A book and a message that changed my life years ago. It's been sad to read "christians" tear down this message, trying to hyper-critique the ways John shares stories from the Bible or how he speaks to men. Men all over the world found freedom to be themselves in their experience and relationship with God, to begin to actually walk with God, hear His voice and know His heart. I know men all over the U.S. who began to rise up to love their wives, find their calling, engage the lives of their kids, and begin to love the life God has given them and live it well! And thousands of families have also experienced so much good because of this.If you're the type that feels it's your god-given duty to scour the texts of books to find all "the errors" and expose "heresy", I'm sure you can (or already have) gleefully torn away at John's message. But, honestly, I ask, "Really? Why not just become an IRS agent instead?" And, I say, "Get a life." Sincerely, I say, go get a life that worth's living! Stop hiding behind your computer or your pulpit or your religious duties or your secret addictions and find the wide open spaces of life!The message of WAH, both in the book and in the retreats Ransomed Heart put on based on this message was an invitation for me to experience God in ways I never thought possible and to experience life in its fullness in ways I never thought possible. And not only was it an invitation, it was permission to finally live my life. Maybe that doesn't make sense to many, but it was a game-changer for me. After returning from a WAH retreat, my wife literally said to me, "What happened? You even look different." My life will never be the same. Nor will the life of my wife and my children.

I am not surprised there was a lot of negative feedback on the topics expressed in this little book. In these times it is no longer valid to use gender to explain why you may like or dislike certain things. This book is not meant only for the jock, or the outdoorsman. It is meant for the heart that yearns to find ways to express a passion that may seem wrong for a Christian man, and that's really it.There are many opinions on how we should behave, or more recently that we do not behave as men have in the past. It is true we are meant to be adventurous and a bit wild but that is a different thing for each man, not a template- the author was simply expressing it as he himself saw it. It is up to you to find your passion, your wild side, and break free of the life you may mistakenly think is correct as a follower of the Way of God. But there are many different paths, as long as we stay on that straight and narrow one, neither turning to the left or the right- being obedient, faithful. I would say if it doesn't trouble your spirit, go for it! The only opinion that matters is Gods, not mans.I myself do many things that aren't considered manly yet also do things that are over the top! For example, I write poetry, rescue ladybugs, read about decorating and color and style, and tear up over emotional things- I am sentimental, and I try to show empathy to others at all times. I also carry a concealed firearm, practice Tang Soo Do and Krav Maga, and regularly work out with weaponry such as knives and sticks- and I am trying to learn Iado, the Way of drawing and cutting with the katana. I love long walks, but I don't watch sports, and can't tell you anything about any team. I don't bunjee dive or shoot down the rapids or any of that, but I see it as valid. Again, if it doesn't become the end in itself it is all up to that old thing we used to call conviction- the Holy Spirit will tell you it isn't something you should do. It isn't nerds vs. jocks, or the cultured, educated man vs the uneducated manual laborer. (I work in a factory, and that is because I chose to work with my hands after spending half my life working in the Mental Health field.) We are all part of the body- and scripture says no particular part is favored above the other. So embrace your inner wild man and push your boundaries a little bit! For some of us it isn't much or very daring, but it is enough to inspire the soul.

If you want to write a book about what you feel to be true, that's one thing, but when you bend, distort and flat out lie about what the Word of God says to back your belief, well then expect to be judged by God's Word.If that's the case this book is heretical at best.It seems like throughout this book the author is trying too hard to make up for some lack of machismo he thinks he needs.I actually watched one of the Wild at Heart Bootcamp sessions where John Eldredge makes fun of Mister Rogers and insinuates Fred Rogers is not a "real" man.So in this book and others authored by Eldredge, he sets out to show what a "real man" he is by climbing mountains, hunting bear, tracking elk, blah, blah, blah.....Like any good poker player knows, you always portray just the opposite of what you are.Read 'em and weep:)

Borrowed this book from My Pastor. It was really the only authoritative source to look for not only the biblical insight that's needed for a preacher, but real world examples that are shared from experience behind the pulpit. It is a call you receive from God alone, with skills you craft from those who have walked out before you. I'm thankful for resources like this that don't sugar coat or water down the accountability a shepherd has to his flock and to his God.

It's as honest as it gets for preaching. Good structural advice, excellent preparation skill building and enough God in it to keep the pressure off without letting those who would preach off the hook. I read this every couple years just to learn how to better communicate in my day to day, much less a pulpit, book writing, devotional or anything else I might be called to.

This is the first book about preaching that I have ever read and because of the work of the Holy Spirit through Pastor Robinson by this book, I was able to deliver my first sermon with some semblance of boldness. Thank you for submitting to God by writing this great work. This book met me right where I am as a seminary student: academically, mentally, theologically, but most importantly spiritually. This book is comprehensive in that it covers most of what you think or would not even first think preaching involves. The most important thing is that Robinson spends the most time on the things that matter most, the spiritual preparation of the preacher and getting the meaning of the text right (to name a few)! Thankfully, his emphasis on the things that matter does not mean that he neglects other elements of preaching. He spends time on voice, dress, gesturing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was even prompted to have some devotional time with The Lord after some of the readings.

Haddon Robinson presents one of the evangelical classics on preaching. The work represents the sum total of the traditional methods of homiletics and does it in a manner that will resonate with many expository preachers. For the most part, the work introduces little new information, but certainly does an excellent job repackaging the material for the modern expositor. Some of the new topics include the concept of a inductive message, which is still quite new for most preachers in conservative circles. Another helpful item in this work is its structure. The structure of the entire book is designed to give the expositor a number of stages to mark the progression from the text to the sermon. As a helpful secondary source, I would also recommend Bryan Chapell's Christ-Centered Preaching: Redeeming the Expository Sermon.

Introduction"In this book, I pass on a method to those learning to preach or to experienced people who want to brush up on the basics" (14). So says Dr. Haddon Robinson as he offers this second edition of this classic volume known as Biblical Preaching: The Development and Delivery of Expository Messages. Though first published in 1980, this work is still a staple in homiletics departments and pastors' studies across the world.Robinson received his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois and serves as the Harold John Ockenga Distinguished Professor of Preaching at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Prior to this position, he served as president and professor of homiletics at Denver Seminary after teaching homiletics at Dallas Theological Seminary for nineteen years.SummaryChapter One, entitled "The Case for Expository Preaching," Robinson begins by saying, "This is a book about expository preaching, but it may have been written for a depressed market." In this chapter, Robinson shows the lack of regard for expository preaching in evangelical circles, then outlines the church's need for this manner of preaching and exactly what expository preaching is. Chapter Two, entitled "What's the Big Idea?" displays the importance of an expositor to mine out one main concept or idea. He defines an idea as something which "enables us to see what was previously unclear" (39). He also notes that "an idea begins in the mind when things ordinarily separated come together to form unity that either did not exist before or was not recognized previously" (39).In Chapter Three, entitled "Tools of the Trade," Robinson introduces three stages in preparing expository sermons: "choosing the passage to be preached" (53), studying the passage and gathering the notes (58), then proceeding to "relate the parts to each other to determine the exegetical idea and its development" (66). Chapter Four, entitled "The Road from Text to Sermon," includes stage four which is "analyzing the exegetical idea" (75).In Chapter Five, entitled "The Arrow and the Target," Robinson covers stages five and six in the development of expository preaching: "Formulating the Homiletical Idea" in which he encourages preachers to state their exegetical idea in "the most exact, memorable sentence possible" (103); and determining the purpose for the sermon. "A purpose differs from a sermon idea, therefore, in the same way that a target differs from the arrow; as taking a trip differs from studying a map; as baking a pie differs from reading a recipe" (107).In Chapter Six, entitled, "The Shapes Sermons Take," Robinson helps the preacher decide how to accomplish the purpose of the sermon as well as outlining the sermon (stages seven and eight, respectively). Chapter Seven addresses filling in the sermon outline and, as Robinson states in his title, "making dry bones live" (139). Chapter Eight has the provocative title, "Start with a Band and Quit All Over," which deals with the preparation of introductions and conclusions.Chapter Nine, entitled, "The Dress of Thought," Robinson notes, "Gift or not, we must use words, and the only question is whether we will use them poorly or well" (184). He helps the preacher in areas such as transitions, clarity of thought, developing a personal style, and the use of metaphors. The last chapter, "How to Preach So People Will Listen," deals with the delivery of the sermon itself. Robinson says that sermons "live only when they are preached. A sermon ineptly delivered arrives stillborn" (201).Critical AnalysisWith engaging writing and timely humor, Robinson seeks to communicate one prominent theme: "expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept" (35). Even though one would be more persuaded by his thoughts had he served more in the preaching ministry of a local church (he served at Dallas Youth for Christ from 1952-55, then as Associate Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Medford, Oregon from 1956-19581), his principles of preparing and preaching expository sermons are tremendous and will serve the Church of Jesus Christ and his ministers very well indeed.One of the strengths of this work is its pastoral nature. Preachers are not called to be lecturers and are not simply called to preach the Word of God. Preachers are called to preach the Word of God to God's people. Robinson rightly observes that "we must preach to a world addressed by the TV commentator, the newspaper columnist, and the playwright" (29). In the Preface to the Second Edition, Robinson notes how the culture has changed since 1980 when this work was first published. "Television and the computer have influenced the ways we learn and think. Narrative preaching has come into vogue and reflects the reality that listeners in a television culture think with pictures in their heads" (10). While he may go too far in giving room for narrative preaching, he rightly assesses 21st century culture. This culture is the world in which the expositor preaches. So not only does Robinson note that "as shepherds, we relate to the hurts, cries, and fears of our flocks," we must also understand the external issues to which our people are exposed every hour of every day.Along with this area of pastoral ministry in connection with preaching, Robinson also gives more room to the role and responsibility of the listener. He notes: Expositors may be respected for their exegetical abilities and their diligent preparation, but these qualities do not transform any of them into a Protestant pope who speaks ex cathedra. Listeners also have a responsibility to match the sermon to the biblical text. As Henry David Thoreau wrote, "It takes two to speak the truth -- one to speak, and another to hear." ... If a congregation is to grow, it must share the struggle (24).Robinson notes that the average listener in the pew hopes you will answer this one question: "So what? What difference does it make" (86)? Before this question is in the congregants' hearts, this question must be answered in the study as he asks, "Exactly what is the biblical writer talking about (66)?" The shared struggle starts with the preacher in the study as he wrestles with God to find out his intended meaning.Another strength in this work is the engaging humor Robinson employs in this volume. While many would consider reading a book on expositional preaching boring (even some preachers may feel this way!), Robinson's use of humor helps hook the reader in order that the reader may approach this material with ease. This example, though mentioned earlier, stands as a great example of opening up the very first chapter with humor: "This is a book about preaching, but it may have been written for a depressed market" (17). In the preface to the first edition, he makes this observation: If I can claim any qualification, it is this: I am a good listener. During two decades in the classroom I have evaluated nearly six thousand student sermons. My friends marvel that after listening to hundreds of fledgling preachers stumble through their first sermons, I am not an atheist (14).In another example after he acknowledges his debt to all who have influenced his thinking on expositional preaching, he closes the paragraph by noting, "Since all of these and others influenced me deeply, it is only fair that for weaknesses in this volume they should shoulder a large share of the blame" (15)! This brand of humor disarms the critic and relaxes those who initially approach the topic of expository preaching with any misgivings or fears.One weakness is a quote located in the Preface to the Second Edition about his view of women ministers, a view which has changed since his first edition in 1980. He notes: I've also changed my language to reflect my theology. God doesn't distribute gifts by gender. Both women and men have the ability and the responsibility to communicate God's Word. I have always believed that, but the language in my first book reflected a distinct male bias. . . . In this revision I hope I have demonstrated the fruits of my repentance (10).Robinson's theology is on display when, in an explanation of how our outlines should have development, he plays the part of a listener who asks of the preacher, "What evidence does she have for that statement" (140)? Here again he opens the door for us to peer into his theological framework which allows for women ministers. If Robinson had titled this book, "Biblical Teaching," then the reader would understand the necessity for this revision. Many men and women in our churches teach, but the New Testament sets parameters on who teaches whom and where (1 Corinthians 14:33-35, 1 Timothy 2:11-13). For twenty-seven years however, this book has borne the title, "Biblical Preaching." When Robinson notes that the theology he has is "my theology," this reviewer is troubled by the use of the `my.' For someone who claims to look to authorial intent, the description of his views seems too self-centered. This reviewer believes that his theology has strayed in this area from Scripture.ConclusionRobinson excels in bringing a topic which many would deem dry and gives it life by coupling his extensive homiletical and hermeneutical knowledge with picturesque wit. Aside from the one weakness mentioned above, this book is a must-read for every pastor and aspiring preacher of the Gospel.

These stages include: selecting and studying the passage, discovering and analyzing the exegetical idea, formulating the homiletical idea, determining the sermon's purpose, deciding how to accomplish this purpose, outlining the message, filling in the sermon outline, and preparing the introduction and conclusion. Robinson's ten-stage process is filled with valuable information and pithy insights. "Biblical Preaching" is a concise but fairly comprehensive guide to preparing an effective message from start to finish. The book provides an opportunity to learn from one of the great expositors of our time. For a more thorough study of the art and science of expository preaching I recommend "Power in the Pulpit" by Jerry Vines. In my mind, these are the two best expository preaching books I've had the pleasure of reading.

There's a ton of laminating & cutting involved with these but they're worth the effort. My kindergarten class loves them when they use them as independent work centers.

I am a K SEI teacher, so my kids are very low to start. I use this with my very very high kids, and plan to use more at the end of the year. Right now, this is way too high for most of my kids.

I bought these for below grade level second graders and am very pleased. They work very well for these kids for independent work while still teaching valuable skills.

Nothing special. From the sites to see in the area of the country where I live, Florida and the southeastern US, this book simply hits the well known areas and doesn't venture off the well-trodden path of most tourists. I was looking for something that didn't tell me what I already knew or could find in most any travel book. Consequently, I expect the same treatment of places I'm not as familiar with. I was hoping for something more unique.

I received this book as a retirement present and since then I've given it to others when they retire. Very helpful to refer to when travelling in the US. We used the information on our trip to Florida last winter and the recommendations were 'spot on'. We got to see things that we normally would not have selected to do. Enjoyed seeing every recommendation.

I flipped through the first edition many years ago, and had a good laugh at how many expensive hotels and restaurants were counted among the 1000 places. In the second edition, Schultz has attempted to rectify this problem by merging many of these places into a single city or region. However, the merging is not done consistently. Some cities, such as London and New York, are now listed as only one item in Schultz's list, with individual landmarks and sites listed within each entry. Other cities, however, are still spread out over multiple entries, like in the first book. For example, Dublin covers 3 entries (Edible, Historical, and Literary Dublin), and Shanghai covers 2 entries (The Bund and the Shanghai Museum). Milan covers 4. Some countries are also organized in the wrong section - Greece and Cyprus are in the Western Europe part of the book, between Germany and Italy.The other problem with the book is the lack of balance in covering the different regions of the world. The back cover informs the reader that 28 new countries have been added compared to the first edition, which is an improvement, but some regions are still very much over/under-represented relative to others. Britain and Ireland (0.2% of the world's land area and 1% of the world population) together take up 74 entries in the book. In comparison, India and China, which are much larger countries with greater geographical diversity, longer history, and far more UNESCO world heritage sites, only get 40 entries in the book - combined. I'm sure that all of the places recommended in the book for Britain and Ireland are wonderful places worthy of visit, but when making a list that's supposed to cover the entire world, the author needs to pay special attention to fairly representing every country and region of the world.Finally, the snobbishness is still present in spades. Schultz continues to consistently recommend the most expensive hotels and restaurants in practically every part of the world. The entry for Istanbul (which is covered quite well, actually) lists 7 options for places to stay. The second-cheapest one runs at a cool $385. If I had to choose 7 accommodation options for a large city, I would probably suggest at least 2 upscale options, 2 mid-level (which I define as $100-250), and 2 budget options. I don't need a travel book to tell me that the most expensive hotel in town is probably a nice place to spend the night. With her apparent motto of "the more expensive the better" I should expect Outer Space to be one of the entries in the next edition of this book, what with its $100 million price tag. On the other hand, there's no Four Seasons or Park Hyatt hotel there, so maybe not.This book is useful for travel ideas, and makes for an entertaining read about places you might not have heard of. But unfortunately, it often feels like an amateurish copy+paste job.Trivia note: I counted that there are actually 1012 places in the book.

I bought this book for myself many years ago and I'm delighted to say I've been to see about 500 of these places in my 71 years. I recently purchased this book for my son and hope that he'll be able to see all of them by the time he reaches 71. It's a wonderful book for anybody. Travel has been the joy of my life and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Interesting book that focuses on hotels as well as locations and sites. Contains maps and pictures. Covers Europe, Africa, Middle-East, Latin America, Asia, U.S.A. and Canada, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and Australia and The Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda. Books near 1000 pages compacted into a nice size for the book shelf or countertop. You may have been to some of these places, a lot you probably haven't. Either way you'll probably have a bunch of interesting places you may be interested in or to put on your bucket list.

I have been using this book as a resource for planning travel. Ms. Schultz has some great, out of the way spots that I would never have known to even look for! I've taken several trips in the past couple years that when I looked at this guide, I missed some stuff that I really would have enjoyed if I'd known about it.

This was much smaller than I anticipated, not in content but in size. The print and pictures are very small, so get your glassed out, you'll need them. I do think it has an amazing amount of content and the value is certainly there in terms of content. I think it would be a lot more enjoyable if it wasn't so small and hard to read. This is the size of a small paperback, but about 1200 pages thick, so you will get your money's worth if you have good eyes are don't mind donning your reading glasses. It is also very heavy. Maybe it would be nicer if it was bigger and broken down into separate books by sections of the world so also not so heavy to hold when reading for a long time.

My daughter received this book in an earlier version when she graduated from college. She has made it a point to check off as many places as possible. I was impressed so I have given copies for every graduation thereafter. It is a lifetime bucket list which inspires one to expand your horizons. It is always appreciated.

I absolutely LOVE this NIV Study Bible in Large Print. I love the red letter edition. It arrived within a week. I am confused as to why I did not get indexed pages... but that sure isn't a deal-breaker. This Bible is SO FULL of exciting stuff that I did not put it down for hours after I opened it! There is the 200 page Concordance, the numerous beautiful color maps, and dozens and dozens of color charts/graphs showing all kinds of information that you could ever possibly want to know (i.e. all the Parables of Jesus and which authors wrote about which ones or all the Miracles of Jesus and which of the Gospels to find those, etc). The layout of the text is as follows: scripture on the upper half of the page (in the standard double column format) with the study notes on the lower half. The bonded leather cover is nice, and I do not find the thin pages to be a problem as others have suggested since I am not used to having a previous Bible with heavier weight paper. The size of the Bible is not too huge for me either as was also suggested by some... It is 10.75"x7.5"x2" and weighs over 5 pounds and I do actually take it to Bible study with me. The only problem (and it would never keep me from purchasing this Bible...) is the lack of Bible covers available in size xxl to go with this. I only found about 5 to choose from; none of which were the least bit feminine. I went with the Wordkeeper as it is a perfect fit (no swimming around). All in all though.... VERY pleased with this purchase!!!

Love my new WORD!! I wear glasses and the the regural print was becoming difficult so I decided to purchase a large print. This came in 2 days as promised. The print size is perfectly large! Maps, study notes, concordance Index all large print.

I was Called to be a Teacher of the Bible and Gospels many years ago as I am 65. After 15 years of teaching in our local church, and 12 years directing our Prison Ministry Program; I am truly astounded with your fusion of the NIV Life Application Bible and current archeology. I have a very solid foundation in archeology and regional anthropology of the Levant during an extensive period of time prior to the Roman occupation through Josephus at Masada. The NIV Study Bible illustrations are in exquisite color with photos from ongoing research site. The use of the "Roman Forum" in the "Book of Romans" where Paul physically stood and spoke. The NIV Study Bible collection of maps is unparalleled with color graphics providing nation's in their Biblical names highlighted, and combined with overlays of commentary. I have already ordered several NIV Study Bibles, with one specially for my Son. When it arrived, my Step-Grandson in his late-20's flipped through it telling his Dad..."that he (Dad) was not getting it back, this is the first Bible he had ever found interesting and fun to read". I was floored and have ordered and send our three more. I am reading it each evening to a another Vet who is dying and slowly coming to know Christ over the phone two states away - we served 3 years together on a ship. We read together with his copy in hand, and his questions are answered by the commentary or by me. Thank you Zondervan and your research staff who prepared this incredible edition. God Bless your incredible achievement.

In my return to the faith, I needed a good Bible to help me grow. I've only had the Bible for three days, but felt compelled to write my first review on Amazon. There are several pages before each book of the Bible that explains the upcoming book and gives you a real understanding of the what, where, why and how. The maps and different pictures of artifacts allow you to finally understand locations and things from before our time. This has great material below the scripture, which helps give context to what is written. As others have said, this is not light, so don't plan to haul it around on a regular basis. This is the most money I have ever spent on any book, but well worth every penny. Buy and enjoy!

Especially strong in historical information. Excellent study bible. Would note does not have the life lessons of the life applications study bible. If you want a study bible with straight forward, well documented text this bible will meet your needs.

This bible is HUGE. But it's so amazing. Thanks to Elohim for giving us such a precious tool to learn the word of God for the salvation of or souls. Studying about Daniel Prophecy and the Seven Feasts in Three Times are so in depth with the visuals, charts, and world history all in one resource. 👍🏽

This Bible was recommended and now I know why. Larger print and contains reference material at the bottom of each page. A little on the heavy side, but would purchase again.

This was a wonderful surprise birthday gift my darling wife gave me, I LOVE the Holy Bible but traditional Bibles, in their original form, can be difficult to casually read and reflect upon and this NIV Bible is great and treasured. My wife knows I love Leather Bound books for durability and classic reading feel.

Super Duper! This one is part of the older version which uses REAL instruments. The new ones have that jingle bells computer doorbell accompaniment, So Awful. I know real musicians cost money but it is so important that kids get to hear real instruments, real singers without auto-tune and chipped drum beats. They get enough of that from the Youtube that their parents let them watch. Bring Back Real, Authentic Elemental Music.

This cd was put together very well. I was very impressed with the recordings and the presentation. If you want to take a musical trip around the world this is a great way to go. The singer's introduce themselves in their native language and sing in their native language. Then the song is sung again by American children with the translation. Shirley from Switzerland with her beautiful yodeling is worth it alone but there are beautiful songs from the West Inies and Africa, as well as Europe and Asia. Highly recommended!

This CD and accompanying booklet are very fun and educational . We are learning about "around the world" in our homeschool and we have enjoyed listening to the different languages and styles in the songs. It's fun that there are songs from each continent!

Love this cd. Definitely worth the purchase to learn different songs. We use this with our geography homeschool curriculum.

Great for my co op Geography course. The kids love it.

Purchased this CD almost 20 years ago for my grandchildren. I just bought 5 more to share with family and friends with small grandchildren and for my daughter who teaches 5th graders. Great activities and songs for children of all ages.

I loved all of the wee sing sets as a kid, but this was my favorite. When I found out that it was available on CD, I snapped it up! Fun children's songs from around the world in both English and their native languages. You won't be able to resist singing along! Includes lullabies as well as timeless children's songs.
