Alex Ross's artwork is fantastic. It is among the best the medium has to offer. I would rather look at his renderings of Batman, Superman and Captain Marvel more than any other artist. His depictions of them can often be bought at Comic Conventions for several thousand dollars.The story is a the typical JLA vs. Legion of Doom type story we have come to expect. Brainiac and Luthor combine forces and lead the villains to a temporary victory over the Justice League. They steal some of Batman's information that is on the JLA computer and use Batman's contingency plans to take down the league (this is derived from an older JLA story titled "Tower of Babel" that was written by Mark Waid). A couple of lucky breaks here and there and the heroes escape their different prisons and regroup. Led by the ingenuity of Batman, they figure out how to defeat the villains and restore order.The interesting twist on this story is that it begins with the villains taking a global, long-term view of how to solve the Earth's problems (a la Mark Grunewald's 1985 series, Squadron Supreme - they are Marvel's stand-in for the JLA). But it is quickly revealed that their interest in helping humanity is just a scam, and it devolves into the typical heroes vs. villains that we've read so many times.All that said, it is worth it for the art. Just don't expect any new twists on the age old battlefield.

Alex Ross and Jim Krueger (the creative team behind Marvel's Earth X) provide their spin on a classic Silver Age style story of the Justice League taking on the Legion of Doom. When Brainiac starts sending visions of an apocalyptic future to the leaders of the Legion of Doom, the various villains put aside their differences to band together and prevent the end of the world (something their visions show the Justice League being incapable of). As part of their plan, the Legion sows public mistrust against the League and eventually enacts multiple plans to either kill, control, or incapacitate the Leaguers. Pulling on a wide variety of characters aside from the main Trinity of DC (including Shazam, Elongated Man, Red Tornado, and Martian Manhunter), Ross and Krueger provide a similar treatment to the League that Alan Moore gave to Superman in his classic Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? The book is rooted in the Silver Age era and sensibilities, but is still a violent and dark story more at home with modern comics. Between Krueger's great narrative exposition and Ross' iconic painted panels the book is a tremendous read although as with other Ross classics the action sequences are a bit too static and hard to follow at times. Likewise, despite the absolute brutal take down of the League mainstays at the start of the story, pretty much every major character survives the book intact, bending the sense of believability even for a comic book (how Aquaman in particular survives isn't even properly explained).

I really like this graphic novel, there is just no way around it. The book just hits all the right chords with me, from its characterization of the heroes and villains to the well laid out plot.The story at its most basic is your classic Justice League versus Legion of Doom type scenario. The scheme cooked up by the villains this time leaves them feeling menacing without being ridiculous. The book features a large array of characters from various teams and uses most of them to great effect. Even smaller less well known heroes get their time to shine.The art of the book is breathtaking, showing an incredible level of detail and care that you just don't see in your usual monthly comics.Overall I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you are a fan of DC's heroes then you will probably find something to enjoy about this book.

In 'Justice' Alex Ross assembles nearly the entire DC universe to weave a grand tale in classic comic book style.The story begins with the major DC villains collectively experiencing the same dream of nuclear armageddon, one which the Justice League is completely unable to stop. To prevent this fate, the villains begin to work for the good of mankind, to the surprise of just about everyone. Of course, we soon find out there is more to this story than meets the eye.There are two notable things about this collection. The first is the artwork by Ross, mastermind behind 'Kingdom Come' and 'Marvels'. Ross consistently delivers the best artwork comics are capable of publishing. The second is the writing, which is highly idealistic in a way comics haven't been for decades. Now this does lead to one or two noticeable plot holes, and thus the one star off review, but it still a gripping, enjoyable sotory that I can recommend to any DC fan.

This review pertains to all three volumes of "Justice", since the three volumes comprise a single story.First of all, the artwork in "Justice" by Alex Ross and Doug Braithwaite is probably as good as it gets. These are paintings, not just illustrations, and the book is a feast for the eyes. Second, the story is pretty dark: it concerns an apocalyptic vision that a number of super villains have and which they understand as a prophecy of the end of the world to be caused by the Justice League, unless the villains can stop them. There's plenty of violence and disturbing images / elements, but the story isn't dull or facile by any means. It's not for everyone, though. It's darker than I enjoy, but again the artwork is so splendid and the tale is interesting enough that I'm glad I bought it and I'm glad I read it.

This team of writers and artists achieve a certain majesty in the DC characters which is unsurpassed.It's more than a graphic novel. The true depth of character from the words spokenAnd the realistic paintings elicit a dream in the reader that wow, these heroes could be, and very nearly are....REAL.And who doesn't wish for such?Much gratitude to all who make this read possible.Highly recommend.

Essential road, track and technical review of every Buell up through the 1125 series. A great addition to any Buell enthusiast's nightstand.

For those who are bitten by the Buell Bug [pretty nasty it is to] this gives you the history of the bikes as they came out. Written by motor-cycle reveiwers not a writer you"ll get lots of different opinions not just one-some like "em,some don"t. If your on a plane or bus trip or got some spare time to kill it"s just the ticket to drool over what next Buell you want in your garage to keep the other one company.

This book is wonderful,it is full of Buell articles from Buells start til finish.All the articles from all the motorcycle magazines about Buells all models,years.VERY INFORMATIVE,good book for Buell owners.

A fun compilation. Opinionated, but this is what the book is about. Great to 'snack' on. Would have greatly improved with at least some colour plates.

i'm biased - i'm a die-hard Buell enthusiast. while the pictures are Excellent, it's obviously written by a brit who values a completely different style of bike [meaning not an American, slower-but-harder-hitting RPM beast]

The Brooklands Book “Buell 1985-2009 Road Test Portfolio” offers an outstanding look back at the history of one of America’s most innovative motor companies via the reprinting of magazine articles which pertain to the subject. The book follows the traditional Brooklands Book format utilizing card stock covers with color images only appearing on the front and rear covers. The articles themselves are reprinted in black and white, and despite nearly all of them originally being done with color images, the transition to black and white pictures here doesn’t hurt the content in my opinion as the images still retain good clarity throughout.The articles are reprinted from leading motorcycle magazines including Cycle, Cycle World, Performance Bike, Motorcyclist, and more. With over 70 articles on tap, and 272 pages in length, there is a lot of content included on the machines of Mr. Erik Buell.Starting off with a great article taken from the July 1985 issue of Cycle written by Kevin Cameron entitled “The Other American Maker- Buell RW750A”, which pretty much sets the keystone in place for all articles to follow, the models are represented well in my opinion spanning from the RR1000 all the way through to the 1125R. The reader can easily move through the book and walk away with a sound history of Buell Motorcycles up until the parting of ways with Harley Davidson in 2009. One also gets insight into the merger of Buell’s company with Harley in 1993 and to the innovative designs, particularly in the chassis realm, that the bikes became known for.While this book offers an excellent historical perspective of Buell Motorcycles through articles written by some of the best names in the industry, I noticed that there weren't any “Buyer’s Guide” articles included, something that would have certainly assisted today’s perspective buyers in going about procuring a pre-owned Buell. Then again, there may not be any articles of this type out there to be reprinted.Overall, “Buell 1985-2009 Road Test Portfolio” is a great reference to have on hand that allows the enthusiast to quickly access road test and comparison information on a variety of Buell motorcycles with great ease. Not great as far as mosaics go. Good color by number and cute pictures, but shapes/pixels are very small and you can see the picture before it's colored. We like to be surprised and figure out the pic as we color it in.

I feel I am a rather harsh reviewer so it has to be good for me to award five stars. A Tale of Love and Darkness is quite wonderful and richly deserves high acclaim.A bildungsroman... a family saga... a memoir about growing up in the newly formed state of Israel, A Tale of Love and darkness held me from the opening sentence to the last.A non-jew, I have never understood the relentless persecution of the Jews over the centuries and I have always believed in their right to a homeland.Oz is an intellectual and free thinker and acknowledges throughout the book the suffering of the Arabs as well as the Israelis. He describes his thoughts as a child from a right wing family when he is obviously influenced by the opinions of the adult world he is surrounded by, to later in life when he joins a kibbutz and discovers his own sense of morality.Life was harsh and frightening for everyone in those early days of building a new nation from scratch under the hostile, unfriendly eyes of the Britishwith never-ending threats of attacks from the surrounding Arab nations and none more so than for someone like Oz's mother. A beauty from a privileged background in Eastern Europe, well educated and speaking several languages, she must have felt the weight of being plunged into the struggle in those early days of Israel. Relegated to household chores and mandanity for her entire life, taking a backseat to her scholarly husband and the other male members of their community I can understand to a degree how unhappy she must have been. She loses herself in fanciful tales she relates to her young son and maintains a close friendship with girls from the same school and background in Eastern Europe. Her story touched me deeply.Overall this is a story of great understanding and compassion, of intelligent observation, and deep thought.Although it is rather a large book I could have gone on reading. A powerful story told against the backdrop of one of the most enterprising and courageous and yet sad and problematic situations in history, that still makes the headlines on a daily basis.I encourage you to read this magnificent story of the making of Israel and the people who struggled to make it happen.

I wouldn't call "A Tale of Love & Darkness" by Amos Oz an autobiography. I would call it a memoir; a memoir of love and darkness of Jerusalem; the new state of Israel; kibbutz life. I would call if a memorial for his mother, who took her own life at the age of 38 when Oz was about 13.Oz's account of life in Jerusalem will make you laugh, cry and feel deep compassion for the early settlers who lived and died through the War of Independence in 1948. This was a time when Jerusalemites could be killed purposefully by the enemy for emerging from the house simply to bring in the laundry or to play with a toy in the backyard.You will feel the agony of young Amos, who, even unto manhood, endeavours to come to terms with why his mother chose suicide. She may have been manic depressive, decades before such a condition was recognized and treated.Oz is a writer's writer. He inspires admiration and envy in any writer with his use of language, so rich in description, so capable of expressing humour, gentleness, affection, poignancy and nostalgia.Opposed to the heart-rending account of his mother is the humour which is at times outrageously funny, for instance in his portrayals of Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin. The Begin account in particular brought so many tears to my eyes from laughter that I had to keep wiping them away in order to see what I was reading. Briefly, he tells of the time he and his grandfather were in an auditorium to hear Begin orate. It seems that old Biblial Hebrew had changed to a much more compatible version of Hebrew to be used for everyday life. This was the new Hebrew that the young Sabras (born in Israel) were using. But not Menachem Begin who continued to plow on in old Hebrew. The word for "arm" as in armament, had changed in the new Hebrew to mean something to do with the F word. Begin plowed on, loudly asking who was arming nations, and asking who would arms the Israelis! What the boy heard was the F word, over and over again. The young boy could not contain himself and burst into hilarious laughter, which he couldn't control. To make matters worse, they were sitting in the VIP seats at the front of the auditorium. Out his goes in a flash, being dragged by the ear by grandpop.Amos Oz came from a family of scholars and writers. He wanted to be a writer. For a while in his teens he thought one had to live an adventurous like in great cities such as Paris (the Hemingway influence) to become a writer. Then he happened to read the Ohio stories by Sherwood Anderson. He realized that a writer writes what a writer knows. S/he writes about everyday people involved in everyday events, the spirit of the place, the hopes, the struggles, the ongoing dreams and the aborted dreams.Along the way, Oz creates great literature: a veritable feast for the reader.The book is brilliantly translated from the Hebrew by Nicholas de Lange, who is professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Cambridge University, England. De Lange is also an ordained Reform Rabbi. He received the Risa Domb/Porjes Prize for his translation of "A Tale of Love and Darkness."I am one of those voracious readers who devours books. This one, this "A Tale of Love and Darkness" - this one I read slowly, in order to savour every precious word.

As I neared the finish of Oz's A Tale of Love and Darkness I slowed down, not wanting it to end. The author uses the device of repeat and build with about a dozen - of hundreds - of specific memories, the most telling of these his mother's suicide, about which we don't get all we are going to get till the last page.Many, many paragraphs are studies in how to write, how to draw out emotion in readers, how to talk about, how to find the right tone for narrating events that have been damaging to the speaker, and how to reveal the worst thing of all - shame.This memoir is a masterwork, and for people - like me - who know the bare-bones history of the creation of the State of Israel, but never deeply considered the emotions - especially the chasmic gap between what was promised back home in Galicia and the reality, the politics, the poverty, the shortage of work for a million refugee intellectuals with three million opinions, as well as the interminable waiting, waiting, Oz's book is an education. It has helped me better understand some of my friends who lived through this history. Five stars!

Saying that Pancho Barnes was a character would be like saying Al Pacino is an actor. Almost everyone is familiar with Amelia Earhart but most are not aware of the numerous other accomplished women pilots of that same era, including Pancho Barnes. Pancho had also set many records and broke some that had been set by her better-known compatriots. Pancho was not averse to getting dirty working on the planes she flew as well as other machinery and that combined with the way she typically dressed resulted in her often being mistaken for a man. She also worked as a stunt pilot for movies and organized a stunt pilots union to improve the pay and dangerous conditions that they dealt with.She had been born to wealth and had been greatly influenced by her grandfather who was an inventor, businessman, risk taker, etc, and Pancho inherited many of these traits. My first real exposure to Pancho's story was through a 1988 movie that starred Valerie Bertinelli as Pancho Barnes, which vastly improved on the real Pancho's looks. Pancho wasn't pretty, she swore as a normal part of her vocabulary, constantly told off-color stories, and developed a liking for younger men-including one of my uncles who was married to her, for a while. But she was always up for a good time and would freely share whatever she had. Her parties went on for days and were legendary, attended by fellow pilots and Hollywood friends.She had many great business ideas but as soon as thing started coming together she lost interest and was on to the next thing. This combined with a total lack of financial common sense resulted in her going through money like there was no end to it resulting in many business failures. Along the way, because of her connections with other pilots, including Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager, and others, she developed a pilot training center on her property during WWII and many of her acquaintances along the way continued to hang out at her facilities including the book's namesake Happy Bottom Riding Club. She experienced many successes but also many failures. This book was well written and researched and put some realism to the life of a very colorful individual that had been softened quite a bit for the 1988 movie.Anyone with an interest in the early days of aviation, women in aviation, WWII pilot training, development of new aircraft and the test pilots who proved them, and how not to run a business as well as many other topics will enjoy this book. To sum up Pancho Barnes' general philosophy in life I will just list one of her quotes here: Ah, hell. We had more fun in a week than those weenies had in a lifetime. - Pancho Barnes

An excellent book, which deserves to be read just as much for the writing style as its fascinating subject matter. Pancho Barnes features in passing in various books biographies about the Muroc/Edwards AFB era, so the broad parameters of her story are reasonably well known. Lauren Kessler's research, however, is very detailed and paints a full picture of a very interesting character. Even though the "riches-to-rags" story is fairly obvious, the manner in which it is presented is captivating. I could not put this book down.One very (very) minor flaw with the book: a map of the Antelope Valley area showing the location of the Happy Bottom Riding Club between the Edwards and Rosamond dry lakes would have assisted readers with conceptualising those parts of the book. That however is a very minor point and doesn't stop me giving it 5 stars.Well worth the read.

She was the proprietor of the saloon/motel/dude ranch where all the test pilots from nearby Edwards Air Force Base hung out. Her character didn't get much footage in the movie, but she was compelling enough to warrant further investigation.Author Lauren Kessler offers an insider's view into the life of this enigmatic woman, from her privileged childhood to her poverty-stricken death. This is no mere biography...it's a tour de force of the woman behind all the legends.Pancho Barnes was raised by wealthy parents. Her grandfather had made his fortune with patents and in real estate in the early part of the 20th century. Her grandfather died broke, but he lived large. Her grandfather and father doted on her and indulged her every wish. She was puzzled by her mother's world of socials, needlework and fancy dresses. She was dazzled by horses, the outdoors and demanding physical activity.Early on, it was clear that Florence was not going to be a beauty, nor was she the shy and retiring kind. She rode horses, played outside and generally behaved as a young boy. School bored her. Afternoon teas and theidea of running a house set her teeth on edge. Even though she obeyed her family's wishes and married an Episcopalian minister and had one child, she was never a conventional wife or mother, in any form, shape or fashion.As a diversion from her unhappy marriage, she found work as a horse wrangler in the fledgling movie industry. She worked as a stunt person in some of the films she provided horses for. She discovered flying and it became her life-long passion. She found love in the arms of many men, including her four subsequent husbands. She cussed like a sailor, drank whiskey with the best of them, and rubbed elbows with Hollywood elite. She could hold an audience captive with her storytelling acumen. She ran a dairy farm, a pig breeding business, a boisterous resort and maintained a stable full of fabulous horses. She spent three fortunes and died broke, but she lived life to the fullest and made the most of every moment.I read this book in one sitting and dare anyone who starts it to try and put it down.Pancho Barnes was one of a kind. What a dame! I wish I had known her.Enjoy!

Pancho was a very interesting personality, to say the least. I first read about her in Chuck Yeagers autobiography then later in Bob Hoovers Autobiography. Had to get more information on this accomplished though flamboyant person. She was definitely one of a kind and left her mark on the world of flying.
