I get it, structure thinking, MECE, problem solving, those are awesome tools for the modern business man. Thanks for that. It's the parts about having a secretary, how important it is to be organized so your wife don't find out you're cheating on her, the implication of having to be a man to succeed at McKinsey that I don't like.Having the book digital and in out Kindles maybe someone new at McKinsey would be able to update the book and bring it to the 21st century. Most of the content is great, but couldn't shake this feeling of reading something Don Draper wrote in the 60's the entire time.

This book's worth reading if you are a consultant or wish to become one. Don't expect the mystique and dark secrets of McKinsey to be revealed. The "way" is quite simple and obvious to experienced consultants; but probably what new consultants need to accelerate their technique. The style of the book is a little frivolous for my liking in places. It could do with a decent editor. Grammatical mistakes abound and some of the content could do with it's own medicine - MECE. Waffle and padding abound. In summary: it's worth reading, but take note that the author only spent 3 years at McKinsey and, based on an average engagement length of 6 months, that means about 6 engagements (assuming one engagement at a time). Is that enough to qualify as an authority on the Firm & its "way"? And then there's this constant reference to one consultant named McDermott - shouldn't he just have written the book himself?

Advice is very high level; not exactly a deep dive into McKinsey practices but more of an overview of problem solving and critical thinking as it relates to projects. I understand that the author was trying to make the content relatable to a wide audience, but it comes across as very generic.Reader beware: this book was written in 1999. Methodologies and tools have changed dramatically and I do not believe there has been any revisions/new editions.I would not recommend this book to experienced consultants, but if you are in college and considering consulting then this could be a great introductory text.

It's a decent book but it's clear that the writer is not one of the top partners and you can sense from it that you don't get too deep into the strategic part of McKinsey. It's interesting though as there are few books getting even close to this. Thanks

Outstanding perspective from some of the greatest Business minds. Read for my NBA program, re-read for myself. Highly recommended read!

This book is nothing special because it contains no revolutionary\evolutionary business concepts that are unique. To be sure, it contains lot of good business anecdotes you will find in most business books. But if you want to find out what makes McKinsey's business practice so special and so much better than its competitors, the book leaves a lot wanting. Furthermore, the book is full of generalities, for example, the chapter on interviewing for facts was nice, but again, nothing special. You would be far better off buying specialty books on such matters. I think this would be a good book to buy if you want to enter into consulting or are looking to work for McKinsey. For others, however, the book does not break any new ground nor provides any brainstromy insights. Rather, it is full of nice business generalities and suggestions.

It's a quick read and may learn something. If you have been a consultant, nothing new for you here

As you probably know if you're reading this, if you search for anything "McKinsey" or "consulting" this book is often at the top of your search results, and as you also probably know if you've been looking for a good book on McKinsey, nothing else promises what this provocative title does. I read the reviews and I thought I knew what to expect. Many people said the book was filled with generalities and wasn't useful to anyone with graduate or real world business experience. I took that into consideration but being a 2nd year undergrad I thought I should find at least a few enlightening ideas. Some people even recommend it as useful for the "16-21" crowd, but I would charge even for the average achiever in college the book falls short of expectations and is not worth owning. I'd recommend skimming a borrowed copy though, just to satisfy your temptation for a glimpse at the "McKinsey Way".

When I was learning to play jazz guitar I struggled for years to figure out how to play at really fast tempos until I learned the secret of memorizing 3 and 4 note 'motives' that I had so well memorized that I could play them with out thinking. Think of this book as 5334 chess 'motives'. These are the 'guitar licks' of chess. Play them over and over and over until you don't even have to think when you see them. They become automatic. Then when your clock is ticking you won't miss that 3 move checkmate that you only had 60 seconds to find. It does no good at all to build up a winning position if you cannot finish off your opponent quickly and efficiently. There are plenty of sites on the internet where you can practice tactics. They will NOT do what this book does, which is systematically train your eyes to recognize the patterns of trapping and killing an opponent's King. The ONLY problem with this book is it is BIG and the diagrams are rather small... But, hey! That is because it is a treasure trove. One hour a day every day with this book and your chess 'eyes' will improve without fail. After working on this book for weeks the one unexpected takeaway is that the beauty of these puzzles eventually turns working on tactics from a drudgery into something inspiring and fascinating. I never quite appreciated the aesthetics of chess as much as I do now after being shocked and awed by the beauty of something as seemingly simple as a mate in two.

I bought kindle version. I read it through kindle cloud reader in web browser, ipad and iphone. It is quite good. The format is one puzzle per page. The image can be magnified to whole page and easy to read. The answers of puzzle are located on appendix. There is a link in each puzzle in which link to the answer. There is also a link in answer page to go back to original puzzle page. It is convenience to check answer. The mate in 1 puzzles are easy but mate in 2 or 3 are more difficult. It is a good training to my calculation skill.

Beginner or expert, this remarkable book of exercises can help you learn chess tactics--the bread and butter of successful play. I own this book in hard copy--a massive boat anchor--and as soon as I found it in Kindle format. The convenience is incredible--the print form sits on my shelf of chess books, unused, but this is getting full use.Do understand that it's a perfect book for the beginner, since the "mate in 1" problems will help the novice to understand both simple and quite sophisticated piece moves. Learn the piece moves, and immediately begin to see and solve fundamental chess problems...a fun and practical way for the beginner to learn the essentials of piece placement, critical squares, and the full range of tactical moves for success. The more difficult problems will challenge club, expert, and even master-level players, so you can benefit from this book at whatever level you achieve. At $3, this is indispensible.

Great book. It will keep any chess player occupied for a long time. The problems start from mate in one with endgame scenarios up to mate in three. The combinations section afterward is very good as well. I must warn once you get pass the introduction there is nothing but problems no words or annotations just at the top of the page it will say white or black mate in (scenario 1-3). I'm new to chess but fell in love with the game I got the book for Christmas this year and I'm already of problem 1102 (I tried my own version of the 7 circles chess program I had off work for about a week and a half for the holidays and just tackled the problems) My friend who is rated around 1900 says this is a good book to have. I looked up the Polgar sisters and see why they are as good as they are having this training as early as 5 years old and sticking with it is genius in its selfirst. I'm enjoying this book a lot.

Fantastic. My advice is to get the 'hard cover', as people are complaining about the lack of readability of the Kindle and the paperback. The hard cover is easy to use and will last a life time. SPEND THE MONEY. This book improved my game, in as little time as a few days. My child will go from the children's books 'Chess Camp', to this Polgar book.

Sharpen your chess and general concentration skills with this massive collection of chess problems.I thought I would fly through this rather quickly but years away from the chess board have taken their toll. This is a great resource for me to get back in the saddle.

The claim by so many chess writers that "the best way to improve your game is by playing" is sheer nonsense. I played a lot and lost continually in early high school without improving one bit. This is because I didn't know what the difference was between a good move and a bad one. Also, I had no idea why my oponents made the moves they did. Playing didn't make me better; it just made me give up the game until now. I'm 61 and have just discovered how to improve my game and thereby actually enjoy playing chess. The biggest improvement came after I began studying Polgar's "Chess: 5334 Problems..." The first thing Polgar taugh me was how to look at the entire board. I'm still working through this book and it contiues to be a help to me.The second book that has improved my play is Chernev's "Logical Chess, Move by Move." It has helped me to discover the answer to the question, Why did my oponent do that? Now that I've learned what chess is all about -- beyond just moving pieces -- I can finally say that, yes, playing improves my game. But I would suggest, before playing yourself into frustration like I did, buy and study these two helpful books.

The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans, by Patricia Klindienst

From Publishers Weekly

Though Klindienst imposes a strong philosophical structure on the narratives in this poetic collection, her political interpretations come second to the beauty and humor in what is essentially a set of portraits of both American gardens and gardeners. Woven into these stories are wide-ranging details of agricultural history: how to make blue corn piki bread, how the injustice of post-emancipation land sales affected one farmer, the fragrance of the sweet-sticky-pumpkin flower brought by refugees from Cambodia. Klindienst's writing shines when recounting her conversations with farmers, but her analysis of "hunger for community" and how a "garden can be a powerful expression of resistance" feels awkward. Luckily, between the prologue and the epilogue, Klindienst provides an unpretentious and touching tour of the increasingly rare corners of the country where land is worked by friendly locals who know the differences between five types of basil and can jaw for hours about plants, soil and the weather: "Oh golly let me see. It would be the bush beans," says one woman when asked about the type of seed she's been saving the longest (70 years, in this case). This book's broad scope touches on the best of nature writing, singing the rhythm of growth in both plants and people.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Klindienst celebrates gardens created by immigrants who resisted the intense pressure to assimilate into mainstream American society, in a lyrical account of her three-year journey to collect the stories of ethnic Americans for whom gardening is tantamount to cultural endurance. Survivors of the Pol Pot regime fled the killing fields of Cambodia for the healing fields of New England, while the Yankee inheritor of land wrested generations ago from Native Americans during the infamous Pequot Massacre of 1637 atones for that atrocity through the simple act of sharing seeds of corn with the tribe's descendants. Klindienst profiles 15 valiant and thoughtful gardeners intent on preserving their native birthright and on restoring and protecting their adopted land, individuals and families evincing a stewardship that not only resists cultural absorption but also sustains an ecological imperative. A look at how culture and food intersect. This book is a great for explaining how the connection between food & history & culture come together as a whole. I would highly suggest reading this if you love food culture.

Fantastic read if you like gardening and culture and food!

I love this book. It is a great resource with exceptional understanding of the topics as discussed . Used as a compliment to other reading materials.

People have been talking about food justice for years. They're also been talking about local food. From a completely different angle, this book happens to unite the two [way back in 2006]. Food justice doesn't just compliment local food in a practical way; food is culture. Everyone in the US came here at some point in history, and brought some form of culture with them [even the Native Americans, although we don't know what their culture was like before they were native]. And these cultures all still give meaning and purpose to the lives of these people today. Often times, the only way left for them to preserve their heritage–after the loss of their land, their language, their clothing, their communities–is by growing and eating the food of their ancestors. And our author Klindienst doesn't sidestep the brutality and violence with which "immigrants" or "foreigners" [many of whom have lived here for generations] are perpetually oppressed. This book is both beautiful and eye-opening, even for someone who's been thinking a lot about food, cultivation, culture, and privilege for some time now.

Last summer I received this book as a surprise gift from my son's partner. Its author is a like an aunt to her, and she thought I might enjoy it. I was very touched by this generous gesture and certainly hoped to like it; its vivid cover looked inviting and the topic intriguing, but my expectations were modest at best. Dutifully I delved into it - lo and behold, I didn't just like it. I loved it. The writing is lyrical, the stories are powerful. Its narratives, chronicling the experience of people bringing forth food from the earth, put this book squarely on the shelf with Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle and Pollon's Omnivore's Dilemma.English lacks a word for people who grow their own food while working a day job: hence the book's dissertation-length title, The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic Americans. "Gardener" connotes flowers more than edibles; "farmer" and "grower" suggest fulltime professionals, and "subsistence farmer" conjures up hardscrabble sharecropping. Our closest term is kitchen or cottage gardeners. The author highlights eight gardens, each created and nurtured by people whose pleasure in growing things and deep reverence for the earth are powerfully and poetically expressed - especially captivating since few of them would be comfortable writing their observations and experiences. The reader feels privileged to sit in on the dialogue between author and subject - lush descriptions jump off each page, allowing us to see, smell, taste, and feel the bounty of these gardens. Each day's sequence of harvesting, preparing, preserving, and eating, along with endless garden tasks, including saving the best seeds for the next year's planting, come to life.Klindienst skillfully recreates the narratives of these gardeners speaking their truths and sharing their intimate knowledge of producing sustenance; their garden labors sustain them spiritually as well as physically. Most of them are immigrants who bridge their old homes and their new by connecting with the earth. Meet the Khmer growers of Western Massachusetts, aging immigrant survivors of genocide. Over time they have created a flourishing New England community garden featuring South Asian fruits and vegetables. In their garden these two sisters are at home, at peace. From early spring to late fall they are busy every minute nurturing both their plants and the younger family and community members who help out; their organic produce is in great demand by local fans and restaurants. When the harvest season ends, the garden's proceeds fund wat restorations and schools in their home village in Cambodia as well as new local Massachusetts Buddhist communities. When winter settles in their aches, traumas, and flashbacks reappear. Cooped up indoors all winter, they long for their garden, a surrogate for their past lives, only feeling hopeful again when spring revives their spirits.Visit with Klindienst in Ruhan Kainth's Punjabi garden in Fullerton, California. Had she stayed in her comfortable home in India, Ruhan would have enjoyed the many privileges of high economic status, but she would not have been free to garden - in her home culture, such work is considered beneath her. She learned about the wonder of growing things by collecting tenant farmers' rent for her physician father who worked abroad. In California she can, and does, grow everything she wants. Her South Asian American friends find it all very puzzling. Why would she want to get dirty? A visit to her recreated semi-tropical garden answers that question - she has her own private paradise, a quarter acre with over 50 fruits, vegetables, and herbs, including the centerpiece, a neem tree, one of only a few in North America. I gave a copy of this book to my South Asian friend Meenal, a newbie gardener, and recommended this particular chapter. When her parents recently went back for a visit to their native India, they asked Meenal what she might like them to bring back. Her answer: "Seeds!" So Ruhan already has already raised up a disciple. Perhaps one day Ruhan and Meenal will even trade their best seeds along with their stories, who knows? The last of its eight chapters chronicles the wondrous story of Whit Davis, an 11th generation Connecticut farmer who has recently presented revered Indian white flint corn to the descendants of the Native Americans displaced by his colonial ancestors. Along with the seed corn, he sends the following instructions via the author, who is doing the actual presentation: "Tell them they should plant two, three fields of it and to keep them separated. After three, four years, they should take the best seed from all three and mix them together and start again. That way they keep the corn strong. Tell them that I wish them well. Tell them that I wish them good luck in all their endeavors." I gave a copy of this book is my nephew Neil, a PhD in eco-biology, now a plant biologist developing drought resistant corn, and directed him to Whit's story. Neil was astounded to read Whit's instructions, because they describe precisely the methodology he and his team utilize in their experimental fields. We live in a time of keen interest in food politics and increasing ecological concern. One of the books strengths is its subtlety in these matters. The stories tell themselves, but they also enhance the reader's awareness of the need to support local farmers, preserve open space, and protect seed banks from corporate, monopolistic control. This book is suffused with deep and ancient wisdom. It is more than just an oral history book; it is a sacred text, helping us to relearn deep reverence and spiritual connection.Considering how drawn in I was by Klindienst's work, it came as no surprise to me when I learned that she has won a 2007 American Book Award for The Earth Knows My Name. This prize highlights writing which expresses America's multicultural heritage. Just one suggestion: read the prologue after reading the main body of the book, at which point you will have fallen in love with all her subjects, and realize what an artful volume Patricia Klindienst has created. By then, reading her own story will make more sense. Another reading tip: there is a coherent order to the chapters, but each stands on its own, so no need to read them in sequence.Warning: this book is powerful. Don't be surprised if, come spring, you find yourself planting a cottage garden....

In the early 1970's Studs Terkel traveled across the country interviewing people about their work, and eventually compiled the interviews into the book Working. In the early 2000's, Patricia Klindienst took a similar approach, traveling around the USA to interview ethnic gardeners, immigrants who maintain their cultural identity through their connection to the earth. While The Earth Knows My Name will never be a musical, it is a marvellous testament to the importance of earth and water, seed and plant, and in sustaining not just our ethnic roots, but also our whole selves. Her words bring to life the feeling of warm sun on your back while you plant corn, or crisp autumn mornings harvesting beans. She lets you smell the scent of flowers, but also taste the flavor of language, in her profiles of 15 gardeners. This book is well written, it is poignant, and it is gently honest, with the author's love of gardening, and sincere respect for her subjects masking the inevitable political undercurrents. My only complaint is that there should have been more pictures - I craved a coffee-table presentation, with Klindienst's words matched to lush photographs. But maybe the mind's eye is the better viewing choice. Buy the book, and decide for yourself. Better yet, buy the book, and plant a garden.

Review

“The best book of the year so far.”—Entertainment Weekly“Disturbing and riveting. . . . Grann has proved himself a master of spinning delicious, many-layered mysteries that also happen to be true. . . . It will sear your soul.”—Dave Eggers, New York Times Book Review“A marvel of detective-like research and narrative verve.”—Financial Times“A shocking whodunit. . . . What more could fans of true-crime thrillers ask?”—USA Today“A master of the detective form. . . . Killers is something rather deep and not easily forgotten.”—Wall St. Journal“David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon is unsurprisingly extraordinary." —Time“A masterful work of literary journalism crafted with the urgency of a mystery. . . . Contained within Grann's mesmerizing storytelling lies something more than a brisk, satisfying read. Killers of the Flower Moon offers up the Osage killings as emblematic of America's relationship with its indigenous peoples and the 'culture of killing' that has forever marred that tie.” —The Boston Globe“[C]lose to impeccable. It's confident, fluid in its dynamics, light on its feet. . . . The crime story it tells is appalling, and stocked with authentic heroes and villains. It will make you cringe at man's inhumanity to man.”—The New York TimesNew York Times bestseller (April 2018)

Well researched and written. Sadly a true story. A testimonial to greed and arrogance. Well worth reading.

Author David Grann spent years doing research and uncovering new evidence in writing Killers of the Flower Moon. Since I was a fan of his from reading The Lost City of Z, I expected this latest book to be the sort of non-fiction I love: the kind that reads like the best fiction. I was not disappointed. What I did not expect was just how infuriated I would become by reading it.Having been a huge horse racing fan when I was a teenager, I knew about the wealth of the Osage Nation in the 1920s. One of the Osage owned a winner of the Kentucky Derby. But that knowledge was just cursory. I had no idea how rich the Osage really were, and I certainly didn't have a clue that the government didn't trust them with all that money. I should not have been so naive. It had to madden many whites that, although they'd shoved the Osage onto a piece of land they deemed unfit for themselves, oil would be discovered and the Osage would turn out to be the wealthiest people in the world. The one way they had of trying to horn in on this wealth was by declaring that the Osage were not fit to use their own money wisely. In many cases whites were put in charge of the families' money, and they gave their wards allowances (and themselves large fees for their business knowledge). Why on earth should I be so surprised that this greed would escalate to murder? It is the natural progression after all. To this day, the Osage have trust issues, and who can blame them? They tried to get dozens of murders investigated, but instead the killings were covered up. What Grann did in Killers of the Flower Moon was to dig deeper and deeper and expose just how huge the problem actually was. As I read, words like horrifying, unspeakable, and several others flashed through my mind. This is an uncomfortable read for anyone with a conscience; nevertheless, it is a fascinating and important one.(Review copy courtesy of NetGalley)

This is one of the best true crime historical accounts I've ever read. From start to finish it is compelling reading that didn't let me put the book down. A darkly fascinating subject well rendered.

This is one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying books I have ever read. I hope that it becomes a staple of reading lists for American history classes. It is an incredibly well told story of a staggering real world evil in an America only two or three generations removed from our own. You should read it. It won't take long - it is, though it feels crass to say so, a genuine page-turner. And I at least will likely wrestle with it for a long while. Man o man.

Since the 17th century, the Osage tribe claimed land from Missouri west to the Rockies. With the Louisiana Purchase, the tribe was forced to cede land to accommodate the flood of western expansion. In Chronicle One of Grann's book, the history of the tribe is laid out. By the 1870's, what remained of the Osage tribe settled in NE Oklahoma because their chief deemed the land too hilly for white settlers to want to file claims there. The tribe negotiated with the Department of the Interior that any reservation land used for oil drilling or mining, had to be leased from the tribe and that the full blooded Osage would share in any profits from these natural resources. Logs where kept of Osage tribe members and indeed, when oil gushed from leased reservation land, head rights were claimed. The Osage tribe were among the wealthiest people in the country. Starting in 1921, Osage tribal members began to die. Some were shot in the head while others suffered from a mysterious "wasting" disease. Many suspected murder and lived in fear of who might be next.Chronicle Two describes in detail the role of the Bureau of Investigation (the early FBI) to unravel the murders during what became known as "the Reign of Terror." The Bureau was formed under Teddy Roosevelt in 1909. By 1924, J. Edger Hoover became head of the Bureau. He wanted to highlight the expertise of the Bureau by solving the Osage murders. He hired a former Texas Ranger, Tom White, to lead the investigation. The reader discovers clues along with White as he methodically collects evidence and interrogates witnesses and suspects . This is the most exciting part of the book. Many, but not all of the culprits are brought to justice. How are the Osage doing now? This is the gist of Chronicle Three and it is, unfortunately, the weakest part of the story. Grann checks in with the descendants of some of the murdered Osage. Their sense of unease and lack of justice is palpable. The oil has dried up and the tribal population has diminished. Some press Grann to help them bring closure to the holes in their family histories. But the ancestors are in their graves along with the murderers and the paper trail is weak or inconclusive. As Grann runs out of answers, this reader ran out of interest. It is a compelling and important story up to this point. Now that wind turbines dot the prairie of the Osage reservation, their future seems as bleak as their past and the lack of justice seems as limited as their future. Despite Grann's extensive notes and lists of resources, the reader is left, like the Osage themselves, with more questions than answers.

I loved Grann's The Lost City of Z so I was eager to try this. Unfortunately, it was drab in its telling. I’m glad I’ve finished it, though. It’s a fascinating & important story, that shows the appalling extent of exploitation that Native Americans endured. The first three quarters of the book are spent in minute details. That was interesting, but too long. That case had little to do with the birth of the FBI, other than it was one of their first (if not the first) investigation and coincided with the rise to power of J Edgar Hoover. The final quarter rushes through the implications and unsolved mysteries of the murders, then the book abruptly ends.In short, far too much detail about one case, then not enough detail about what it all meant and the larger picture. Not terrible, but unlike The Lost City of Z, not great.Larry Nocellaauthor of Razor Wire Karma: a novel, available on Amazon

Scribbling the Cat is a strange and unsettling book. Like Fuller's two other Rhodesian memoirs, Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight and Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, it's hauntingly evocative and elegantly written. Once more, I was effortlessly transported to Southern Africa, "a land of almost breath-taking beauty or of savage poverty; a land of screaming ghosts or of sun-flung possibilities; a land of inviting warmth or of desperate drought" (143). But unlike the other two Rhodesian memoirs, Scribbling the Cat is elusive and dark and ultimately it loses its momentum. Fuller's charming sense of humor and endearing optimism are largely absent here, replaced, instead, by meandering reflections and a sense of foreboding that is never truly resolved. When reading fiction, I normally try very hard to separate my feelings about the author from my attitudes about the book. With memoir, however, that's a little bit harder to do, because the author is selling not just her story, but also herself, to some extent - her values, impressions and presuppositions. And while I had started to develop a sort of benign "girl crush" on Fuller after reading her two other memoirs, this one left me questioning her character a little bit, and the book as a whole.Instead of focusing on her childhood and family life growing up in Rhodesia, this memoir centers on Fuller's friendship and travels with a man whom she calls "K," an ex-soldier who fought on the losing side of the Rhodesian war. She meets "K" while visiting her parents' fish and banana farm in Zambia, and despite her father's warnings to steer clear of him, Fuller, who seems to be suffering from a kind of spiritual malaise, quickly develops a kindred connection with the man as they travel together alone, often in very intimate settings, through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. "K" is very much reminiscent of Stanley Kowalski , a volatile, choleric soul trapped in a shell of hyper masculinity. It's clear throughout the memoir that Fuller finds herself both repulsed by and strangely attracted to "K", which is problematic, since she is married with two children. Throughout the book, Fuller, who is so transparent in her other memoirs, remains silent on the appropriateness of this arrangement.Fuller probably wouldn't have been able to write this book had "K" not developed romantic feelings for her shortly after their first meeting. And more than a few readers, myself probably included, seem to think that Fuller exploits "K's" feelings order to get the goods---that is, the material she needs to write a compelling story. She's also on a kind of spiritual journey herself, and she thinks that if she can just figure out "K", then she might be able to make sense of her family's own involvement in the war. She expresses her desire to "label ["K"] and write him into coherence," and, by extension, herself. But "K" is a complex person, a professing "born again" Christian who is tormented by the ghosts of his past and driven by an unpredictable brew of sincere faith, erratic superstition, debilitating guilt and blind rage. By the end of both her literal and metaphorical journeys, we know very little about "K," and very little about Fuller and only a little bit more about Africa. Her goal - "to patch together enough words to make sense of [their] lives" (239) - is never realized, and only two major insights are communicated: that war indiscriminately breaks people's bodies and souls and that Fuller indiscriminately breaks men's hearts. The first insight I already suspected before reading this book and the second one I was sad to discover.

I read Ms. Fuller's first book strictly by accident. I thought Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight would have been a political view of the struggle in Rhodesia between the white settlers and the indigenous people. It wasn't, however, and while at first I was disappointed as I kept reading I found a brilliantly told tale of a family that lived in Rhodesia that is very similar to many families I know all over America.Scribbling the Cat is another Fuller memoir set in Africa, and this one is even more personal. The first book tells the story of the Fuller family, and as the mother is the focus of the family the story is truly a mother daughter tale. This book is a story about who Alexandra Fuller became, not how she grew up, and I love it.Just as in the first book, this is a story that is distinctly rooted in Africa, but if you change some of the names and some of the locations, it truly has played out in America as well. Fuller meets a former Rhodesian soldier, warrior more like it, and is awestruck by his lifestyle. He is now a gentleman farmer living in an area that doesn't have many white gentleman farmers, especially ones who in the past were killing their African gentleman farmer counterparts.Fuller does a great job of bringing the reader along on the journey. Her writing style reminds me in a way of Hemingway. Hemingway had a way of making me feel the heat in Key Largo, feeling the strength of the fish in Old Man. Fuller really made me feel the mud on the trail to the farm, the smell of the fruit bearing trees she passes, the heat from the African sun, and most important I felt the affection that the old soldier began to feel for Ms. Fuller, and the confusion Ms. Fuller felt for him.All in all a great book by a great writer. Alexandra Fuller is one of the truly great writers alive today and while she lives in America her heart still resides in the Africa of her childhood. She seems keenly aware of the problems the white Rhodesians inflicted upon their native residents. I definitely feel her sense of, I hate to say it because it is far more complex, but guilt for what happened to the Africans subject to white Rhodesian rule. Her escort, the former Rhodesian soldier, was part of the problem, a very bloody part of the problem, and she truly struggles to get past the things he did. She doesn't make him a villain, but she doesn't deify him either. I can also feel that she would take issue with my use of African in that last paragraph. When I say Rhodesian I am thinking of them as white European settlers. In Ms. Fuller's case, however, she is just as African as any black African subject to Rhodesian rule. Reading between the lines Ms. Fuller is in many ways a victim of the same colonialism many black Africans suffered from. She was white, but hardly wealthy.Throughout this journey I truly had a sense that I am seeing Africa through the eyes of an African, something that Ms. Fuller can't shake, because it is who she is. One great thing I got from this book was fair notice that my simple categorization of the problem, this is white, this is black, this is African, this is European, the European whites were oppressive, the Africans are the victims, speaks to my ignorance of the reality many people are living in these former colonial areas that can't be categorized. Good people had to do bad things to become free, good people did bad things to serve a belief they later realized was wrong.

A brutal story beautifully written. If it were not for the superb use of words, this would have been an unpalatable read. There were times when I felt the author was indulging in voyeurism and exploding the fragility of the soldier. But this is a story that needs to be told. Wars produce no winners and here we read of the tragedy of those who lose.K may appear as a bizarre character, but, having experienced the Mozambique civil war first hand as a hostage of Renamo, K was chillingly real. The scary fact is there are thousands of damaged humans - the debris from past and current civil wars - trying to make sense of their lives. In a strange cathartic way, reading this story helped.

Alexandra Fuller is one of those authors who, for me, can't write enough. After reading every book of hers, I feel like I've lived through intense emotional struggles and awakenings with doses of laughter on the side. She is a gifted writer who is so in tune with her interactions with others, and then she shares the experiences with incredible insight and graceful eloquence. This book is a little different from her childhood/adolescent/family books, however it has the same vivid descriptions of Africa and the same, sometimes shocking, truth about human nature. I really enjoyed it.

I've read many of the stories that originated in the Rhodesian Bush War including the "The Selous Scouts" writtten by their original CO Col Ron Daly- Lewis, which was earth Shattering, as far as I was concerned but this tale by Alexandra Fuller was written on such a human level that it gave a totally different angle to a similar war story but with so much humour and empathy. Totally worth reading if historically true stories are your forte

What a unique reading experience! Love the format of letters and emails written to family members combined with self-reflection of a very personal nature. Lonnie is a storyteller and this 'story' about his two-year stint in Uganda with the Peace Corps is filled with humor and self-effacing honesty. I have to admit that I know Lonnie and his family and friends, so does that make the book more pleasureful? I doubt it. Anyone would enjoy this open-kimono glimpse of a couple, their desire to serve and help others, and the trials and sweet bits of Ugandan life. I was surprised though at the what seemed like a fairly large percentage of time not directly engaged with the 'peoples.' A lot of down time. Not surprised by the return to America and re-assilmilation issues. We do have TOO much of most everything here. This abundance is glaring upon return. Wish there had been a bit more in the book about the Peace Corps itself and his reflections about the importance (or not) of this organization. Lonnie and Kathy are generous 'giving' people and I have no doubt that they will be at it again-somehow- in their futures-if only their kids will stop having kids...

This is a remarkable book. The kind you start reading and don't ever want to stop. Disappointed when you reach the end.(Is there a sequel?)This is funny and heartwarming.I highly recommend this book!!!

Lonnie is able to convey poignant details about events that are unbelievable, humdrum and sublime from the point of view of an American living in Uganda. While my term with Peace Corps Uganda 2016 was abbreviated, I found myself easily transported back to my time together with Lonnie and Kathy. Great job, my friend!

What a wonderful, enlightening, and funny book. I smiled or chuckled on most pages. This book is consistently good throughout and littered with visions of Africa. I really enjoyed getting to know Lonnie's family..that was special. I just hope Kathy is still not hoarding and hiding the chocolate.

Loved this look into PCV Lonnie's slightly skewed mind. A fun read that had me laughing out loud and wishing that I had taken that chance with an adventure in the Peace Corps. Written with honesty and humor that awoke memories of my own travels and trials with third world taxi drivers and towns without electricity, but full of great people, interesting food and creepy crawlies. Thanks for sharing your adventures and thoughts with your readers. Highly recommended.

I'm a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer so I'm perhaps a little biased. I enjoyed this book very much and I think it captured the PC experience superbly. I plan on reading it again.

Lonnie Hughes is my teaching partner at MGMS; he is an all around great guy. I've heard him tell a lot of these stories from time to time but it was great hearing them in order and in "real" time via letters and emails as they are presented in the book. Lonnie is fond of sweets like chocolate and pop tarts and I found myself trying to figure out how to send a care package back in time. His great personality and care for others comes through the pages along with the fact that Lonnie is a great teacher who will go around the world to help someone. Shalom, Mi Amigo!

An amazing book filled with funny and touching stories about a man who left everything (and everyone) behind to serve in the peace corps. A book you can't put down! Would recommend to anyone!
