I first discovered Abdurraqib's work via his twitter feed. I was thrilled to be able to purchase a volume of his essays to read in print, many of which predate my discovery of his work online. This book is FULL of essays and I really believe there is something for everyone in here. The breadth of Abdurraquib's tastes, interests, and insights is truly remarkable. The essays about my own personal favorites like Serena Williams and Carly Rae Jepsen still managed to surprise me, and I find myself nodding along to essays about artists I don't even listen to. To categorize this as a book of music criticism is both accurate and inadequate. Abdurraqib uses music as a vantage point through which to examine and interrogate the world he lives in, and I continue to be inspired by how deeply he feels both the music and that world. Anyone who reads this book is fortunate to have the chance to see the world through his eyes and to feel it through his words.

This is a book that everyone should read. I am a 70-year-old liberal white woman, and the things I should have known but didn't are sprinkled throughout this book. There's a lot of talk about rap and hip-hop in here, and I know little about it, but that doesn't matter. The essays about music speak to so many other things that are important that I couldn't put it down. I intend to give it as gifts to some people whom I feel need it the most.

This was one of my very favorite books of 2017, and it's the one that's stayed with me the most as I live, work, drive, and rest in Columbus, Ohio. The essays evoke and create this place while offering so much to readers outside of it: essays bringing together the personal and the critical (and showing us the ways in which they are the same) through locating music in place and memory.Also, I love this book as an object. The layout and cover are stunning--Two Dollar Radio makes gorgeous books. You will want to have and hold this one.

Great essays. The writer’s way of weaving autobiography into his music essays (on everyone from The Weeknd to My Chemical Romance) appeals to me greatly—isn’t that how we process music? through the lens of our own experience?—and the more strictly autobiographical essays are no less compelling. “My First Police Stop” is an especially poignant account of the first in a series of bogus police stops would make Abdurraqib feel. So there are searing meditations on being black in America, but this pleasingly restless collection aims to offer that and much more. Shout out to 2 Dollar Radio, the great small press who published this book and many other beautifully designed indie gems in recent years.

Raw and real. This book taught me about my privelege as a white woman, something I am always trying to be aware of. It was not written for me, but I still took away lessons from it.

I never thought I would read an essay about Carly Rae Jepsen that felt profound, but along came this book. Abdurraquib has a way of zooming out on pop music and pointing a critical eye toward its role in the zeitgeist. The cover is dope, the essays are personal, and I am desperately waiting for a crossover between Abdurraqib and Anthony Fantano so they can tell me exactly what to think about every album I listen to for the next 30 years of my life.

This is probably the only book I’ve bought this year that was the result of an intriguing cover image capturing my eye, an interesting description on the flap, and then a risk taken on an author I’d never heard of before. It turned out to be maybe my favorite read so far this year. Abdurraqib’s essays meander artfully between commentary on music, autobiography, and robust feminist commentary on race, gender, (drifting far from) religion, and the contemporary state of affairs in the USA. With great sincerity and skill, he dances between seemingly disparate topics, making profound and unexpectedly meaningful connections. Beautifully, compellingly, and refreshingly written. A joy to read.

How is it he can write essays about things I am not into that I cannot stop reading? The topic is not always up my alley, but the profound wisdom with which he examines the world around him is amazing. His writing makes essays about Carly Rae Jepsen transcendent. I never ever thought I would say that! He is a definitive voice I will follow for the rest of his writing career.

Enjoy thumbing through the book whenever I need a good laugh. Most of it is clever and funny. It is not a book that you would just sit down and read but it does have funny quotes that I can use when speaking.

This is a very good book of funny quotes by famous people and entertainers. I am sure some of them you will have already heard before, when you start reading this book. The book is very well organized by the joke tellers, e.g.-professional comedians, Hollywood actors and actresses, sports figures, kids jokes, knock knock jokes, children's jokes and jokes about foreigners. If you give it a chance it will have you in stitches.It is important before you read this book to check your ego at the door. If you can't do that, then, I would suggest you not buy this book. If you can leave your existing bias outside your reading room, you will be up late at night reading this until you can't keep your eyes open anymore. I am sure future reviewers of this book will reconfirm thisMy only criticism is that I had a friend who when I told her some of the jokes about foreigners, she was offended at some of the jokes. Some of her observations might hold some weight, but I think she should have tried to just appreciate the humor and not insert her own biases when I told her those jokes. I found some of the children's jokes at times a bit hard to understand, probably because I had a bit of a "jilted" childhood. The alphabetical index in the back was fun to use to browse, when you want to break away from the way the book's jokes are arranged in their order.There was one whole Prairie Home Companion Joke Show that sounded like they had used this book's jokes as its basis. Even if all you do is buy this book to tell a joke to your wife before you go to bed, it is worth the buy. It might not save your marriage, but you're both a lot more likely to remain friends during the divorce if you covertly use it on your spouse occasionally, just before, during and after the proceedings. So relax, cut lose and enjoy the read. It is a good one.Last point; If this book doesn't loosen you up as a person, go seek some professional mental help, and start taking seriously some of those observations your significant other has been telling you during the last few months.

But the funniest things ever said? Probably not, but enjoy anyway. I highlighted some of the musician jokes. For some reason British politicians are really funny. This is a good book to pick up and browse through, especially if you are having a bad day. You WILL laugh and, hopefully, feel better.

Is barely funny. It could have been more appropriately called, “Things Rich Old Men Say”. The best section is, “Kids Stuff@ in the back of the book.

Sent this to a friend who is being treated for cancer. Just what the doctor ordered. I told her I wanted to borrow the book after her treatments. My friend told me she laughed until she nearly fell off of the couch!

I'm not sure if this was a mistake or what...but I thought since I was buying a brand new book I would be getting the online access code with it as well. On the inside cover and on the inside of the back it talks all about the online stuff but there is no way to access it? This seems like a scam because now I have to buy the access code for a hundred dollars on the website. I may return this book because on the website I can get a discounted loose leaf version of the book...

This book was good, didn’t care for course though

This is the story of a totally amazing life of a young black boy living through the horrors of dysfunctional neighborhoods of violence and drug dealers with a major side trip at the age of 12 (at the request of his own mother) to Virginia's juvenile facility of last resort.How can anybody survive that sort of upbringing and survive in a civilized society? Ryan did just that and not only survived but became a famous principal performer in the Statsoper Wien in Austria and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.This is a totally unbelievable story, but it is non-fiction. It really happened. This is a book that I had to set aside on several occasions because I became too emotional to continue. This story is a complete verification of the old saw that 'truth is stranger than fiction.' I became aware of this story recently when I saw this young boy (now in his thirties) singing a major role at the Metropolitan Opera (I saw the live broadcast in HD). Ryan is a fantastic singer.I highly recommend this book whether you hate or if you love opera. The story is that of Ryan Speedo Green and is truly amazing.

This story is fantastic. This young man had so many struggles to achieve his goals and accomplished them with the help of many people and his fantastic voice. However, the writing was a little disconnected for me. I wanted to know how he overcame his horrible childhood and violent adolescence. Was music the healing element? Drugs? Needed to know more. Also, as a singer, I'm quite jealous of all the attention that his teachers, mentors, and the school gave him. His voice must have been quite unusual, but only once (that I recall) was his 2 1/2 octave range mentioned. I also needed a little more context of passage of time. He struggled with pronouncing languages, especially Italian, which is the real basis of opera, and yet then he was in Vienna singing to rave reviews. Inspiring story, nonetheless. I did enjoy reading about his life and triumphs. Bravo!

I am taking a trip to several locations in the Caribbean. Franko's makes cards for each of the places I was going to go, so I purchased one for each place. All of the cards are identical, except for the name of the place. It's hard to see that from the small images they put in Amazon.

The pictures might be useful for IDing all those fish if I could see them without a magnifying glass. The card is about 3.5" x 5", which makes each image the size of my little toenail. Good luck with reading the text at all!

Its very limited in term of the use for snorkeling. We went snorkel at the natural pool and only can idenified less than 6 fish on the chart. Its very disappointing. They should update this chart.

This is a great chart you can look up any fish that you saw snorkeling it is small enough to take with you when you dive in Aruba
