"Kafka on the Shore" was my introduction to Haruki Murakami. It was wonderful and I was forever connected. It was years ago now. Loved so many of his books over the years. And now It's time to give thanks for "Hard-Boiled-Wonderland At The End Of The World."I'm 76. I've worked for almost forty years with dying folks and those experiencing catastrophic loss. These last few years my fairly constant companion, death, has come intimately into my own life. Dear ones, close, have died. And I too have little deaths often, as my body, and worse, my mind loses this, that, and sometimes the other thing. So I began the book examining my own grief and mulling through the past, balancing, opening, letting go.As I read, each chapter seemed to keep pace with my moment, sometimes leading, sometimes following. I spend so much of my time speaking to balance and rhythm as it relates to lifecycles. And here I was in a gentle dance with the words, the specifics of story and memory, and a sense, somehow, of healing. As with all of his books, I hated for the words to end. But this time, I felt not a sense of loss as I read the last line, but a feeling of peace.I would like to thank Haruki Murakami for all his books, but would especially like for him to know how powerfully "Hard-Boiled-Wonderland At The End Of The World" interacted and affected my moment.Thank You.Bill Schaeferwww.sena.orgwww.quicksilvertimes.blogspot.com

I have read of Murakami's books 1Q84, Wind Up Bird Chronicles, Kafka at the Shore and now End of the World. I had begun to suspect Murakami is a genius after the first, but thought, "too much fun and wonderful to be great literature". The others convinced me that this is an author who listens to no voice other than his own, and is creating a body of works our children will read in college. This book is truly out there -- our hero wanders into a scene that is as absurd and silly as a comic book, and some of the wacky science is a little too much. But it's all just the vehicle for expressing a truly thoughtful and unexpected view of ones consciousness, and what has meaning, or even perhaps what -is- meaning. It has been a while since I read Sartre, Kafka, Camus and others but it recall thinking each had a surreal vision of daily reality -- characters were just foils for their ideas. This is similar in some ways.Murakami, so far has impressed me with his ability to bring wit, humor, immediacy and his own personality and loves into his writing. This makes it approachable, fun, and a little less self-important than these other great authors. This book is not one I would recommend if you're interested in starting with Murakami -- Kafka at the Shore or 1Q84 both fit that bill well. But if you are a fan, and properly prepared for the bizarre, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is a stunning and beautiful work of literature.

This is a first rate science fiction novel. Surprisingly, Murakami provides a better hard science backdrop to his story than the recently much touted “Interstellar.” What’s more, its theme was highly original. But the science was so deep it got a little confusing. So to help out (maybe) I’ll give you my take. The human mind is what we call a state machine. It’s composed of switches that can be on or off. The “state” referred to is the on-off condition of the whole switching “ensemble” at a given time. The machine moves from state to state (through the available “state space”) as time progresses. The human mind is a near-infinite state space machine. That is, there are enormous numbers of switching configurations it can demonstrate. The basic premise is that you can use the instantaneous state of the brain to create an encryption code to secure data. As the brain state is far larger than any existing public encryption key, you can create an unbreakable code key. The problem is that the brain state keeps changing. So you have to store the state at the instant of encryption. To do that, you must create a separate mind that you can rope off, preserve and go back to when you want to decrypt your data. Somehow, the kindly old scientist called “grandfather” found out how to do this with a real brain. This, of course, was of enormous interest to governments and to other nefarious agencies. The problem was that all but one of the subjects “grandfather” treated died. The one survivor remained by creating a third brain state that was, in fact, another world to which its creator could escape. This “world” would last forever and its inhabitants would be immortal. Longevity was not in their existing for all time in the physical universe. But rather, the nearly infinite capacity of the human brain could segment each instant in to smaller and smaller “sub-instants” effectively making a finite interval of time last forever. It’s “kind of like Zeno’s paradox” grandfather observes. This, by itself is interesting, but Murakami, as far as I know, is not a scientist. He is, like grandfather, largely self-taught in the field. And he has no real interest in the science he spins. His real interest is to explore the making and mechanism of the human mind. He engages in this exploration to achieve an understanding of what a “character” is in literature – how a character can represent a mind, a mental state. Given this, it is really amazing how coherent the technical issues of the book come out.So, was the book worth the read? If you’re expecting a novel like The Wind-up Bird Chronicles” or “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki,” forget it. This is not it. This is an exploration of mind and literature. It’s also, like I said, a science fiction book. The writing, of course, is spectacular and mood evoking. But the characters themselves lack the engaging quality and real-world anchors of some of Murakami’s previously drawn figures. But part of Murakami’s great talent is that he can work in many genres and weave some really weird “stuff” into his stories while still maintaining credibility as an author. I think this is an important book, as it exposes what one of the great novelists of our time thinks about his art. But it’s certainly unlike the main body of his literary work.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (Kindle Edition) by Haruki MurakamiI suppose it all just depends on your view, doesn't it? Which is what this book all about. Our hero is really an amazing person. He is imbued with a gift, and then that gift is made into a weapon (of sorts). but how much of his humanity did he sacrifice along the way?First published in 1985, it holds up quite well now. The horrific journeys taken seem like suicide. Or do they? Lots of humor, and lots of Western references too! This is nt just a very serious look into the consciousness of our hero, but also an examination of choices made, and to be made.

To Live or to Perish Forever: Two Tumultuous Years in Pakistan, by Nicholas Schmidle

From Publishers Weekly

Journalist Schmidle offers a gripping, grim account of his two years as a journalism fellow in Pakistan, where his travels took him into the most isolated and unfriendly provinces, and into the thick of interests and beliefs that impede that nation's peace and progress. The author reports on the murky relationship between the Pakistani intelligence agencies and the Taliban and how American bombings have actually helped the Taliban gain influence in the border regions. While Schmidle amplifies the danger an unstable Pakistan poses to its neighbors and the world, he also turns a constructively critical eye back to American support of mujahideen during the Afghan war against the Soviets and shows how American intervention was both a help and an exacerbation of problems between Pakistan and Afghanistan. As a witness to Musharraf's last days in power and the rage that followed Bhutto's assassination, Schmidle has, with this effort, established himself as a fresh, eloquent and informed contributor to the ongoing dialogue regarding Pakistan, terrorism and the strategic importance of engaging Central Asia in efforts toward peace and stability. From Booklist

In 2006, wanting to become a journalist but lacking any journalistic experience, Schmidle decided he would go to Iran, but political upheaval there nixed that plan, so he chose Pakistan instead. After hurriedly gathering background, he spent two years in the country, exploring its past and present, living among its people, writing about them. The book is a fascinating account of his years in Pakistan, where on any given day he could be spending time in a Taliban training camp, interviewing a Shi’a preacher, or meeting a political leader. Schmidle explores the country’s short but turbulent history (Pakistan, both the word and the country, is less than a century old), showing it to us from the perspective of someone who came to the country ill-prepared for what he would find. He eventually learns to love the country and its people, but the memory of Daniel Pearl, an American journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan, is never too far from Schmidle’s mind, or from the reader’s. This is really the story of the two Pakistans the author discovered: one beautiful and friendly, the other frightening and deadly. --David Pitt

Schmidle is a brave journalist who got his start on a two-year, all-expenses-paid fellowship in Pakistan. He made the most of it, traveling to remote regions of the country and hanging out with some of the country's notorious opposition leaders. He used to make regular visits to Lal Masjid (the Red Mosque), just down the street from his house in Islamabad, to hang out with its leader. But then, in the summer of 2007, it became international news when then-dictator Musharraf decided he'd had enough opposition from Lal Masjid, where they were preaching against the government and stocking up arms.Schmidle gained access to people in Pakistan that few foreign journalists have, and in To Live or to Perish Forever, he uses it to give a fascinating look into the stories behind the bombings and conflicts that get reported in the western press. One quibble about the reporting, however, is that he mainly seems to hang out with the leaders, and doesn't talk to average people as much. If he did talk to average people much, it's not clear it influenced his ideas.Toward the end of the book, it might seem a bit disappointing when he writes: "I thought back to the question my grandfather had put to me more than a year earlier, when he asked, genuinely curious, 'What's wrong with that place?' I realized that I was no closer to offering a comprehensive answer now than I had been back then. That bothered me. The political, social, economic, and religious dynamics embedded in Pakistan seemed to become more and more complicated--and volatile--with time, and less and less solvable."But I've lived in Pakistan nearly two years now, and although I haven't spent time with the kind of people that Schmidle has, I have the same feeling as he does. There's no clear answer about where things are headed, or what to do about it. When I've gone back to the U.S., people want to know what I think about Pakistan, what should be done. But it's really hard to say much.Perhaps the best answer is simply to curb corruption, to help make development faster, and much more fair. That's not the kind of answer people are looking for, though, because it's a solution that would take decades, and no one can see the benefits on the horizon, it seems.I also think Schmidle is on the right track when he writes: "I disagreed with those who said that ethnic tension, the Taliban, economic crises, years of military dictatorship, the lack of a cohesive identity and so on would eventually lead to Pakistan's breakup. That would almost be too linear and neat: creation, extended crisis, and then dissolution. It seemed more likely that Pakistan would continue to exist in a perpetual state of frenzied dysfunction; alive, but always appearing to be on the verge of perishing."I wish he'd backed this up a bit more, since statements like this can seem like little more than personal bias. Some people see looming collapse everywhere--not just in Pakistan--whereas others see things stumbling along indefinitely. I do think he's right, though, to argue against Pakistan's collapse. People talk about that a lot--to the point where it made headlines when the President said the government is not going to collapse. What President would say that it would?I don't think it will collapse because things are still developing. In the western press, all you hear about is things being blown up. But new buildings are going up. Pakistanis place a high value on education, and even the very poor still pay to send as many of their kids to school as they can. It's true that not everyone in the country identifies as Pakistani first--they might have more allegiance to their sect of Islam, or to their tribe. But there's still a fair amount of people from the tribal areas who think of themselves as Pakistani first. No one seems to know what to do about the rampant corruption, but most do recognize it a big barrier blocking improvement here--and recognizing that is a crucial first step.Average Pakistanis still have hope for the future, and that's the most basic reason I can see why the country isn't going to collapse any time soon.

Detailed account of a complicated topic. I wished for a more continuous narrative, but I felt like it was a series of accounts of multiple splinter groups. It has been a slow read for me.

This is a really good book if you are interested in broadening your knowledge of Pakistan; it is one of the best books out there, if you don't know much about the country. Nicholas Schmidle did a superb job, and I strongly recommend this book. However keep in mind that the author did not go to Pakistan as a historian, nor on in-debt political research assignment; for this reason the book presents a journalistic view of how the situation is on the ground, not the history behind it. If you are interested in why Pakistan is the way it is, or want a better analysis of where it might be heading, I would strongly recommend "The Duel: Pakistan on the flight path of American Power" by Tariq Ali.The book is an easy read, in chronological order (for the most part), and even though it is non-fiction, it holds the feel of an interesting novel. Schmidle did start the book by describing how authorities showed up at his residence with a deportation order. Someone here, in the reviews, implied that the author did this to point out his own importance, but I don't think that is the case. I think he just wanted to start the book with a hook to get the reader's attention; Schmidle is actually very humble. If I was in a foreign country, I learned the language, wore local dress, followed local customs, interacted with some very dangerous individuals, and was bothered by authorities, I would do a lot more self-promoting in my book.I don't think the author has "Gone Native" but he does hold some views that most people in the West, and a number of people in Pakistan, generally don't hold. For example, he gives the extremists responsible for the "Red Mosque" incident far more credit; that is my opinion anyway.Overall the reader does get the feeling that Nicholas Schmidle genuinely cares about the people of Pakistan, and holds deep respect for the country. It seems like he did his best to gain a better understanding of the situation on the ground. It is unfortunate that he could not be able to do his work in Pakistan for longer period.

If you are a Muppets fan, regardless of how old you are and wondered about the background of the characters then this is a must book to have. The book has almost 200 pages and I was somewhat surprised that there are over 150 characters. There is a brief bio for each of the characters.

Although published in conjunction with the new movie, this has Muppets going all the way back to "Sam & Friends". While all the characters that ever appeared in the various TV shows and movies may not be here, most of them are and get one to two pages each. There are additional sidebar features showing things like Fozzy's favorite jokes and Gonzo's most outrageous stunts, and a comprehensive index in back that lists every mention of every character's name throughout the book. This one is a must for all Muppet fans, regardless of age.

I sat down after retrieving it from the mail box. I started laughing, and laughing more and more as I turned each page. The person who wrote the words is simply a genius. I didn't know Waldorf had a wife!!! What a beauty!!!! All of the best characters are featured. Frankly, keep this book on the coffee table and pick it up every now and then to just get your chuckle for the day.

This was a gift for my brother who is a HUGE muppet fan. This book has great color pictures and short bios of every muppet character with interesting and humorous notes about each one. I flipped through it and found a lot of interesting characters I had never seen before (i'm not quite as dedicated in my Muppet following). He said it was a very good book and I think he read it cover to cover.

I bought this for my son who is a "know everything about the Muppets fan". If there was something about a character he didn't know, this certainly shows it. The book is great, color pictures for each character and states if they are related to any other muppet characters, where they first appeared and what shows they appeared in. There is a page for each character and it tells a little bit about them.

This is a great little book about Muppets. It's very informative and covers most characters. It's the quality you expect from DK, with lots of graphics and lots of information. This is a great buy for any Muppets fan.

This was a gift for my dad. We all used to watch The Muppet Show together when we were kids. There will soon be a permanent Muppet exhibit at the Museum of Moving Images in NYC, which I am looking forward to. And the show is coming back this fall! I read the book and enjoyed it, and my dad loved it, too. :D

My little muppet fan LOVES to look at this book! It has every muppet you can think of on glossy full color pages. He can look at it for hours, and he can't even read yet. My husband and I had a great time looking at it too! It's engaging and it's a great value for the money! I recommend it for muppet fans of any age!

I am a long term Grisham fan and like many of my favorite other writers he has produced works I thoroughly enjoyed and some that were marginal. This is one of his better ones. Some of the characters are stereotypical but in general the story moves along, is entertaining and interesting. Not as dark as some of his others but certainly more believable. Worth the time and $.

Early on in Grisham's career, he wrote with fire. He went off against the ills of the legal and political systems, kicked greed between the legs, and did it all with some memorable, believable characters. His success was not surprising. Then, he stumbled. He lost the fire. I barely hung on through books like "The Brethren" and "The Broker." But last year's "The Confession" showed him kindling some new heat over a subject he is passionate about, and I applauded it, even if it was a bit stale at times."The Litigators" is the first Grisham book I've had fun reading in a long time. I get the feeling he had fun writing this one. We meet grouchy Oscar Finley and plucky, unethical Wally Figg, partners at Finley & Figg. These are some humorous, annoying, even likable guys scraping to make a living through any client and situation possible. They're propped up a the tough secretary. They're bottom feeders. Along comes David Zinc, who can no longer stomach the hundred-hour work weeks at a legal firm where 600 other lawyers are employed. He goes off the rails, decides to check out one fine morning, and ends up drunk hours later on the steps at the ignoble Finley & Figg. Despite his recent bender, he's actually a guy who loves his wife, albeit not always well, and still retains some ethical and legal standards, since he's not yet stepped foot into a court or heard the way things go down between a rascally attorney and a leering judge. With Finley & Figg adding Zinc to their recipe, the mixture bubbles over. Figg stumbles into a potentially huge torts lawsuit against a pharmaceutical manufacturer (while scraping for clients at a funeral home, no less), and he starts signing up other clients (ones who are alive, thank goodness). In his enthusiasm, he drags along Zinc and senior partner Finley, eventually landing their tiny firm in court against a formidable armada of attorneys. As I whipped through the pages, I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion--and for all the right reasons this time. Grisham gives us some great characters, three-dimensional, likable, understandable, despicable, and everything in between. This is the Grisham I remember, one who was passionate, even fiery, but who also loved people and never forgot they were the driving force in his stories. Something has shifted. That fire is back. And this is easily my favorite Grisham in years.

I purchased this book in Kindle format and had a great deal of fun with both the story and the quirky characters. I don't think I've ever read another author who can present and track a more fascinating set of characters. The law details can get a bit long and dry at times, but they support the premise well and never get in the way of the strong characterizations. We have a young lawyer who hates his suffocating job and the mega-firm that employs him to the point of "snapping" in the elevator one morning and giving it all up to join (accidentally) a ramshackle ambulance-chasing firm that he stumbles upon consisting of two quarreling attorneys, their streetwise secretary, and a "firm dog" named AC. I found the four of them, and the various other people who make up this busy adventure, just plain good old fashioned fun. I recommend this book as a pleasant diversion. Glad I bought it.

I noticed there were some single star reviews, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would give this story a low rating. Different strokes, I guess. For me, this was a great read. Maybe because I know what it's like to dread going to a job I hate, I completely understand walking away from something that pays well but literally makes you feel sick. So when David Zinc walked away from his big-time paycheck and grinding 80 hour work week, I couldn't help but think yeah! As far as the other characters in the book go, I liked them. Yes, they were a bit quirky, but that's what made them fun.As a writer, I envisioned Grisham sitting there, pounding on the keyboard, maybe laughing at some of the craziness he was inventing and enjoying every minute of it. The enjoyment shines through on every page. The story has a good, even pace - you never get bogged down waiting for what comes next because the progression moves smoothly. There's a lot here: a bit of tongue in cheek humor, the legal wrangling we all expect from Grisham, done in true Grisham style (which I happen to love), some pathos, some suspense and a resolution that is satisfying and gratifying. It's a good ride and I didn't want to put it down until I knew how it would all come out. It didn't disappoint.

I work in a law firm and have been employed in law firms for more than 30 years. I have only recently gotten into John Grisham's books because I had thought they were mass market. I could not put the book down, especially toward the last half. What a wonderful ending. Plus my granddaughter who was recently accepted into Howard University on a full scholarship, and wants to pursue a law degree after her undergraduate studies, says she's been reading Grisham since the fifth grade. LOL!

This was the 1st Grisham book I've read since The Rainmaker. The Litigators is a quick and easy read with the pages turning fast and faster. This isn't great literature but light and quick reading. I liked the characters and the plot was good, albeit predictable. I had guessed the outcome 1/3 of the way through the book but that's ok, it was still fun. I read it in less than a week and it kept me entertained. I would recommend it for light reading

I know I have very good intelligence and a lifetime of success, but I also know I have something akin to dyslexia when it comes to mastering computer skills. It is of almost zero help for me to have a guru sit down at my computer, give me a quick explanation, and the let his/her fingers fly over the keys and, Voila! See--I have been taught! Not so. I require someone who is an expert, who also has fabulous verbal skill, has a great deal of patience, and allows me to stumble and make mistakes until my brain and body connect and I have developed a new skill. Sadly, very few talented people can discipline themselves to teach this way. If I can find an excellent book of explanations, especially if there are many clear screen shots in color so I can absorb what happens with each keystroke, I CAN learn. Dummy books often supply this kind of teaching/learning. However, I didn't get much help from several Dummy books, but did have success with this book. I have a very specific way in which I can learn computer technology and books like this are helping me to master a smart phone, in this case, an Android. I don't specifically require large print, but with books in a large print format, the information on a single page is often just enough for me to absorb as a comfortable step in mastering this skill. I am definitely not dyslexic, but very shortly after I tried to learn how to use my first computer, I adopted the screen name "Computer Dyslexic." If the shoe fits...... I wish I could give books like this ten stars.Nancy, 71 and still learning.

When I needed help with my new Galaxy phone, I couldn't find a book that would just explain the very basic features and how to use them. I had never even used a touch screen before. This guide was the first one that I found that was short and to the point. I was up and running with my new phone very quickly. I'm still using the book for troubleshooting when I run into trouble.

Help Me! Guide to Android for Seniors by Charles Hughes, March 2015, can be a useful help to Seniors learning to use for the fist timean Android cell phone.Positive aspects : it is for beginners and starts from scratch, only 54 pages in large print easy on the eyes, goes right to the procedure required without spending time on philosophy, text is not crowded and leaves plenty of space on the page. Here are the main subdivisions : 1. Introduction to Android pages 5-11 2.Making calls pages 12-16 3. Managing contacts pages 17-214. Text Messaging pages 22-29 5.Managing Pictures and Videos pages 30-33 6.Using the web browser pages 34-37 7. Managing Emails pages 38-41 8.Managing Applications pages 42-47 9. Tips and tricks pages 48-53 10. Troubleshooting pages 54-58Unwelcome aspects : completely in black and white text, even for the icons; icons are small and tend to be blurred like a bad photocopy, very generic as it covers all cell phones using the Android system. No special sections for the various brands like LG,Samsung, and others.

Not recommended at all!!! Very few pictures, print is too small. The few pictures that are included are black and white. Not useful at all for seniors. I bought it for my 80 year old father and he said he did not like it at all, quickly lost interest. A guide for seniors needs to have larger print, has to be very simple to follow with plenty of color photos. Remember most seniors do not have much experience with technology and computers. Guide has to be more visual. You are better off buying one of those guides by BDM that appear at the newsstand every few months which have plenty of color photos.

Bought this book for a friend to give to her elderly parents. She said that they said it was very comprehensive and easy for them to understand. She said she definitely recommends this for others.

my Mail Lady way surprise when I gave her the book. I told her now we can both learn how to use the smart phones and tablets. I gave the other copy to my boyfriend of 20 years. He wants to purchase a smart phone, but because he is in his 70's he's scared. Now we can learn together how to use these new phones. Thanks again.

I purchased this book for My elderly Mom, it's a really good book, has Large print and is easy to understand, I actually have read through it and found out a few things I didn't know about Android phones, It will be helpful to many people,as it's easier to understand Then most instructions that come with the phone's.

It is a very good beginner's book and it is very difficult to cover all the various versions used on each device but they do a pretty good job. I teach and help seniors get familiar with their devices and I have recommended that a couple of people purchase this book for additional help.

I was excited about this book when I read the synopsis pre-publication. However, the novel was quite a disappointment. Although the historical depiction of British prehistory was interesting, the plot line was not. The author seems to have it out for men. Rather than a trip back into the Stone Age, the book is pretty much of a rant against abusive men, which, as it turns out, is about every man in the book. I wouldn't waste time reading this.

A stunning book, beginning to end, truly an ageless allegory about people straining to find authority in the mistreatment of history and of their loved ones. Also a class-infused story of privilege posing as superiority, of education parading as wisdom. Beautifully rendered. The re-enactment of history as a virtuous parade of cruelty.

I was enthusiastic about ordering and reading this book. It sounded exciting and seemed to have all the elements of a good anthropological thriller. But the hype (incl an NPR interview with the author that got my initial interest) was better than the disappointing plot. Although another review here pointed out the gratuitous male-trashing throughout this story (with which I agree), MY prime objection is that the plot promised so much sacrificial debauchery in its preface, then failed to deliver much more than a petulant nature romp through the British bogs. It was as if the author - a creative writing professor no less - was afraid to allow her first-person protagonist to be seen as threatened or suffering. This novel could have been so much better (and longer and darker) but she seemed to be hiding behind her academics and not releasing her true creative potential.

Ghost Wall is a spare, elegantly written book, with disturbing themes. It build to a climax that I knew was coming, even though I hoped it wouldn't. The end is sudden, and leaves me wanting to know what happens next. There are some scenes that could be triggering for some people. Overall, a good story. I'm definitely going to look for other works by this author.

Amazing read — spare and tight and chilling — how far will a father go to pursue his vision? The book was incredible and very well done. Loved the historical bits and found the protagonist authentic and the plot compelling. A harrowing indictment of the patriarchal family structure.

Good book if you have only an afternoon and want to be taken by the hand and dragged through an exciting adventure.Very well-written, although the absence of quotation marks makes it necessary to pay attention to who is likely to be speaking.

Just wow. I can smell the bog. See the faces. The warmth of the sun in the early morning. The smell of fire and the salt air along the shore.

A surprising and compelling tale, full of archeology and the proof of man's inhumanity to man. I couldn't stop reading.

After the unfortunate and scarring ending to book one we find Clem on the trail of pirates.....were-pirates?A string of attacks in the sky promts the Red cape society to work along with the Shadow watch to figure out and stop this aether menace.Clem spends a lot more time in the scottish highlands than in London and we are introduced to some new characters and some old! Come on the loch ness how cool is that! We also get to see a little more of Clems past or maybe hints as to what she comes from.New changes come to the Red Cape society in this installment. Quinn her partner is retired after getting brutally hurt the last book leaving our fearsome duo one short. On top of that there is a new leader to the society and rather handsome leader to boot. As Clem chases after our sky high menace she is also assigned a new partner and is learning what it is to be in charge of someone else. I really like Clem, she is bold and loyal and no matter what gets thrown at her she always adapts and charges forward. I like seeing characters from other series make an appearance and loved it in this book! I do have to say i was craving a ginger chew after this book, but not for the reason that Clem needed them. I enjoy this series so much because I can visualize the setting and scenes as if i was there and I love love looove the clockwork aspects!Cannot tell you enough how much I love this series I just need them to be longer. It goes far too quickly for my liking!

Melanie Karsak writes great steampunk books--her stories are interesting and well-written. Interesting characters, fast paced adventures that are full of action are the hallmarks of her books. Clemeny Louvel is a heroine for the future. I can't wait to see how her story unfolds and where it takes "Little Red." I recommend Ms. Karsak's books.

Clemeny “Little Red” Louvel is my new favorite heroine! I read the third in the series first, and was hooked! Each story stands alone beautifully, but you can’t read just one, they’re that great! I look forward to more, and am now headed to purchase more titles by this very talented author. Highly recommend diving in, it’s worth it!

Melanie Karzai has a way of writing steampunk that keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your proverbial seat. The mechanics aren't so out there that you have to guess what they do but they are still above what they had for the times. Love this series.

Agent Clemeny is hunting Vikings. flying ones. and they are hunting treasure, especially the English kind. Clemeny has some amazing luck and help from some very surprising sources to help control this hair-raising problem

The story was 5 stars but it was only 144 pages wbich is a short story but we paid book price. I love agent Lovel and the story line was great!

You had me at Vikings, Melanie! I’m a huge fan of Vikings, so when I realized that Melanie wrote Vikings into her steampunk Red Riding Hood series, I knew I would be smitten. And I was right! This clever tale has everything: action and adventure, preternaturals, a hint of romance, and gobs of steampunk!Though Clemeny is a badass character, I love that she’s not flawless. With motion sickness, finding and capturing the shape-shifting Vikings isn’t easy. But that makes me love her more.If you’re a fan and dedicated reader of Melanie Karsak, I promise this book will delight you! And if you’re new to Melanie or to her Steampunk Fairy Tale series, I know you will enjoy this book as well. But go read Wolves and Daggers first.

Another AMAZING story from this wonderful author. She is a one click must for me. With the perfect mixture of action, adventure, steampunk, preternatural and of coarse Vikings; this story is a hit!I love Clemeny and how she is both bold and strong, but also flawed and feminine. the premise of this story is so unique and different that it makes the adventure of reading it a completely new experience. It is loosely based on the tale of Red Riding Hood but it is filled with shape shifting Vikings, and a kick but female. I loved every word! A must read! I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review. Oh, and it can be read as a stand alone, but the experience of this story is heightened with having read Wolves and Daggers first. It is an amazing story as well so there is not real hardship in that! Enjoy.
