I have spent some time in NYC before but had always been with a city resident and hadn't ever needed a guide. But when the opportunity came about for my husband and I to spend a long weekend there, I absolutely took it. I love the city (in small doses, couldn't ever live there), but hadn't ever had a chance to do any touristy stuff. So I read some reviews and picked up this guide.I spent a few days reading over it, and after my trip, I would say it's a great guide if you don't know what you want to do, or how to structure your days, because it has very specific suggestions for stuff like that. It has a section for each part of the city, at the end of which is a run down on a sample day one could spend in that neighborhood.But as far as a comprehensive while-you're-there guide? I wish I had gotten Not For Tourists. This was a great planner, and had street and subway maps that were incredibly useful, but when you're looking for a bookstore nearby to kill an hour? Nada. Also, because of the setup of the book (chock full of Top Ten lists, duh), it jumps around a lot. One museum is mentioned in four different places, and vital information is only on one of those pages, but from the index there's no way to tell which one of those pages has something important like the hours of the place, for example, so you have to check every page.Again, great for planning, less great for a carry-along for your trip.

I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without."Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", but that has the essentials, and excellent fold out maps in color that are more easily understandable than those of other guides. I would like to highlight the fact that even though I am very absent minded, I could easily find my way in NYC thanks to those maps. And if I can, everybody will be able to do that!From my point of view, this guide is ideal for those tourists that don't have a lot of time, and want to see as much as possible during their visit to NYC (specifically Manhattan), if possible without a tourist guide. "Top 10 New York" points out quite a few places you simply must go to in the city, but also tells you about different neighbourhoods, and their history. There are many photos in color that help you to decide what you want to do, and historic data that allows you to learn about this city.Moreover, most visitors will find the insider tips for tourists helpful, and the planned walks and itineraries a good option. Other useful sections in this guide are, for example, "Best shopping districts", "Best hotels for every budget" (I found my hotel through Internet, though), "Best restaurants in each area" and "Most fun places for children". What is more, "Top 10 New York" is almost pocket-sized, so you can carry it with you everywhere, even if your purse is tiny (not my case!), or if you have bought too many things and your handbag is rather heavy (yes, that often happens to me).All in all, I am very happy I bought this guide, and I strongly recommend it to you :)Belen Alcat

For those traveling to New York City this is an essential guide to bring with you. The restaurant recommendations are top notch. The maps are detailed and a pocket subway guide is always helpful. Whether you are going in for a week or a weekend this is the guide you want to carry with you when you are out and about. You may want to use another guide if you are going in for a longer period of time for planning purposes but again this is the one you want to carry with you when you are in the city.

If you are going to be in New York City this is a great book to have. It is thorough and covers all of the areas you would want to see. The recommendations for hotels and restaurants are top notch. It includes an excellent subway map and has been useful on countless trips to the city.

This book is marvellous and is a traveler's best friend. It's easy to read with lots of photos and colors and loads of information. Wouldn't travel without the Eyewitness guides.

Great book for the first time visitor.

My work has provided me with the opportunity to travel a good bit. I am the type of person who wants to get a working background for my destinations, both in terms of history and geographic layout. I think this needs to be read by everybody in the US. On that note, I hate that the people who need to read it the most, are among the people who are unwilling to even consider reading this book because they have decided they know everything there is to know on the subject.

The best book written to date on the subject of excessive use of force by police on minority groups. Matt Horace, well respected in the law enforcement community at the local, state and federal level, tells it like it is from a personal perspective. A compelling and must read!

A Very informative and interesting read

SHOULD REVEAL MORE BUT STOPPED SHORT

"Even as a federal agent, I have been on surveillance or supporting an operation and have had an officer approach me and say that the neighbors called about a "suspicious" vehicle, which meant it was a black guy driving a car. I’ve been the man in that suspicious vehicle.”Matthew Horace worked as a cop at the federal, state, and local level for 28 years, and he is plenty sick of the “toxic brotherhood.” The quote above refers to an incident that occurred in Mill Creek, a (very white) suburb outside Seattle, Washington where I live, but it’s not just here; it’s everywhere in the US. Specifically, he tells us about cities where some of the most notorious cop violence has created resistance such as New Orleans, Chicago, Baltimore, and Ferguson.There are essays provided by police chiefs from some of these places as well as from Kathleen O’Toole, who was chief here in Seattle; O’Toole’s prose reek of electioneering, the sort of style that speaks for itself. Many of these contributors contradict Horace’s own assertion that the problem is endemic, and is absolutely not a case of a few bad apples. More than one of these essays hold the fascination I’d feel if forced to watch a rattlesnake before it strikes; the sanctimony, the grandiose claims of justice supposedly served. The most interesting of them all is from an African-American police chief in Chicago, whose personal stories of her family members having been abused—including her sons—stand diametrically opposed to what she does for a living, and yet she maintains her tightrope walk, determined to make a difference where only the smallest, if any, seems likely.By now I should have thanked Net Galley and Hachette Books for the review copy, which I received free and early. This excellent book is available to the public Tuesday, August 7, 2018.There has been a flurry of books published about this subject since it became national news. More than anything, the internet and cellular phones have stripped the gatekeeping capacity of the major news outlets; cops that were able to beat and even kill people and lie about it later are being outed left and right. Even I, who am an old lefty and have never really believed cops were there to protect ordinary people, am shocked by much of what’s been revealed. I wondered, as I began reading, whether Horace could add to what’s already been said and shown. What could he add to the body of information provided by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Angela Davis, and Matt Taibbi? (Many years ago, Norm Stamper, former Seattle police chief, also wrote an expose that included a chapter on why cops beat Black men.)As it happens, Horace has a lot of information that I hadn’t read, and it isn’t just a matter of fine detail. For example, who knew that in New Orleans, cops were not merely accepting graft, but actively robbing Black-owned businesses, guns drawn, and making off with their cash and other valuables? It’s the sort of thing that lives in your head for a long time after you read it; but then again, it should be.The sourcing is impeccable.Those with an interest in Black Lives Matter, in civil rights in general, or with an interest in race issues within the so-called criminal justice system in America should get this book, for full price if necessary, and read it. Read the whole thing. So much of our future depends on how we respond.

The part about shootings and harassment back in the day by white men to black men doesn't surprise me it's knowing it's still going on. In this book we learn more about police abuse particularly to black officers, the many shootings of young black men like Michael Brown etc. Black Lives Matter. I really didn't know there was that many shootings of black men until reading this book. It's a enormous outcry in my mind. All in all this book is very interesting and kept me reading. I hated what Mr. Horace went through and the other black officers. This story needed to be told and everyone should pass this book around. Thank you Mr. Horace for telling this much needed book, it's about time someone did.One line will stay with me for a long time: If you call 911 who know who will show up. My toddler and I read through these jokes at snacktime. I think these are better suited for children a bit older (6-10 year olds?)... many of these were above my three year old's comprehension. That being said, I picked out a number of jokes that I thought he might "get" and he did enjoy those. The "crambulance" (crab + ambulance) joke was his favorite. A few minutes after we were done with the joke book, he did want me to read more.

It is nice to see a joke book that are easy to read for my kids to learn. I read them a few and they were rolling on the floor laughing! Now they are saying they can't wait to go to school to tell some of the jokes to their friends and teachers! I can not wait to read the rest of the books. Oh and the puppet was adorable. My 5 yr old son claimed it for himself.

My kids actually think I'm cool reading the jokes to them. I really love this book and the added bonus Puppets. I highly recommend this book! I am working my way through a series of books by Larry Crabb. The most recent one I read was entitled The Pressure's Off, which was a really good book. Becoming a True Spiritual Community (1999) was the next on the list. I figured it would not be much different from other books I have read recently and that I would likely enjoy it. Having said that, I was profoundly moved by this book. The message contained in this book was exciting and fear provoking. Crabb discusses his vision for what he thinks true spiritual community (i.e., church) could look like. It is exciting because I can taste his vision for community where it is safe to be broken and to remind one another of Christ's forgiveness on a deep spiritual level. Its fear provoking because I have a hard time imagining how to get into this type of community. As a typically proud, independent American male, I am less inclined to open myself to others for true spiritual friendship, laying my thoughts and emotions out to be seen. But as I said, I can taste it, and I would like to see it work.As a psychologist, I think one of the things I most appreciated about this book was his vision for what Christian psychology, or soul care, may look like. He believes that the community of the church should be the primary place for healing to take place and I think he is exactly right.On page 178, he wrote, "In the middle of the wild ocean of shattered dreams and broken lives, the community of Christ celebrates God's forgiveness: they believe in what each other could become, they never minimize sin but they love to maximize grace. They are carriers of Christ to each other. That's what spiritual friends do when they act together to journey to God."I would highly recommend this book. I know that there are those who have had negative reviews of this book, but I have a hard time seeing why. If you are one of those people, I would hope that you would be able to dialog about it in spiritual community.

As it has often been the case, it is so again... I have fallen "head over heels" with the vision that is portrayed in this book, Becoming a True Spiritual Community. Over the past few years there has been something almost providential in the way books have come up on my "radar." The timing of where my thoughts and passions are running and the intersection of the subject matter of the book when it falls into my hands has occurred on more occasions than I can attribute to sheer coincidence. It is the case again with this book by Larry Crabb.For forty years I have had an on-again-off-again relationship with the Christian Church that exists in North America. My primary experience has been with Protestant Evangelicalism, but my knowledge of the Christian church has extended beyond the boundaries of that circle in the most recent decade. What I have experienced in my forty years of churchianity has not been what I would describe as good and that experience of "not good" resulted in seasons where I danced intimately with the church and other seasons where there was no relationship at all. I accept the responsibility that is mine where my heart and my attitude were incompatible with the Christian church, but I can't help but think if the church were living up to the organism it is described in the Bible there may not have been the tension between us through the years... there may never have been a break in our relationship at all. I wonder...So, what is it about this book, Becoming a True Spiritual Community: A Profound Vision of What the Church Can Be, that I find so wonderfully endearing? Before I answer that, let me point out that this is a republication of a book formerly published under the name of The Safest Place on Earth. As far as I have been able to discern, the books are the same. Now, back to the question, what is it about this book?Becoming a True Spiritual Community ranks as one of the most honest assessments and characterizations of the American church that I have ever read. Saying this I must also clarify that there is no "church bashing" or vitriolic rhetoric that demeans the church. The words are honest and written from an attitude of love for the church, but they are candid, blunt, and revealing. As Crabb reveals some of the shallow façade supporting the contemporary church he does so with painfully honest self-examination that draws the reader into journeying inward to make similar examinations of their own spirituality... sometimes exposing our own shallowness, pride, ego, and selfish desires. This process of exposing and examination continues through part one and into part two of the book before the tide begins to turn and the hopeful beauty of the church and spiritual community that God desires for us is revealed. There are allusions to this hope in the first half of the book, but the crescendo builds to a gloriously hopeful ending beginning at the halfway mark around chapter nine.The book is full of personal anecdotes and many metaphors gleaned from classic and contemporary literature from the disciplines of spiritual formation. There is also a very thorough discussion guide at the end of the book that would prove itself invaluable for a group study.I cannot say enough good things about this book. I'm sure timing has much to do with my excitement, but I also know that my desire for spiritual community as described by Dr. Crabb has been my passion for at least twenty-five years. I am reinvigorated and encouraged by what was written in this book and will recommend it as one of the top reads concerning the study of ecclesiology (the Church). I look forward to sharing the thoughts contained in this book with others and being a part of the communities that will be formed out of those discussions.

This book is written about community, but I found the thing that drew me in was his discussion about "animal and diabolical". This discussion is based on the evil that is found in humans. Some would be "animal" behavior, meaning things that everyone - even non-christians - sees as evil or "wrong", "bad", or "destructive". And then there is "diabolical" - the things that are common Christian behavior that is not easily recognizable as bad for us. Like being so busy that you neglect your children or mate, or being so passive that evil can exist, or other things that Christians would fight to the death as being okay in the name of "obedience to God" or "fulfilling what God has commanded" but they never will take a look at what their lifestyle is doing to others or the face of God it is presenting. Definitely something to take a look at. There is A LOT of diabolical going on in my life and in churches today! Take a look!

but it would certainly be worth the effort. The thing is, it would require quite a bit of effort; and I haven't met a lot of people who would be willing to do the work to make this happen.The good news is that there are some people who are willing and that's enough to start. The truth is, that it's just too easy to keep doing things the way they've always been done. Perhaps that's not entirely true. Church is work no matter how you do it, so why not do it right? And what Dr. Crabb provides here, is indeed the framework to do it right.The only thing necessary is hungry hearts. So if you have one of those, get this book and read it.By the way, this is exactly the same book as "The Safest Place On Earth" with a different cover. I do think this is a better title and more clearly reflects what this book is about. I have both books and even the page numbers are the same.

My 10 year old grandson was doing a project in school and I purchased this book, especially because it had tons of pictures of immigrants coming into the United States through Ellis Island. The fact that the book is dedicated to children made it incredibly easy for him to relate to. He asked questions (which I had to research since I was born in the U.S.) and received an A+ on the project he was working on.

A nice addition to my library about Ellis Island. I seems that the children were well cared for, in most cases, but it is very sad when they were rejected for physical problems.

Great book. we just came back from a trip to Ellis Island so it was a very interesting reed.

I loved all the photos throughout the book! I went to visit the museum on Ellis Island and so the book was especially interesting to me.

I love to make wacky, "out there" characters, and I was hoping that, with bloodlines: hidden being mostly unimaginative templates, I had high hopes for the Legendary. And I was disappointed. I know that many complained about the brevity of the Bloodlines listed in Hidden, and that Legendary was trying to overcome that. However, when most of the fewer bloodlines in this book, less than in hidden, are ridiculous and just plain gross, and not the good kind of gross either. I think my biggest disappointment was the lack of Tremere, which I was hoping would be in this book. There ARE a few exceptions, that are better than even those in (the good ones) in hidden, but overall, it was a disappointment. For those who want more story about a bloodline, this book doesn't disappoint.

Amazing book.

I don't know what it is with White Wolf but they seem to be having a really hard time coming up with bloodlines that players will actually want to play as. This book is filled with interesting possibilities, but they are ultimately largely used solely by the storyteller to make colorful NPCs, as the majority of players don't really see much appealing in the chapters. My favorite bloodline out of this book is the "Players," where their disciplines are geared toward pretending to be something they aren't, which I find appealing from a player character standpoint. Otherwise, though, the book's use has been largely limited.

Well I had initially bought this book in the hopes that it was on the same level as Bloodlines the Hidden, but this book fell short of what my hopes were. There were only a few intresting bloodlines that really stood out to me that I think I'll use in my chronicles. However to start with, the opening story that was put into this book was lacking and wasn't really that good, in fact after reading it I went back and reread another one of the better ones in the books (that being the Lancea Sanctum and Bloodlines:The Hidden). The only Bloodlines that really stood out to me are The Children OF Judas, a group of Deava who were born out of Suicide, The Galloi, a group of horrificly beautiful Nosferatu, The Macellarius, A group of Gluttonous Ventrue who weigh 300+ pounds and can eat human, werewolf, vampire or any other flesh, And Finally the PLayers, a bunch of Mekhet who get off on being the stereotypical vampires (they have the nicknames of: Wannabes, Posers, and other less printable names. And there character concepts made me laugh!. The other down side was the lack of Gangrel and Nosferatu bloodlines (it seems as though those are few and far between anyway) If however you really need to add more bloodlines, then Buy Bloodlines:The Hidden, thats the better book. However if you TRULY need this book, at least buy it used to save you some heartache and wallet ache out of the dissappointment you'll receive.

What can I say, when I reviewed Bloodlines: The Hidden I said that if Legendary was even half as good as it, I would be pleased. Well, this book blows The Hidden out of the water, completely. The descriptions to the new bloodlines are more in depth, even more elequent, and extremely informative. The added Disciplines are a major plus, and even the illustrations are remarkable. The introduction does state that the bloodlines are "legendary" due to certain stories, not because they maybe over powerful (although a couple of them are extremely powerful). The "legends" that come with the bloodlines are in depth and descriptive, and they truly do make the bloodlines what the book titles them as. This book is a must have for anyone who runs a World of Darkness game. And those players who wanna sneak something unique into the game, this is what you need. The introduction also leaves it up for yet even more Bloodlines books which is some what disappointing and exciting. Again, I reiterate what I have said before, White Wolf knows how to market well, and yes, with these two books, I would buy everyone that comes out after them.
