Very beautiful photography in this large, very heavy book. I love how it spent a considerable portion on the Indigenous people of the Lake Tahoe area. Very informative.

Visiting the Nevada State Art Museum to see the exhibit I perused the book as well and decided to get a copy for my library, it is a wonderful collection of historical art of the era.

Lake Tahoe is truly one of the most breathtaking locations on the face of the earth. It is only natural that writers would attempt to convey some sense of that majesty between the covers of a book. This most recent coffee-table pictorial is no exception. This book is not your standard contemporary collection of photography but rather a chronicle of the history of the area as seen through the eyes of the artists who’ve tried to capture that beauty. There are plenty of photographic images to be sure, but they are mostly vintage views that help the reader get some sense of the Lake’s history.The paintings and woodcuts selected for this volume were well chosen and as good a collection as one is likely to find in any book on the subject. The obligatory examples of more contemporary art at the tail end are not nearly as impressive but fortunately don’t take up too many of the book's pages.I can’t really comment on the text in its entirety as I have yet to read the book from cover to cover. And as the text is a secondary consideration in pictorial books I am commenting on my first impressions after a cursory read. That being said, what I have read seems to be well informed and of benefit to the illustrations.This is a well produced volume and the images are all high definition. All the elements are there to offer any reader an enjoyable browsing experience. For someone living in the Tahoe region or who may have a vacation residence in the vicinity this would make an excellent addition to that stack on your coffee-table.My only criticism is the amount of space set aside for the region’s Indian basketry. Over a hundred pages of the book are devoted to this subject. The baskets Ms. Wolfe has chosen to highlight are no doubt exceptional but it doesn’t seem, at least in this reviewer's opinion, to dovetail well with the book’s principle theme. There is ample enough material here to have produced a separate book. And for those whose interest is the lake alone, they would probably have preferred it that way.I don’t want to knock off a full star for the above complaint but I think it should be noted none the less. Overall, I think this a book anyone with an interest in Tahoe would appreciate. And, if in addition to a love of Lake Tahoe you are passionate about Native American basketry you will have really hit the jackpot!

Although it is written in a prose format, this book immediately draws the reader into it's plot. As a matter of fact, the prose format is an advantage because it cuts out all of the unnecessary "fluff" and leaves just the "meat" of the story for the reader to enjoy. After 45 minutes of dedicated reading, I was disappointed to see this book end, and I highly recommend it! Definitely a must-read!

Got this book for our 9year old daughter, who loved reading it. She enjoyed the colorful picture the author paints of Cuba, while learning about how girls lived during that time period. Engle does a superb job weaving the thoughts and dreams of the three main characters into a thoughtful story of friendship. Would recommend to anyone!

In 1851, author and activist Fredrika Bremer spent three months in Cuba, traveling around the island with a young African-born slave who belonged to her hosts and who served as Bremer's translator. Drawing upon the nineteenth century writings and sketches of Fredrika Bremer, an early, important, and still relatively unknown figure in the women's rights movement, Margarita Engle has crafted THE FIREFLY LETTERS, a prose poetry dramatization of Bremer's time on the island.The story is told in alternating poems by Fredrika, her young translator Cecilia, by Cecilia's husband, and by Elena the fictional daughter of Bremer's hosts, a twelve year-old growing up in wealth and privilege who often seems to have even less freedom than the slaves owned by her father.It is when Fredrika leaves the confines of her host's home with Cecilia in tow (leaving young Elena stuck at home without companionship), and sets out across the island, that we come to grasp how the lively and rich culture that the slaves have brought with them contrasts so sharply with the strait-jacketed patriarchal society and customs from which Fredrika has escaped and to which Elena is a young, unwilling victim.THE FIREFLY LETTERS is a sterling example of how less can so often be more. Good prose poetry -- like all good poetry -- relies on strategic employment of the right words to paint pictures. As with so many great poetry novels, there is so much payoff here and relatively few words.I had not previously heard of Fredrika Bremer. I had no idea that Sweden and Denmark had enacted that legislation so far in advance of the U.S. I had no idea what Cuba was like 160 years ago. And, yet, in learning so much, I was able to read through this latest work by award-winner Margarita Engle in a very short amount of time, and then return to reread and savor a bunch of the poems I'd marked along the way.I'm not the biggest fan of Women's History Month. (I don't like the idea that one of the twelve months is for women, arguably leaving the other eleven for celebrating the brilliant guys who seem to have always gotten us into these messes.) But, being that it is March, it does make good sense to line up a copy of this book asap.

Before I even get to the book, let me just say, I love this cover. The artist behind it is Ana Juan Firefly Letters is written in free verse. Fredrika Bremer, was an author and she fought for the rights of women. In 1851 Bremer went to Cuba for three months. Engle read, Bremer's letters, diaries, notes and sketeches from that visit, The FireFly Letters is derived from that. ( I got all this lovely information from the historical note in the back of the book)The Swedish consulate places Fredrika with a rich family in Cuba. The family has slaves. Cecilia, a slave (around 15 yrs old), is Bremer's guide and translator. 12 yr old Elena, is the daughter of the house. The story is told through these three women. Engle has given Cecilia's husband Beni, a few poems of his own. I like them, especially the first one. Though I do think Beni's poem messed with the rhythm of the story a little.CeciliaThe huts of the freed slavesmake me think of my lost homeI remember a ghostly mistrising over the riverafter a boy drownedtrying to escapefrom the slave traders.The mist was silentbut the water sang softlytelling its ownflowing storyIf I had knownthat my father would trade mefor a stoloen cowI would have run awayinto the forestto live in a nestmade of dreamsand green leaves.Fredrika is against slavery and hates how women are treated in Cuba. Fredrika documented her trip in hopes of making people care about what was going on. With Cecilia as her guide Fredrika see much of Cuba. At night the two save fireflies, from the children who pull of their wings.Elena watches from her window. Its 1851, and its not proper for a young girl to do, basically anything. Elena can only do as she is told. She longs for a little independence.Engle's poems are beautiful. The voices of the three women fit together like music. The Firefly Letters was simply a pleasure to read.

This book, told in verse style, tells the story of Fredrika Bremer, a women's right pioneer. Fredrika travels to Cuba and realizes that slavery and women being controlled run rampant in Cuba. She begins to write about it and this book is based on her journals and letters. This book is told through Fredrika, her translator (who happens to be a slave) Cecilia, and a fictionalized rich girl whose family Fredrika is staying with named Elena. This book was a quick read. It was interesting to read about an area that I am not familiar with and about a person I did not know anything about. I enjoyed it.[...]

My husband and I purchased a young Gypsy Vanner colt a year ago. He was very pushy with food and didn't understand where his feet where going. We started with basic lunging and foot work but he didn't seem to understand. He just understood to move away from our pressure because it hurt. We started the program and quickly saw our horse change. This program wasn't about making the horse do uncomfortable activities. The steps where very effective and it allowed us to have an understanding of how an equine thinks. We made sure to do every step in order and 2 months later we can ride him! I feel so comfortable with him now that I would put a young inexperienced rider on him without a worry. Our horse never bucked during the process but his breed is known for being calm. If bucking had occurred, there was a section in the audio to address it. Overall, this is a fantastic way to learn if you would prefer to listen to audio rather then read a book!

Although I'm a seasoned rider, not much focus on horse training was ever given in my lessons over the years. I was in for a huge shock when I bought my first horse. That's when I first learned about natural horsemanship methods. I like Clinton Anderson and his methods, but find they can be pretty expensive to learn (clinics and kits) or not as retain able (if I happened to catch the show on TV). I'd never heard of Sean Patrick, but liked the reviews of this book and decided to go ahead and buy it.I am blown away by the amount of information and how sequential this method is. It's darn near dummy proof! I'm a very logical person, so getting to see exactly what I have to do without the flowery emotional words helps A LOT! I can't wait to try this on my horses. Someday, I'd like to break my own horse and try this method on a horse from the ground up. But, for now, this book is full of wonderful tools for any horse to learn!Update 7/14/14: I began my horse on the Countdown to Broke program three weeks ago and I am fascinated with the results so far! Yes, we completed all 500 inside turns and then some! My horse got softer and softer each time! It's absolutely daunting when you first read that in the book and you wonder how you'll ever get to that point with your horse. The trick is to complete them over the course of a few days. Start small, and as your horse becomes more attuned to your cue, he/she will get faster, softer, more sensitive, and more accurate at it! Make sure you continue to give your horse a break; I did 4-5 sets of 20 turns, with a break after each set, and my horse did very well with it.Update 1/12/15: I've still been working my horse and training according to this book. I re-read lessons before starting and study the book well at least 3-4 times per week. My horse and I are currently working on Lesson 23 and are on Day 31 of training. Although I don't have the time to work every exercise every day (and we'd probably be much further along by now if we had the time), I still take time out on the weekends with my horse to review a current lesson or begin teaching something new. Some things, like the head-down cue, I was able to continue teaching every time I haltered my horse to turn her out or bring her in. I've been keeping a training blog since day 1 on our successes and failures. I still love that this book gives you options and corrections if you're not succeeding. I've been telling all my friends about this book! Training a horse is not rocket science, and Mr. Patrick makes this clear to everyone. Of course, there will be some horses who need problems corrected by a trainer, but for the average horse owner with the average young or green horse, this book is a gem! I wish I could give it 100 stars!

THE GOODSean does a great job breaking down the early ground work, but there is absolutely nothing new from anything anyone else teaches.It really looks like a solid program for a prospective reining horse, but I wish they would state that in the description both in the ad and on the DVD cover. It's misleading otherwise.THE BADHe uses a horse that looks as if it's already been through his program, so there's no good illustration of how to handle any problems that may arise. I've been training for 40 years and have maybe had a small handful horses in all that time that don't have some issue at some point.Once he starts in-saddle work, it's geared for reining patterns and other similar disciplines. It's really not useful for other disciplines. For example, I'd never teach a train horse to back up rapidly on a verbal "whoa" command. I'd want it to stop. Not go backward. That could be a pretty bad thing on a technical trail. Work involving seat and rein aids are totally useless for anyone riding English.THE UGLYEach disc has a significant number of ads for land, equipment, whatever. I don't PAY for a DVD set to sit through ads. That really ticked me off.

This book gives a step-by-step guide for getting a horse ready to ride. There is a lot of information in this book. I don't recommend just anybody deciding to use just this book to train his first horse to ride. It takes a lot of horsemanship, training knowledge, and agility to do it safely. But for those who are experienced horsemen, this book can help keep them on track and help him not to miss steps. For those not ready to train a horse to ride, this book can give them information about what steps are involved and can give them an appreciation for the process.

After reading and watching other horse trainers from Parelli to John Lyon, I enjoyed Mr. Patrick's training the best. There was direct teaching in the video and you do not need to read a book with the dvd. Some of us learn best watching than reading and I believe he understands this. I love to read but seeing it done then going out and applying the lesson, you learn more, through your horse. Three of our horses understood immediately. This worked better for us than hands on training.

I have my first horse and this book gives us 30 some lessons (steps) for the Arena\round pen which is essential for a "green" horse, just starting out. I really love this book, the gear he suggests is practical and not expensive. There is so much I can do on my own here, then I can hire a trainer to check how the horse is learning, and correct any mistakes i'm making as I help him learn his way around humans!

This DVD helped me get started with my newly adopted mustang. I really like the way he recommends consistency and explains the situation from the horses position. He never gets overly emotional or dramatic and shows respect for the horse and ask for respect back. I appreciate a level-headed, focused approach. I highly recommend this video for anyone starting with horses or wanting a refresher.

This is THE ONLY translation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that you should read!This book is amazing and actually rights the translation wrongs done to Verne by early translators! In English, 20K is relegated to "Juvenile Fiction" while in France and the rest of the World, this book is still a best selling ADULT Science Fiction (or Scientific Novel as Verne called his work).This book and its annotations explain some of the subtle and genius details that Verne included but were mistranslated and misattributed as mistakes made not by the translator, but by poor Jules. For example... the Professor is said to have spent time in America's "Disagreeable Territory" which has been mis-interpreted as a vague non-specific location and evidence of Verne's supposed anti-American sentiment. However the location should have been translated as "Badlands of South Dakota", which would have reflected the Professor's (and Verne's) cutting edge knowledge of aquatic fossils. Another pathetic translation was when Ned Land is said to use a Lentil (a legume! a bean!?) to make fire! That makes no sense does it? Of course not - until the word is correctly translated as a "lens" - then it makes perfect sense that Ned Land would use a lens, to focus the sun's rays to make fire!Verne was a genius and he has suffered over 150 years of libelous misrepresentation due to lazy and criminally ignorant translation. Verne isn't the only victim to suffer - generations of English speaking Science Fiction fans and scientists have been denied access to the genius that is Verne. This translation is the first step in righting a wrong, the second step is you reading the book as it was mean to be read.Trust me, you'll thank me for the recommendation!The only thing that could make this book any better would be if the Nautilus submarine in the illustrations was the submarine designed by Harper Goff!

What a great book. Having used the 7th edition often, this was a pleasant update to the old edition with updated photos, easier navigation of pages, and overall just a fantastic resource that Im sure everyone involved with neurosurgery for years has been using. The book in my opinion just feels cleaner with a better layout and color coding scheme that helps once you have used it a few times to quickly navigate an otherwise complex load of information. Cant really speak to how great the book is as I am still new to the field, but has proven itself time and time again for me in the short time owning it to be a great companion for rounds, pimp questions, quickly refreshing prior to cases etc... In my opinion the 8th edition is worth every penny for the upgrade from the 7th, however I really wish that a PDF, eBook, or some other quick referencing computer source came with it as it would be amazing to navigate 1000+ pages using control+F (find) for one specific bit of information without having to waste time finding what I need in the index then to be referenced to a different section etc....

I'm reviewing the quality of print, not the book itself. It's absolutely terrible quality. The caption is misleading - this is a flimsy softcover book.The pictures look like they are clip art printed off of my ancient laser printer, complete with graininess, lines, and low saturation. The book is either formatted or trimmed wrong, with all of the text and pictures almost touching the top edge and a huge margin at the bottom. The cover looks like clip art that's been re-formatted. There's no publisher information, besides "Made in the USA, San Bernardino, CA / 28 November 2017" (which is the day after I ordered it, so it was obviously printed on demand.)
