This low review has nothing to do with the content of the work itself, but with this particular copy of it. There are multiple errors throughout the book that make it seem like a print-to-order edition whose compiler copy and pasted out of Google Translate. If you just need a quick gist, this may be sufficient, but, if you really want to understand Freud and his theories, seek out the James Strachey editions (usually pulled out of the Standard Edition). There are some paperback reprints that are perfect. They're also worth the money.

If you are trying to make sense of your own psych then you are looking at the right book. In this book Freud analyzes the relationship between Ego and Id. Very informative and very useful. Must read.

I read this right after Intro to Psychoanalysis. I think it was a good supplement to show the further development of Freud's thought. I'm glad I read the intro first because there is some terminology he uses that I wouldn't have known. The book focuses on the id, ego, and superego and will give you a decent understanding of each of these.

Maybe my English skills are not into poetically advanced reading, but bro, I understand Sigmund Freud has a deep reputation in psychology, but he can't write if his life depended on it. His advanced choice of vocabulary coupled with his long run on sentences marks his writing impossible to comprehend. Felt like I was reading a horrible poem with no clue what what being discussed.UPDATE:I took another look at it. Its still very runon-ish, and kinda difficult to read, but its not that bad. Very interesting.

More people should read OG Freud.

Great Book

It's an okay book. Thanks - never too old to learn.

Good book, wish it was better quality paper back.

About the Author

Stan Rogers (1949-1983) was a gifted Canadian musician whose fame is known throughout the English-speaking world of folk music. He began his musical career as a teen, playing as a rock bassist, and then started writing songs about his Maritime roots, which were recorded on his first album, Fogarty’s Cove. He had a talent for writing about the Canadian experience – about the people who worked on farms, and in mines and fisheries across the country. He traveled frequently during the last years of his life and tragically died in an airline fire. The Canadian Conference of the Arts posthumously awarded Stan Rogers the Diplôme d’Honneur. The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals awarded him the Estelle Klein Lifetime Achievement Award, and SOCAN, a National Lifetime Achievement Award. Rogers’ music has been nominated twice for a Juno Award. The musical A Matter of Heart features Stan Rogers’ songs and stories, which continue to move people young and old.Matt James is a noted painter, illustrator and musician. If you for some unforgivable reason haven’t heard the great Stan Rogers’ baritone belt out the northwest passage then you’ve lived a life that is sadly void of true enduring happiness. I sing this song around the house so often my daughter started singing it too. Not because she likes it, but because she has no choice because she hears it multiple times per day (If my car steering wheel could roll it’s eyes it would right now because I’ve subjected it to many many more multiples of my rousing attempts at ‘The Northwest Passage’ but i digress). I think there’s actually a name for this (Stockholm syndrome). Anyways, if I told you I haven’t ever choked back tears listening to this song because it reminded me of sitting in the car on long drives with my dad I’d be a damned bald faced liar. Saying this song is special just doesn’t even come close. It’s got its own gravitational force. It creates its own life energy. I guess what I’m trying to say is that writing a book to accompany something that not only transcended folk art, but eclipsed metaphysics as we know it, well it’s a bold maneuver. But this book stands up and does a fine job. I bought this for my daughters 7th birthday and if it isn’t the most perfect gift that’s ever been offered by me I’ll be gosh darned.

Amazing voice and amazing artist...lost too soon to a jerk who needed to smoke in an airplane restroom. Funny, image evoking, tear jerking, excitement producing and history teacher...melded into one amazing performer.

nicely done

Northwest Passage is a 12 x 9 hardcover children's book that is illustrated by Matt James. Mr. James drew his inspiration for his book from the song "Northwest Passage," written by Canadian singer Stan Rogers. The song tells the story of Mr. Rogers longing to take the Northwest Passage (a route that started in Canada's section of the Arctic Ocean, went through the Pacific Ocean and ended in Asia). This was apparently a perilous journey that many men search and died for until it was finally completed in 1906 by Roald Amundsen. In this book we see Rogers driving a bus around and reflecting on his life and comparing it to the men who sought this passage before him. The illustration style in the book is not necessarily my favorite as it comes off a bit juvenile at times. The main flow of the book is also interrupted several times to give pages of background/history in tiny font. At the end of the book is Rogers song set to verse and a gallery of the Passage explorers, which I found most interesting of all. It's a clever book, but unless you are familiar with the song or the importance of the Northwest Passage, this book probably isn't for you.

Came across this at a friends house and loved it. It is essentially the Stan Rogers song mixed in with history about Franklin and Arctic exploration. I've read it more than my kids!

I wanted a book explaining the quest for the Northwest Passage. This book is based on an obscure Canadian folk song and a cross-Canada road trip by the folk singer's devoted fan (the author.)The background information that was presented was anti-technology and rah rah for Indians, the Knowers of All Things. Too much THE ARCTIC ICE IS ALL MELTING!!!!!!! nonsense and not enough about the exciting explorations. And Canada-centric.All of the listed explorers are British, no mention of the Perry expedition or, strangely, Matthew Henson, who lived with the Indians, spoke their language, and took their advice for a successful mission. Weird, since the book seems to be railing against the Franklin expedition as Ignorers of All-Knowing Indians..Anyway, I think I would love this more if I were Canadian. Maybe.I'm giving it an extra star for the interesting illustrations, but too many of them feature the author on a road trip. Who cares about the author OR the folk singer? I want a book about the Northwest Passage.

We purchased this book in the late 1980's. Our copy has long been without its dust cover. Its pages are dog eared and stained. It is by far the most used cookbook in our considerable cookbook library. Some of our favorites include Cajun Shepard's Pie, Dirty Rice, Blackened Redfish, Shrimp creole, Chicken Etouffee, Shrimp Etouffee, all the gumbos (gumbo as a way of cooking), Very Hot Cajun Sauce for Beef. It's true that it has fewer photos than cookbooks published today - but this book was published in 1984 when photos were much more expensive and hard to do. We've never needed them to produce incredible dishes from this book. At least in our early copy, the actual spice mixtures are spelled out for every recipe and this has been a great help. This book is absolutely unique. We have multiple other "Cajun" and "Creole" cookbooks, but none comes close to this one.

Excellent dishes and so very simple! Nothing in here is complicated at all, but the results are spectacular. Beginner cooks can make a masterpiece. I've had this for years and years, and the pages are beginning to fall out. I give this book as a gift to all of my American friends who come to visit and then get excited about our Louisiana cooking. We often have guests from out of state and we pull a couch into the kitchen and make an evening of enjoying the company and savoring the aroma while preparing the meal. Even the kids can't resist the smell coming out of the kitchen and they spend the evening watching the preperations, so our guests often have a good family evening together when we pull this book off of the shelf. These recipes will soon become family favorites even if you don't live in Louisiana.

I have hundreds of cookbooks but none more used than this one. I buy the cheap used books and give this one away all the time. Its the kind of cookbook that you just sit down and read from cover to cover. Even when I read a recipe I will never make I still learn something about cooking in doing so. I've served his recipes to many non-American friends and never found a person who didn't love it. I'm no chef but Paul will make you look like one by just doing what he says.

Bought my first copy when I got married in 1985. As a very poor student and nascent cook, Paul taught me how to put my foot in it and go! Bought a second copy a few years back to have at the beach as well. Absolutely spectacular cookbook for those who have or just love Southern garden staples and seafood. Perhaps because it was my first, this is my favorite of Paul Prudhomme's cookbooks. After all these years and cooking without other folks' recipes, it is still my favorite to refer to for Louisiana cooking. All time classic.

Love this cookbook, it is the best and easiest Cajun cooking book around for authentic flavor of Louisiana.. Chef Paul is the best and his dishes although not low fat, his flavor combinations cannot be beat in my eyes. .

You will wear out this book until it falls to pieces and the food stained remnants no longer resemble a book. I'm on my third copy and have taken to re-writing them on paper for kitchen use. Many other reviewers have stated this, but it can't be said enough - follow the directions exactly, no matter how incredulous you may be (and on some recipes you will be). It always works out. THAT SAID, there are a few recipes that to my tastes (and probably 99% of other people on this Earth) that have far too much oil. I noted them - well, at least the ones I've tried - at the bottom of my review.Although I grew up in New Orleans and continue to live there, my parents passed no cooking skills on to me worth mentioning, as they, like most New Orleanians who are not professional cooks, only knew how to make a few things well and never wrote anything down. After a few years of being unsuccessful learning to cook from books that were not meant for learners, I finally bought this one in the early 1990's. This book will teach you how to cook, so long as you let it. Follow the directions. No substitutions. The amount of work that went into testing these recipes must have been daunting, especially with regard to seasoning. This book isn't just for Gulf South dwellers. There are a great many recipes here that can be made anywhere in the world; for the seafood oriented ones, you're probably out of luck.Another note: please do use parboiled rice in Louisiana dishes. Stop calling it "processed" - it isn't any more processed than any other rice. All it means is that the husk has been blown off with steam rather than mechanical threshing. It retains the bran this way and the grains make perfect al dente rice. I personally like Zatarain's, but any will do.Some of my personal favorites -Crawfish Etoufée - this version is made with roux, which is not a common way to make it in New Orleans. It's one of those you think couldn't possibly turn out right, but it is sublime. This was my favorite dish in the world as a child and continues to be in my top ten! This is the best version I've ever tasted.Turtle Soup - One of the best recipes in this book, and the best turtle soup I've ever had (and I've eaten plenty of turtle soups around town).Shrimp Diane - shrimp and butter with mushrooms. Delicious over pasta.Barbecued Shrimp - Whole, head on shrimp broiled in butter with black pepper, rosemary, etc. Remember to snip the antennae, eyes and horn off the shrimp's face before cooking them. The antennae will make a gross mess in your pot. You're welcome for this advice. Don't eat this more than once a year if you want to live past 40. This is one of the best versions I've ever had.Shrimp, Chicken or Rabbit Sauce Piquant - VERY hot. If you can eat very spicy Asian food, you will be fine with it. If you want to make a less hot version, make shrimp creole instead.Seafood Stuffed Shrimp - A royal pain to make, but worth it! I like to make this with his Shrimp and Crabmeat butter cream sauce.Cajun Prime RibCajun MeatloafChicken Curry - doesn't taste anything like an proper Asian curry, but is delicious anyway. This has actually been a traditional New Orleans dish for a long time, although out of fashion now, it was very popular in the 1940's - 1970's. Made with a great deal of butter and fruit (raisins, apples, coconut and bananas here) and very spicy.Sticky ChickenCorn Maque Choux - this is a delicious version which is sweet. It isn't commonly made like this in Louisiana, but I like this one better than the normal, savory way with tomatoes.Potato Salad/Green Onion Salad Dressing - I'm not kidding. Make this.Gumbos - all of them. Especially Seafood, but all of them are excellent.Jambalaya - all of them, except the ones where he wants to put oysters in them. No one puts oysters in jambalaya down here, and I find it very weird and off putting, and I don't think it really works. Just my opinion.Roast Pork Loin - GODNow for some of the ones I don't care for, or rather just don't work for me. The big man, as much as I love him, has Cajunified these particular New Orleans classics with too much oil -Stuffed Merliton - this version is somewhat greasy and I don't think the sauce does much for it. The merlitons (chayote squash) Americans find in the store are about 1/4 the size of the ones grown here, which also have spiny, husky skins which stuff well. The store bought ones from Central America aren't big enough, so don't try them. That said you can make a casserole version of this with them, but there are better recipes.Red Beans and Rice - way too greasy with those ham hocks. The seasoning is just right though. You could make this same recipe, except sautéing the trinity with seasoning first, then adding to the pot of boiling water (better: ham stock) with a smoked ham shank. Do away with the ham hocks and use a equal amount of pickled pork shoulder meat as you do beans. Pickled pork is a must in red beans for most New Orleanians.Oyster Dressing - too much oil! Yikes.Chicken Big Mamou (not a New Orleans dish) - too much butter again.

Because, although I've bought a few others by a certain well-known New Orleans chef, this is the best, most authentic cookbook for the region. Simple ingredients and no frou-frou!

I am a chef, and this book is THE Bible of Creole/Cajun, or as it's now called Southern Louisiana cooking. Wonderful book, now in about it's 80th printing! I use it all the time.I truly consider this book one of the best cookbooks ever from the USA. It ranks up there with "The Joy of Cooking" and "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" as classics, or standards that all serious cooks need to have in their library. Many people think that New Orleans has the best food in America, and Paul is without a doubt one of the best New Orleans cooks. If you want to explore one of the only true American cuisines, this book is a must.As a hint for those worried about the 'heat' levels in some of these foods, do what professional chef's do: Simply start with 1/4 the amount of 'hot' ingredients when you make a recipe. You can always add more heat if you want it, but you can't take it out!Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Talking a tour through this book is every bit as exciting as exploring new realms. Ms. Bourley had carefully considered her career options and among them were astronaut. Then her focus (literally!) took an unexpected turn. She discovered the depths in the ordinary that surround us. Her travels far, far into inner worlds are amazing and truly uplifting. To see the symmetry and beauty of such teensy tiny wholly seperate beings and things is to speak to the wondrous possibilities of the simple (and even inspirational) joys in seeing not totally unfamiliar patterning on such a miniscule scale. I come away thinking "everything is significant.". The calm in that is worth the price of admission. Along the same lines is a movie entitled "Microcosms". I suggest you look for it. You'll like that, too.

As a physicist (by profession), and amateur photographer (in my free time) I must say that I have *never* encountered a finer example of a synergy of art and science (not to mention philosophy) displayed than what awaits the lucky reader who purchases this extraordinary book. Some of the images, on a purely aesthetic level, rank (in my humble opinion) with some of the great abstract photographs that have **ever** been taken! Indeed, I am tempted to equate what Dr. Bourely has accomplished here to what Ansel Adams accomplished for the American West with his magnificent large format photography. What Adams represents for the macroscopic world, Dr. Bourely represents for the microscopic one. She is *that* good...as a guide, as a scientist, as photographer, and as a visionary.Quite simply this is one of the most beautiful books I've ever had the pleasure of owning and I shall treasure it for a long, long time to come. If you love photography, or science, or abstraction, or philosophy, or ever simply marvel at the ineffable mystery we call the universe, you owe it to yourself to get this book. It is destined to be a classic.

I saw this book for the first time on a clearance rack. I picked it up and must have spent 20-30 minutes in complete awe. I didn't have my wallet so I left without buying it and came back the next day. Gone. I spent the next 2 years looking for it (couldn't remember the name). 30 book stores. Countless hours online searching. Finally found it at Hennessy and Ingells in Santa Monica. Worth every minute. It really might be the most incredible photographic odyssey I've ever seen. It's just an absolutely brilliant piece of art. Hard to imagine how spectacular it is without seeing it. Stunning. Simply stunning.

thanks

The author does a good job of covering the development of technologies that allowed cheese to be stored for long periods and shipped easily but does not provide much coverage of culinary aspects of cheese. In this book, history starts in the Middle East and then moves West and North, eventually going to England and the USA. We do learn that ancient peoples used grated cheese in cakes and wine but we don't learn how subsequent people ate cheese. The focus on cheese production and commerce is so strong that the reader can come away with the impression that Gouda and Edam cheeses differ principally in their coatings. The history ends at the beginning of the 20th Century with a discussion of Cheddar Cheese production in the USA and a discussion of recent trade disputes between the USA and the EU and safety issues.Lots of topics were left out. Geographical coverage is limited. Most European countries, Latin America, and the non-ancient Middle Eastern countries do not get mentioned (India is briefly mentioned). Products like cottage cheese that don't keep long don't get much attention. How cheese was used in recipes was not mentioned. To be fair I did learn some interesting things. For example, some ancient religions expected cheese tithes. Ancient Roman soldiers got cheese rations.

One of my favorite books I have read about food and history. I appreciated Professor Kindstedt's approach to writing. This is not pop history; it is the real deal. He artfully tells an expansive global history with cheese as the leitmotif, touching on everything from empire building, to the gendered and classed history of food making to industrialization and globalization. As a graduate with a degree in history as well as a serious lover of cheese, I found this book a joy to read from beginning to end.

It's the type of book where you skip around on reading it, as you may want to know about one cheese or the other. You would not read it from front to back. You would keep it with your cookbooks rather than story books. It would be handy then to take out and do research.

Many excellent things in this book, but suffered from too much detail in places and too little in others. A good introduction.

Not quite at the popular level, this a good history of something I think we don't even think of. That the history is so long was the surprise to me.

A lot of history into cheese making and its ties to historical events. It covered how various cheeses evolved into different types and why.

This is the 'must have' reference book for Cheese lovers and /or anyone involved in the Cheese industry. Paul Kindstedt's scholarship is authoritative yet accessible. With the skill of a raconteur, he unfolds the place of cheese through thousands of years and many civilisations. I felt bereft when I finished this wonderful book - I wanted to hear even move.

This book was OK, not great. I had hoped that this book would be to cheese what the book Salt was to ... well...salt, but it was a big let down.First, it is really dry in the beginning the author did not do a very good job of telling a story. I was actually warned by others that this book was dry, but I said it was OK because I liked dry cheese. :-) He basically just wrote down facts. He didn't breath any life into the subject, I know several people who gave up on the book at this point. You have to get through the first 50 or 60 pages before the book gets interesting. In addition, his Christian beliefs just permeated the book which really distracted from the subject. The author seems to focus almost the first half of the book on the Middle East. So much was spent just on Israel when I am sure that there was a lot to discussed in other parts of world in relation to cheese. I suspect that he has a great deal of interest in that part of the world because of his obvious beliefs. Most chapters open with Bible quotes or quotes from Christians in history. Whenever he could think of the thinest execuse to go into long, and at times tedious detail, of Christianity he would do so for pages. At one point he even works in a discussion of gnosticism!!! A good editor should have cut a lot of this. Please do not misunderstand me, I don't have anything against Christianity, but it was really a stretch to be so focused on Christianity in a book about cheese. If I want to read about Christianity, I will get a book on that subject. I wanted to read a book on Cheese. I mean rather than use all those pages discussing religion, it would have been great to read a discussion on cheese. He could have developed a better discussion on the various tyes and production methods. There was so much more that could have been said about the cultural impact. All this was undeveloped.Although I was very disappointed in the book, I still think it was worth reading. I just wish the author did a better job in sticking to the subject and really developing a good story about cheese.

Review

“The real-life stories of wrestlers have proven great literary fodder, and this memoir-biography of wrestling’s greatest heel confronting his demons is one of the subgenre’s best.” —National Post“[W]hile the plethora of stories and information about his impressive in-ring career and time in the spotlight should be more than enough to satisfy wrestling aficionados, Rowdy also chronicles Piper’s rough-and-tumble early days growing up in Winnipeg and other parts of Canada. . . . [T]he book also shows a softer side.” —Calgary Herald“[This] revealing but touching biography . . . completes the record of a man fans just loved to hate, and to whom they hated to say goodbye.” —Miami Herald

I had the pleasure of meeting Roddy Piper exactly two weeks before he passed away at what would be his final autograph signing. I have met many wrestlers, many celebrities but Roddy was by far the nicest. He started asking me questioned. How was things going, how was the family doing. It was like we were long lost friends reuniting. Had him sign his DVD and he went into details about certain matches. Got ready to use my then new cell phone for a selfie and it wasn't working. He told me take your time, I have all day. I want you to get the best picture. I was told that even after his signing he went across the street to a local fire hall and posed for some photos. Two weeks later he was gone. I am still in shock and I feel so bad for his family because I know he was so close to them and found out that even more after reading this book that his kids completed. Roddy was a wrestling icon, a talented actor, a loving father and husband and I can tell you he treated his fans like they were his friends.

This is the second book written by Roddy Piper or his family. The first was far less satisfying than this book.Written not long after Piper passed away, his son and daughter wrote a far more real picture of Piper the man than the first book did. We get to look at his difficult upbringing and the tough life that he endured before becoming a wrestler. At this point, life remained hard with long trips on the road, little money and lots of beatings in the ring while he mastered his craft and gained the respect of the older more established wrestling talent.Once Piper was a star, he never looked back in wrestling, he was the number one bad guy in the WWF in the 1980's and perhaps ever. Outside of the ring, things were different. Personal demons were affecting him and he tried to beat them by taking loads of drugs and drinking heavily.Eventually the years of ring wars affected his body to the point that he took a break from the ring in 1987 to pursue an acting career. This was successful to the point of one great film (They LIve) but through various reasons, he never reached the fullest potential. This is a very honest and enjoyable book looking at the life of a true wrestling icon, someone who lived his life to the fullest and left a legacy that will endure. All too often biographies are filled with countless tales of sporting contests and anecdotes from outside of the ring but lack that personal touch of looking at the subject at home. This book gives us a picture of the real Roderick Toombs.

Great book for any real Wrestling fan. Best part about it is that it isn't only about the man himself, but also a bit of his children's point of view. Must buy for any true fan of wrestling!

If you're a fan of Roddy Piper chances are you've heard at least a few of the stories in this book. But there's still plenty there for even the most die hard fans. You get the real stories behind a lot of the myth he created for himself and told so many times we just thought they were the real deal. Sadly the book had to be largely completed by his children but I think that actually ended up giving a little more insight into the real person he was behind the wrestling persona, and he may have played down some of those aspects out of modesty had he finished the book like he'd intended.

Arrived on time and in great condition. A special thanks to the family of Rowdy Roddy Piper for finishing the journey that he started and for telling his story in such detail. I have been a fan of Hot Rods all of his career even when I was supposed to be booing and hating him. He was the one wrestler that I always wanted to meet and now will sadly never have the chance to. His first book "In the Pit With Piper" was a great read and a recounting of Roddy's life and career from his point of view. This book however pulls even fewer punches about his life and career and is rich with commentary about him from those who knew him the best and loved him the most. Give it a read, you will not be disappointed.

What an incredible book. Started by Roddy and finished by his children. Great stories that were never told before are great to read. He was a true legend that started it all and his legacy still lives on. Highly recommended!!

This is a very well written biography of one of my favorite wrestlers. It brings his personality to life on the pages. His children did an excellent job. I have no complaints. He was an interesting person to listen to. I find a lot of pro wrestlers to be kind of boring, kind of the same as each other. Not so with Roddy Piper. He is an original. I use present tense, not past tense, because I believe in an afterlife.

A great book about the legendary wrestler, actor, personality Roderick Toombs better known by his ring name: Rowdy Roddy Piper. A very interesting read as we go into the life story of one of the most entertaining people in both wrestling and the entertainment industry. Contains life stories that will tell you what made Roddy such an interesting individual! :)

Her Body, Our Laws: On the Front Lines of the Abortion War, from El Salvador to Oklahoma, by Michelle Oberman

Review

“A brief but sensible entry in the abortion wars.”—Kirkus Reviews“For anyone interested in a fresh, balanced perspective on abortion law and women’s rights.”—Library Journal, Starred Review“Drawing on her fascinating journeys into the abortion-hostile territories of El Salvador and Oklahoma, Oberman gives a penetrating analysis of both the power and limitations of laws governing abortion. This beautifully written and thought-provoking book offers the reader a novel way to consider the endless abortion conflict in the United States and elsewhere.”—Carole Joffe, author of Dispatches from the Abortion Wars: The Costs of Fanaticism to Doctors, Patients, and the Rest of Us“Oberman shows us that that in the midst of war, there is always space for listening. In her global journey through abortion laws and ideology, she brings us back to what really matters: sharing stories that help us recognize our common humanity. In our time of increasing polarization and politicization, Her Body, Our Laws demands a new path forward on abortion, one rooted in the difficult conversations we need to help us connect across our differences.”—Aspen Baker, author of Pro-Voice: How to Keep Listening When the World Wants a Fight and founder of Exhale“This is a splendid and important book. Oberman brings a legal scholar’s attention to analysis of the abortion wars, along with a powerful gift for telling the stories of those intimately involved. In so doing, she illuminates not only what is at stake in our debates about abortion law but also what is missing from them.”—Debra Satz, the Marta Sutton Weeks Professor of Philosophy, Stanford University“Oberman lays bare the messy and paradoxical realities of abortion that churn beneath the reductive debate over its legality. Stories gathered across borders and decades depict lofty ideals of morality and choice trampled by concrete oppressive conditions far more compelling than the letter of the law. As she astutely observes, abortion’s legal status matters little to those robbed by structural inequalities of dignity and volition in their reproductive experiences.”—Jill E. Adams, founding executive director, Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice, University of California–Berkeley School of Law

A major breakthrough in women’s reproductive freedom has been brilliantly described and documented in only 174 pages! The author, a lawyer and keen social scientist, personally travelled to the places to do her research with first hand interviews with her subjects. Thus the reader almost feels as though being there on the ground. She asks questions but is ever respectful of the opinions of others which are frequently at odds with hers. The bottom line: this powerful book makes clear to any reader that obtaining an abortion due to safe drugs gives huge numbers of women worldwide the option of deciding when pregnant whether or not to carry the fetus to term! This is a massive potential step forward for freedom from religious intrusion into a decision which should be a woman’s solely!!This new capacity of women worldwide to deal with unwanted pregnancies represents a breakthrough comparable to the famous Pill. However, in carefully reading the book, I found it regrettable that this serious social scientist did not insert a strong call for expanded use of contraceptives, which would substantially prevent the need for abortions. Since half the births in the USA are unplanned, provision of more birth control knowledge is obviously needed.

"What happens when you make abortion illegal?" Beautiful, limpid prose about a contentious subject. Law professor Oberman carefully supports an interesting thesis: that abortion law is actually largely beside the point in the debate over abortion rights and morality. She examines the lives and motivations of women who choose abortion and presents the data showing that abortion bans have next-to-no effect on actual abortion rates, and only a hypothetical effect on women's reproductive decisions. Oberman interviewed women, policy influencers, and lawmakers all over the abortion divide, and makes a brilliant argument: that women make decisions about pregnancy and abortion based on a rigorous cost analysis. She examines the law and public policy that make abortion an easier choice for the most marginal women. The most impressive thing about Oberman's book is that she took the time to meet, speak with, and understand those on the other side of the divide over choice in America, and found much to admire and agree with. This book gave me hope that if more people read her book, we might begin to quit shouting at one another across the ideological divide, look at the data, and begin addressing the actual sources of the reproductive wars.

The most informative book regarding abortion, and the exceedingly dangerous things that will happen if a certain group of delirious fanatics get their way: overturning the Supreme Court's decision in "Roe vs. Wade" [January 22, 1973), and the methods which sensible citizens can take to prevent this from happening. If it does happen...well, no one - even those who were responsible for getting it overturned - will NOT like what follows. There will be a "domino effect" that they - foolishly - did not see coming. (Can you say "Fascist State?")

Looking for a good book about abortion politics in the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court? If you haven’t seen it already, I would recommend Michelle Oberman’s book, Her Body, Our Laws: On the Front Lines of the Abortion War from El Salvador to Oklahoma. The book is eminently readable, relevant, and now available in an inexpensive paperback edition. Oberman is a legal scholar with a social scientist’s data-driven sensibility and sensitivity. She interviewed women in El Salvador who suffered heart-wrenching reproductive tragedies and were then persecuted, convicted, and jailed for allegedly provoking abortion (which is totally illegal in El Salvador). Oberman then moves to Oklahoma to ask a pointed and pertinent question: what will actually happen if abortion is outlawed? She cuts past the questions about morality and religion to explain what will happen, concretely, if and when the courts ban abortion. As you know, we are now closer to that possibility than we’ve been in a long time. I would absolutely recommend this book for use with smart, engaged undergraduates; Oberman’s writing is crisp and her message is fresh, timely, and petrifying.

Michelle Oberman thoughtfully answers the question "What would happen if abortion was banned in the United States." Worth reading!
