Maggie Callanan has specialized in the care of the dying since 1981. She lectures widely to lay and professional audiences on death and dying, bereavement, and hospice care. Maggie is also the author of Final Journeys. She lives on the New England coast.Patricia Kelley has worked in hospice care since 1978. She formerly held positions as Clinical Director of Montgomery Hospice in Maryland and as Director of Health Systems Leadership at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. She now works as a national and international consultant providing education and training on issues relating to hospice and palliative care. My mother was nearing the end of a nearly 7-year battle with advanced breast cancer, when I found this wonderful book. Thank God I'm a fast reader, as her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she became bedridden and practically non-communicative within two days of the book's arrival. Although her body seemed ready for death, something seemed to be holding her back, causing her to become agitated. Using the clues in the book, I realized that she was waiting for my father to say good bye and to tell her he'd be okay. Once I convinced him to do this, she passed peacefully about six hours later, surrounded by those she loved.

Recommended to me by a dear friend, Final Gifts was a book that helped her to understand what her father was going through during the final stages of his long battle with cancer. She said she found it to be comforting and helpful, and encouraged me to read it, even if it was in small snippets versus reading it thoroughly cover to cover.I ordered the book and the first pages I opened up to related to how someone who is dying might really know in their soul 'when' that is going to occur (Nearing Death Awareness) and in small ways prepare their loved ones. Individual's stories are brief, but well written and thought provoking. I found myself thinking back to what I'd read over and over again during the next few days.My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer over a year ago, and subsequently the doctors found she had a separate cancerous tumor (non-metastatic) on her pancreas. She has two aortic anyuersms and doctors really aren't sure why she is still with us, but continue to give her palliative care in the form of chemotherapy and pain meds to extend her life. At the same time, we try to prepare for her departure.As a caregiver this book is helping me to understand a bit more about what my mother is going through and remind me to be present in all my interactions with her, as even the mundane ones my be Final Gifts. I'm grateful my friend recommended this book to me and I would recommend it to others who are helping a friend or family member who is dying.

I am a nurse, appreciate the insights shared from this book & the individual stories shared. The grace and beauty the dying bestow on us amazes me. This book enlightens the process of dying for the ones actively doing it, the family-/loved one's dealing with the difficulty of losing their loved one, and for those of us caring for patients and families in the midst of death. We all know death is a vital life experience and this book helps us learn that we need not fear death or those dying. To me, this book gives a perspective of hope, understanding, respect and reverence for easing, comforting, assisting the dying and families who are sharing in the experience.

This is a must read for anyone with a loved one with an "impending death" disease (such as cancer). It not only helped me go through my mothers last days with grace and ease but changed my outlook on dying. I am no longer afraid of death. It sounds morbid but this book helped me enjoy the process of watching a loved one die because I did not feel helpless. It will enable you to be comfortable with the process of dying and embrace each step. It will allow you to comfort the person dying and the conversations that will evolve because of your awareness, are precious memories for you and very comforting to the dying person.

My mother has a gliablastoma. This book not only taught me a lot, but gave me some peace of mind. I feel better prepared and now almost feel a calmness about how the end will be. It was very difficult to read in that the stories were of the dying. I cried through almost every story, but it was important and it was healing in an odd way. I am the better for having read it. I can't thank the writer's enough for writing it.

I was given a copy of this book to read by the social worker at the hospice when my brother was dying. Words cannot express my gratitude to the author (and the social worker!) for sharing this wonderful book. It provided stories relevant to the communication of the dying patient. It comforts as well as informs. The biggest takeaway I got was that a dying person has a “to-do list” before they are ready to go. Examples of those who prefer to pass with family around, and those who prefer to pass on their own. I learned so much. I now own a spare copy for family/friends in the event they face this situation.

I originally purchased this book when my father passed away after a long illness, and it brought me comfort. I don't want to simplify it too much, but It is written by Hospice nurses and tells of their observations of different ways the dying communicate with their loved ones when the end is near. It may be that someone asks for their shoes (as my Dad did), shortly before they pass away - or many other incidences in their experience. I have purchased several additional copies as gifts since I got one for myself. Obviously, I recommend this book if you are looking for a comforting read.

We never want to have to read this kind of book, but it's a nice compilation of short stories written by authors who experienced the passing of many terminally ill patients. Sad moments that overall offer insight and relief in better understanding the dying process. While it's not a "what to expect" guide, it was comforting to see a thread of commonality, bringing an ease to the pain.

For Christmas, I ordered an mp3 player (Library of Classics) that was pre-loaded with 100 works of classic literature in an audio format. Each work is in the public domain and is read by amateurs, so the quality of the presentation is hit or miss.The Thirty Nine Steps is a suspense/mystery novel dealing with intrigue leading up to World War I. The British narrator receives a strange visitor who gives him sensitive information involving a possible assassination attempt on a Balkan dignitary. When the visitor is soon killed, the narrator realizes he is not only in trouble with the authorities (suspected of having murdered the victim), but even more so from the shadowy German organization who must silence him in order to proceed with their plans. The narrator leads the Germans on a merry chase, all the while trying to piece together their ultimate plan.This is not a bad piece of work, though it is relatively unremarkable. Very average in all respects.

Scotsman John Buchan’s fabulous The 39 Steps is rightly considered a seminal classic in the Adventure/Spy genre and it is for good reason it was on The Guardian’s Best 100 English Novels list at #42.This exciting tale of espionage defined the man-on-the-run tale in breathless fashion, and was the first of the author’s Richard Hannay tales. What remains remarkable is the contemporary prose. Though it takes place before the first World War, offering insight into the view of what was happening at that time, the tale is timeless, and with minor changes, could easily be a thrilling espionage adventure told in our day. Books need to be judged within their context, and while most do, some don't. At least on Amazon, it has a solid four-star average after hundreds of reviews, which I feel more accurately reflects how much fun this is to read.That's not to say some of what happens isn't implausible, almost Cornell Woolrich implausible, but with a style and pace which makes Robert Ludlum seem lethargic — no easy task — the reader is having so much fun they simply don’t care. Reading The 39 Steps is fun and exciting, which is what it is supposed to be. Watching Hannay escape time after time until the thrilling confrontation and conclusion is exhilarating.Buchan writes as though using lighting bolts rather than a pen, and we’re just along for the electric-charged ride. The 39 Steps is the quintessential can’t-put-down read. That thrill you got as a youngster reading a mystery adventure by flashlight beneath the covers was captured by Buchan and moved forward into adulthood, and on that level it doesn't just succeed, it shines. It's on The Guardian's list for good reason.The book differs from Hitchcock’s famous British film adaptation in that there is no love interest for Hannay here; frankly because it isn’t needed. A rollicking good old-fashioned tale that set a bar seldom reached since. Fabulous fun and quite enjoyable when read, if you don't try to compare it with modern-day spy novels.

As many other purchasers have complained, this is a terrible (or wonderful) example of what can go wrong with cheap, print-on-demand printing. The last pages of the book - right at the climax of the mystery - are out of order or missing. So the whole experience is ruined.Not the first time I have ordered a book from Amazon with similar P.O.D. errorsAmazon, which I understand Jeff Bezos started as a book publishing venture, should be ashamed of their lack of quality control.

This is a World War I era spy/adventure/mystery/thriller story written as part of the British government's propaganda efforts, in which most prominent British writers were enlisted. It's full of British "good old chaps" who instantly trust and aid each other despite wild tales and incongruities. The villains, of course, are German. Amazing coincidences abound to further the story. How the Germans got most of their knowledge and perpetrated their deeds remains unexplained when the book has ended. How did they locate Scudder to kill him? How did they track and then anticipate the movements of Hannay (yes, I know they had an aeroplane, but that's not saying enough). Most of the book is a bit of a travelogue with Hannay fleeing the Germans through Scotland (Buchan was a Scot) without really knowing who they are or what they are up to. Of course the British commoners thwart the seemingly invincible German intelligence agents. Perhaps innovative when it was written, but now best read as a period piece.

This is a classic spy story and was a best seller in its time and may be said to have made John Buchan's fortune. The story takes place in England and Scotland just before the start of World War I. Readers acquainted with the time and place will find the setting familiar, both geographically and socially. For the others, this is an excellent introduction and tutorial to the period, all in an amusing and easy to read slim book. The villains are of course the Germans, but even they are almost gentlemen and it's not their fault that they are not English.The protagonist is a James Bond of his time, but without the gadgets and no sex; it's all just a matter of brain and some brawn. A "colonial," the protagonist has a fairly low opinion of his home country, and even a lower one of foreigners, except of course the rural Scots. The boo is definitely not pc, and for those not offended by this, this book is a must. It is surprisingly compelling and the price is certainly right.

I was heartbroken when this book ended. Richard Hannay, where are you in our world? These are terrific adventure stories from a lost era. I was particularly grateful that Buchan doesn't bother to spend energy on scene-setting. The Great War... unleashed ancient hatreds... and bands of devilish men... who tried to do evil to our hero. Uh, ok! And we're off to the races.

Love what this author is doing to spread kindness and loved his book the Kindness Dairies but this book is not what I was anticipating. I gave three stars for effort and again because the message is good. Thought it was going to be like his other book and recap and go more in depth about his last “Kindness” adventure travels.

I never knew of Leon’s work before his Netflix series and this book. It’s just incredibly inspiring, as someone who has made 2 documentaries in Cambodia and New Delhi for amazing people/foundations, I’m more and more pulled into the kindness business, and this just inspires me more to follow my dream of documenting projects more and eventually setting up a social enterprise in Philippines one day! Fantastic!

Beautiful book, beautiful sentiment — what’s a nicer gift than a collection of adventure ideas that will make the recipients life better - and do some good in the world. We all need more of this in our lives. I’ve bought several to gift to friends, especially those stuck in a rut.
