has really improved over the course of her career and I feel like this book really showed what she could do better than anything else she's written. The beginning of the book is a little slow, which is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. It's all important and I would never suggest to skip it but get through the first hundred pages. When the story changes (you'll know it when it happens), you won't be able to put this one down. I was set to be disappointed by this one in the beginning but it's one of my favorites now.

The author is obviously best known for the Twilight saga so I wasn’t expected a bad book. The gal can write but wow. This book blew me away. I saw the movie years and years ago and don’t remember much. I can’t compare the two but the book is extraordinary.It is rich in detail, inner and outer dialogue, character development and intrigue. It had a slow start but once Mel/Wanderer got going and truly began her journey, I was hooked.Meyer is a gem. I’m reading The Chemist next and pray it’s half as good. Please keep writing, Stephanie! We need more strong female authors who continue their craft.

One of my favorite cookbooks of all times, and one of the first I ever owned. I think this is the fifth one of these I've bought, because the others finally fell apart. There are recipes that may seem a bit dated, but there are classics that stand the test of time, as well. I particularly recommend the flank steak, the homemade mayonnaise (to which I add a few garlic cloves), and the green goddess dressing.Bon appetit!

Long before the Food Channel, my wife and i survived on the Sunset Book of Favorite Recipes. These were easy to learn for novice cooks. The book has a succinct index, an easy to use recipe format and cooking instructions with each item and is well organized. There must be thousands of these books floating around unfortunately they are all not the same though titled the same. Track one down be prepared for 35-50 year old soft covers. The pages can come loose so I patch them in with magic tape And hold the book together with those big black office clips (by ACCO). I still refer to it often because it is the quickest book in the kitchen to get information. Unless it is on the Kindle, then use that or use a computer. The later often has too many choices. I was given a copy of this cookbook as a wedding shower gift, 38 years ago, and have never been disappointed in anything I made following the recipes in it. I am happy to have a newer copy, but I'll keep my old one for our cabin. I will always need these recipes!

This was to replace my long-time falling-apart cookbook, out of print now apparently and later editions have different recipes. I was very pleasantly surprised at the condition of the book, looked like it had never been read. Terrific value at $3.95. I have sent copies to my daughters-in-law too.

This is my most used recipe book. Not always easy recipes but I have never been disappointed. I most often make the Monkey Bread, Pinnaple-Carrot cake, Cinnamon sour cream coffee cake, and a couple of the stew beef recipes. My original copy is old and tattered and unbound now, in a folder on my recipe book shelf. I am shopping for a copy now that has my missing page 67-68 (Sun River Bannana Bread). This is a Favorite recipe book. Happy eating!

I was extremely happy to get this book in such good condition. I've had my old one since the 1970"s and literally pages were coming loose and all my favorites pages were etched in grease and all the earmarks of my favorites. I have been scanning all the local thrift stores for the past five years before seeing it on Amazon and was so excited!! It truly is my favorite cookbook and I have many.

Received this book and it replaced one I had many years ago. Worn but was happy to find some priceless recipes again. Will order from them again.

I spend a lot of time listening to audiobooks in my truck throughout the day. I'm disappointed the audio CD is marketed as unabridged when in fact on the box it says abridged. It's only 4 hours 47 minutes long. The book is well over 300 pages. How much is deleted? I feel it's like watching a movie on network TV with all the commercials, editing and parts cut to fit time slot compared to seeing the movie on HBO. Story was good but I personally feel cheated.

This is an action packed novel and a thriller. There were times while reading it I could not believe it was a novel. As I read I became to know the Seal team members' families. I became so engrossed. I have read other Seal books so while reading I thought this was an operation by Seals on deployment. It had to have been a planned operation. I followed them every step of the way from Central America to Somalia, to the coast of Russia and finally to Mexico The book is so well written. I could not put it down. If you like action thrillers and mysteries read it. I loved it.

I'd been reading about Act of Valor for months.Since I'm a former Special Ops Plans Officer, I was very interested.I learned about the book in an article by Dick Couch published in Naval History Magazine, February 2012 (Volume 26, Number 1).Captain Couch, USN(Retired), was the highest ranking reserve SEAL at the time of his retirement. He is one of the preeminent SOF historians.Since I've read all of Dick Couch's book, I had to get this one. He adds background and detail to the movie.BTW - I saw the movie on Sunday and enjoyed it greatly. Most authentic since Blackhawk Down.

Gives a lot of insight into what the life of a seal might be like. Probably the greatest warriors ever to be on this planet. Thank God they are there to protect us.

We finally, after 10 years, have specific insight into a preeminent aspect of what has kept America safe since 9/11. Although fiction, each of the vignettes in Act of Valor is based on an actual operation and accurately depicts the tactics, equipment, intelligence and communications that allows America to bring appropriate force, sometimes incredible force, to any point on the planet. Additionally, this book accurately characterizes the operators that have total focus on the mission, but are also family men with wives and small children who also make amazing sacrifices to keep America safe, making do without their father's guidance and their husband's love for extended periods of time. The threat that their men may not return is a fear that the families must live with daily. Their loved one is literally on the tip of the spear. At the end of the movie there is a very powerful credit, listing all the SEAL operators who have lost their lives in the line of duty, keeping us safe, since 9/11.A must read for all Americans! George Orwell's quote, "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." has never been more true!!kwelch

First impressions are important. Surely former SEAL Dick Couch knows that modern HALO rigs don't have front mounted, attachable reserve chutes. Yet right there on page one he's got a jumpmaster lifting one during a prejump inspection. And on page 240--- certainly both authors (a SEAL and a helo pilot) know that a Knighthawk has wheels instead of skids. But otherwise I thought the book was great. And I'm glad I read it before I saw the movie. The movie was much easier to follow with the book in my memory bank. And I'm glad the movie had the "rubber duck" jump/boat SEAL delivery to the sub instead of the helo winch in the book. I imagine that the Somali pirate jump was the reason for that change. All in all,I'm glad I have the book in my library.

I like to rate the books I read on how difficult it is to put it down once you start reading. This one got high marks. The action throughout this book is awesome. I won't go into the plot as I'm sure other reviews already have, but the plot of this book is very realistic and the characters more real than most novels. Been a long time since I picked up a Clancy book written by someone else, having been burned before with a crap book. This one, however definately is worth the extra coin. I also read 2 other books called Seal Team Six 1 and 2, which are also very good, but not quite as good as this one.

So often in our daily routine, we forget that someone somewhere paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It's been said many times before that FREEDOM ISN'T FREE! We have an obligation to our fallen heroes to see that their loved ones are properly taken care of so that there isn't anytime where these families feel as if their loved ones have been forgotten.This book tells a story about our heroes and does an honorable job convying how these heroes go about doing what we take for granted, protecting America at all cost.God bless our military, God bless America.

My husband had read this book at the request of his therapist because of the trauma he endured during his childhood. He is male who was raped by his older sister from the age of two until he was thirteen and she married then moved away. She invited her girlfriends to participate as well. My husband was well into retirement before he got help for his nightmares and he wanted to understand why he felt anger so easily. Many parts of Olga's story he related to so I wanted to have a greater understanding myself. Thank you Olga for your courage.

I am so sorry for what u went thru. I had to put this book down so many x. I could not believe someone could do this to their child. My mother mentally touted me. I was the oldest girl in a family of 3 younger brothers. I was accused of everything that went wrong.It was always my fault, my mother took everything out on me. I started nursing school when I was 21. My mother started kicking me out of the house @ 13, I had to fend for myself. I worked,starting @ 13.she wasn't interested in my nursing school n neither were my brothers. I re when I got capped(it was a big show @a church, I had invited her-every time the door opened I looked to see if it was her-it wasn't. My graduation was 12/17/73 she was killed by a drunk driver on 12/16/73 I have no recollection of my graduation. I didn't even feel bad when she died. That's enough. This book brought all that up again after 46 year. It was very cathartic. God Bless You. I loved your book.

In the reading of this book I was horrified and mesmerized at the same time. How could someone possibly survive this inescapable abuse and humiliation year after year. But alas.......it is possible, and the author does a perfectly wonderful job of showing us just how she survived, and in that survival just how complex the human mind can be. Many people do not know about DID except from the movie Sybil. Many people do not accept that forgetting is possible. Olga was so clear and concise on just how her mind handled the overwhelming knowledge of being raped by her father and brothers, over and over. She showed us clearly just how she put things away piece by piece, leaving herself a massive puzzle that would take a great deal of effort and courage to try to resolve at a later day.That book will be with me forever, and is helping me to finally see and face my own puzzle called my life.Thank you Olga for your bravery at exposing something that is so deeply shaming, must of us would rather leave it buried till the day we day.Amazing!

I thought the book was very well written. Her story was so captivating yet painful almost to read. I really think the author did a great job showing how abuse or anything challenging can change people mentally in order for to cope. I think anyone suffering from anything should read her book. I really admire her and she seems very intelligent. I think if abuse was articulated in the way she does it, more often people would not feel afraid to talk about their own issues and these types of things would not be seen as taboo. I honestly feel like she opened up my eyes to a lot of issues in my life. This really was a good read that I stumbled on. She really met her purpose when she said she wanted to enlightened people about her condition. I really also believe making a movie out of this would be a good way to spread the word. Her tale of courage, bravery, sustenance,self belief, and the fact that I can tell she clearly has a special beautiful soul, is not something that only a few people should know about. A story like hers deserves to be shared. I sincerely believe this is the best money I have spent in a long time on something that has changed my life. This story actually penetrated my soul and spoke to my heart. It is a story I am very unlikely to forget. I also think she has great writing skills. I wonder if she ever tried writing fiction? :)

She endured horrific abuse at the hands of people that should have been trusted family members. This is an amazingly incredible, haunting read and one that I will surely never forget. Her memoir takes the reader from the depths of an emotional pit, one that you think she couldn't possibly survive, and she ends her book with an uplifting and final message of hope. From a healing standpoint, reading this book is quite possibly the best decision I have made.Olga's book details her life of abuse at the hands of her father, brothers and outside perpetrators and chronicles the events to present time. She endured a life of abuse, panic, agoraphobia and consequently DID. Olga has gone on to become an accomplished attorney, advocate and author.I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Olga recently and I can say that I am truly amazed and humbled at the person she has become as a result of abuse of this magnitude.Please, if you are an advocate for childhood abuse, a teacher, a parent or a survivor...this book is a must read. Thank you, Olga, for shedding light on this subject and educating us on DID. You are my hero.

Excellent and captivating. There are many graphic details about the child abuse that she experienced, both physical and sexual. A truly inspiring story of her journey of survival as well as her incredible commitment to healing through therapy. I had no problem finding such a book about Peru when there on the same trip.

The topics provide the reader with a broad introduction to Bolivia, setting the stage and offering resources for further research or extended travel to the country.The book is required reading for anyone planning a trip to Bolivia, or simply interested in an in-depth but enjoyable introduction to this resilient South American country.

While it does briefly discuss the geographical, topographical and, to a tiny degree, the ideological differences between Western Andean and Eastern Tropical Bolivia, the great majority of the book is about Western Bolivia, including most of the photos. Example: "there is little to do north and east of Santa Cruz..." made my jaw drop. Perhaps the author has never explored the many non-Jesuit towns, numerous tourist attractions and untold numbers of ecotours and natural areas in Eastern and Northern Santa Cruz, not to mention the hundreds of attractions, tours, towns, and natural sights in Bolivia's second largest department, Beni... but not having seen them does not mean they don't exist. In his defense, it's understandable. No Bolivian government to date has made any effort to ensure this vast region is known either.Like Bolivian governments of past and present, the author does Bolivia as a whole no justice by over-simplifying and minimizing the importance of Bolivia's fastest growing (and largest) city (Santa Cruz de la Sierra) and 2 largest departments (Santa Cruz and Beni). Santa Cruz alone provides nearly 40% of the country's gross national product and produces 64% of the country's food. Bolivia is typically described as an Andean country and it's indigenous people are also primarily described as Andean. Bolivia has 36 native cultures, each with their own language and territories. Over 30 of them are native to northern, eastern and southern Bolivia and have few similarities with the Aymara or Quechua who have been publicized for decades.Economically Eastern Bolivia was abandoned and ignored for nearly 500 years during which all the wealth of the country was invested in developing the Andean and central cities, especially La Paz and Cochabamba. It should not surprise anyone that Eastern Bolivia has a completely different economic and political ideology and market focus: the people of Eastern Bolivia have had to develop their region of the country (and have transformed it into the economic engine of the nation) through their own nearly unassisted efforts, entrepreneurship and creativity, private and personal funding, and a great deal of foreign investment with little to no investment of public funds by the government until just the past 20-30 years. This, not race or culture, is the primary basis for the political differences between the two regions.I expected a book called "Bolivia in Focus: A guide to Bolivia's people..." to focus on ALL of Bolivia's people. However, I give this book 2 stars for at least mentioning the two sides of Bolivia. Most don't even bother.

I found this short book to be an enlightening read. It presents Bolivia as an historically misgoverned nation and victim of the world economy. It is also strongly anti-American in its description of American policy regarding Bolivia. It is sympathetic to the current populist government.I read it more for the political content than anything else. Consult other reviews for a fuller picture.

This book has a great deal of information packed into a quick and informative read. Werner ties Bolivia's history into its physical and human geography, making sense of politics, economics and historical events through time and space. Full of themed maps and colorful images printed on high-quality glossy paper, the book is aesthetically pleasing as well as helpful to illustrating the geographic and social diversity of Bolivia. I enjoyed Bolivia in Focus and shared it with friends living in Bolivia because I appreciate the succinct historical context it provides.
